ChenowethArts
Most of the time when I am working in the studio it is just me. And, most of the time, the radio is the second thing that gets turned on after the light switch. What (if any) do you have playing while you work? Music? Radio? TV News? iPod Playlist? Or, do you prefer to work in the relative silence of your own thoughts? Is other stuff too distracting? For me, it is a local radio station that plays a respectable rotation of oldies (i.e. 60's music)...'guess that tells on me a bit. How about you? -Paul
emptynester
There is almost always music at the studio I belong to. What is on depends on who gets there first and sets up the music. I like classical in general, but will listen to anything but rap or heavy metal. Other members have a nice jazz play list. Some times I just sneakily decrease the volume of what ever is playing to make it more comfortable for my ears.
bciskepottery
Classical music on radio (unless its Saturday afternoon when the Fat Lady sings; then its an Oldies Rock station) or my Ipod (predominantly folk, bluegrass, country). Pugaboo
I prefer the quiet. My studio is a TV free zone. I have a stereo but never hooked it up after the move. It's my sanctuary. My creative thoughts are so loud in my head it's like I'm speaking out loud... Oh wait maybe I am. Is talking to yourself while you work a danger sign? Maybe I should claim I am speaking to the dogs... They'll never say else wise. Terry
Mark C.
I have speakers in studio and kiln area with separate volume controls-hooked to a in the house two 300 stack cd players-it goes on before heading to studio always. No tunes no work.I do spend a few hours a week with no tunes but its not a usual thing. Mark
Benzine
I have a stereo in my studio, but I rarely use it. Instead, I'll use my iPad to stream Pandora Radio. That thing is awesome. You can shuffle artists, and it plays similar artists, to those you select. I've discovered some new artists and songs this way. I do have a TV in my studio. It was left by the previous owner, who used the space as his wood shop. I do occasionally have it on, depending on what I'm doing, and what's on. If the show demands a lot of attention, I don't bother trying to keep up.

Marcia Selsor
Quiet. I can hear a bird call I don''t recognize and will get up to go find the source. I have seen Monk parrots and Love birds, Oriels, Cardinals doing this. Marcia
Min
I have to have some noise when I'm working. I'm a news junkie so I usually start the day with what's going on in the stock market on BNN (Business News Network in Canada) then the local, Canadian and world news then I put songza on the ipad and run through a few of their playlists, pop, rock, classical, anything but country which makes my ears bleed. TJR
I have a CD player with a stack of music. Usually some hurtin' music like Robert Cray or Lucinda Williams. I also listen to CBC radio one. My other ghetto blaster above this is tuned to CBC radio two. Good music after 2:00 pm. I also have an ipod that I have loaded with tunes. You probably have all heard the big scandal with the host of "Q", on radio one. He apparently likes to hit women. He claimed it was consensual. CBC fired him last week. He had a great show which I listened to at 10:00 a.m.We are all in shock that he had this hidden sexual predilection. TJR.

Celia UK
BBC Radio 4 - a wide variety of spoken-word programmes including news, current affairs, drama, comedy, science and history. All radios in the house and car are tuned to this - keeps me up to date on major news items without having to read the newspaper. I find when I look at a piece of my work at a later date, or replicate a process, the memory of the programme playing at the time comes back. Anyone else experience this phenomenon or is it only me? ayjay
The hum of the wheel, rain on the roof, branches scratching the window - that's both enough and too much noise for me.
Pres
Ok, so I admit it, I play a TV in the studio while throwing. Keeps me company. Not always, maybe 40% of the time. I do it while wedging, while throwing off the hump, or while trimming. I play old movies, or shows that I have seen most of, and sometimes will stop in the most important scenes to watch. This is just as company, not to entertain me. Little old 12" tube set, going for 6 yrs, when it goes, I don't know.
Karen B
No radio unless it is a baseball game. The commercials drive me crazy. I listen to a book on cd or on my ipod. I listen to music only when I'm glazing as I need to concentrate. I can't have silence, don't want to listen to the noise in my head.
Crusty
we listen to the Blues on a cable tv station.. we don't turn it up really loud so we can hear the wheel's and talk to each other while working... No commercials , all Blues ...
TJR
CBC does not have commercials, although there have been big cuts of late, I don't watch T.V. in the studio. I am currently working my way through "The Walking Dead on Netflicks." It's like watching a train wreck. I wouldn't be able to do any work while watching it. Too scary! I watch it in my house when the studio work is done. TJR.
GEP
Weekday mornings start with The Tony Kornheiser Show on the radio, which is supposed to be a sports talk radio show but is really about Mr. Tony's interests and his life as a neurotic celebrity. It is really smart and funny and puts me in a good mood every day. (http://www.espn980.com/shows/the_tony_kornheiser_show.php) After that, I will listen to a variety of talk radio stations (the sports station, the news station, NPR) or I will watch/listen to the Food Network on the iPad. On Saturdays, I like the whole line up of NPR shows, will keep that on all day: Car Talk, Wait Wait, This American Life, Splendid Table ... Denice
Like Chris during the week I turn the TV on some old movie that I don't have to look up at it keeps me from hearing all the strange noises around the house. The weekends my husband is working in his shop next to mine so we turn our radios to the same station and blast old time rock and roll. Callie Beller Diesel
I like to listen to our provincial independent radio station CKUA. They're on the internet, and very worth checking out. They play just about everything. I can't even describe it, here's a link. http://www.ckua.com I too, do a little netflix time on the iPad while I'm doing finishing work, like handles and lids. Started working my way through Farscape, because I am also a huge scifi-fantasy nerd.
Joy pots
I like listening to books on the Ipod sitting in a Bose speaker system while throwing & when I glaze I turn up the boom box to loud oldies music as my glaze area is in the other room. oldlady
i am at the very farthest edge of reception of the classical radio station from DC. all the radios are tuned to it and it is very finicky so i am careful never to change the station. my neighbor was here one day and she was near the radio when someone stopped by. she turned it off. not knowing that she really moved the selection. so that in the middle of Mozart suddenly there was preacher demanding that i save my soul by sending him money. it took two weeks to get it right. books on CD are great but the ones from the library are usually scratched and trying to go from wet clay to stop the noise when it hits a scratch is difficult. and some of the readers are so dramatic that their voices drop to nothing when they reach the end of a sentence. in florida there is a classical station that i can get in my car in the driveway but not in either the house or the studio. a young man in the neighborhood turned it to the classical station for me and we heard classic ROCK. not the same.
