  1. Several years ago, Gail Sheehy wrote a book titled "Passages: Predictable Crises of Adult Life" (I just discovered another book by Gail, New Passages that is also available on Amazon). I believe that the veterans here on the forum have likely witnessed Patterns: Predictable Crises of the Clay Artist and I wonder what identifiable stages we can identify in our own journeys into clay/pottery/ceramics?...and what are the indicators of where we are (individually) along those paths? Maybe we identify just one predictable crisis and then have the forum describe the symptoms and how they moved forward? Peace, -Paul

  3. In my non-clay world, I deal with hackers and data security...it is no contest, clay is much more fun even when it is frustrating :)

Clay is a lovely break from running after a small child. And before that I worked in Special Ed. Clay is better than that too. (I did love working with the kids though, please don't let lightning strike me!)

Same here, my studio gets a little heat from the house. It's enough to keep it from freezing. I use a electric heater that looks like a radiator for warmth.

  6. I allowed someone into my studio on Christmas day...I don't do that. But I'm thinking that its going to be OK if I 'open up' a little more. Still processing that thought.

  9. So much cardboard in the studio, I think I dreamed I built a huge box shack and my property taxes went up...better stop sniffing the box tape, I guess :)

I've often thought about stacking cardboard boxes filled with cardboard and making a backstop in my living room for an indoor shooting range.

  10. That moment when you back up to a loading dock and a forklift approaches with a full pallet of dry materials...and you look at your SUV and say, "Sorry, Bud" :)

I say that to my PT Cruiser when they just load 200lbs of clay in it. My supplier is close by so I can run down and get clay anytime.

  11. Starting to get a feel for what a "rhythm" looks like in the balancing act of 'making and marketing'...'makes me appreciate much more those who do this full time in the clay world.

  15. Still massaging the sketch problem concept: Not-a-Handle Handle From a 1 to 2 lb clump of well-wedged (or pugged) clay: Pull a very long handle Make it a little longer...maybe 18" to 24" Without breaking or cutting into sections... Create a form that is NOT a handle. Give your creation a sniglet-like title -Paul
  16. How about something that doesn't require a huge commitment of time...like a sketch problem: Cube-o-Rama Take enough clay to make a 1" cube (2.54 cm)...and take a picture Make something functional/whimsical from the cube Take progress pictures and share Post final project with an appropriate cubical-functional-whimsical title Send 25 cents to my PayPal account OK...everything except that last bullet-point -Paul
  17. Finally launched Etsy Shop last week and had 1st sale this morning...not much, but it is a start! :)

Good luck, I hope it is what you are looking for. We built a smaller house with a studio and large garage for my husband to restore cars in 10 years ago. Loving every minute of living here.

  23. From the album: Custom Mugs and Commission Concepts

I have my share of commercially produced stamps (particularly logos and finely detailed items), but I still enjoy sitting in an easy chair with my feet-up and carving clay stamps to be used on various projects. It is an exercise of patience for me and a learning experience to be aware of when the clay tells me that its OK to carve/cut/trim. I've wondered before if an exhibit of clay artist's bisque stamps might be a fun thing to organize.

  24. Most of these are ideas for commissioned work...somehow, I've been pegged as someone who produces custom mugs for a special occasions. I am OK with that just as long as mugs are still 'fun' to make.
