  1. Exceptional work, Evelyne. Well done! -Paul
  2. Must. Mix. Glazes. I have failed at training my buckets to do their own mixing. :(

Mark - It is important for the male buckets to learn how to keep their lids down :)

Giselle - Bucket "tough love"...I'm making a note of that right now! LOL

Well, in the Harry Potter movies, there is a pan that scrubs itself. We just have to learn the basics of that, and transfer it to glaze mixing...

  3. From the album: Tornado Pot Sketches and Progress Images

I understand that tornadoes are measured on the Fujita Scale (not to be confused with a Fajita's impact on my scales) and ranked by the intensity of the destruction to human-built structures and vegetation...basically, 'how much the tornado Eats". This information is the inspiration for "EF-3 The Eater", a planter with facial features, including a tongue that has snatched a small structure like a lizard might catch a bug. And yes, this one is a little creepy...even for me This container (greenware) stands 19" tall and is contructed of three separate, wheel-thrown pieces. The upper-most piece has been altered and has hand-built pieces added.

  4. TJR, I clean it up once a year whether it needs it or not *grin* (just kidding). Construction in the house has spilled over into the studio right now and it IS a mess. -Paul
  5. You know you are on the wheel too early in the morning if you dip your sponge into your coffee rather than the water bucket :) #JustSayin

  8. SusanL... So true. Even an old dog can repeat silly mistakes (or something like that) "The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it." -Arnold H. Glasow
  9. Babs, I'm starting to believe that tornados and kilns just don't mix well Thanks for the note!, -Paul
  10. SusamL - It may be time to scrape the hubby off the wall and get your pieces exposed to the marketplace (IMHO)...your illustration technique is certainly a plus! -Paul
  11. Bummer, Guinea. That is was such a nice piece! -Paul
  12. Alabama, I'm hoping that people don't believe that I take this tornado theme too lightly. From my own experience of having a tree fly into my house from two doors down the street during a tornado, I know that it isn't much fun (and royally destructive). At the same time, capturing some of the whimsy of the Wizard of Oz does allow for a lighthearted narrative of some sort. And who knows, there may be a market for this sort of craziness...either way, it has been a fun project and I do hope to make some plant happy upon conclusion.

May went quickly due to copious amounts of spam, two tornadoes, plus the earthquake inside your kiln!

Alabama, Pres...you guys are probably right on all points. This was a crazy month!

  14. From the album: Tornado Pot Sketches and Progress Images

Version Two (EF-2) of the Tornado Planter has just started a long drying phase. With the help of Photoshop, I shaded out the messy studio so the planter is a little lot easier to see. This one is about 4" taller than the previous effort and the legs of the Wicked Witch are a little larger as well. The container is three wheel-thrown pieces assembled together with the addition of the 2 hand-built legs and 7 building parts. The entire work is stoneware and roughly 21" tall at the greenware stage.

I have used clay bags in my scrap bucket. While throwing any scrap goes in, while trimming, while cleaning. When bag is full, it gets twisted shut and turned upside down under wedging table. After a few weeks, taken out judged and wedged with clay that will balance out dryness/wetness.

Yeah! That's what I do, too. Used clay bags are so useful. :3

I use the slop bucket contents as a starter for mixing dry materials and/or when the mix in the pugger is a little too dry. I still do some re-constituting on the wedging table.

  17. Very nice...like leopard spots. -Paul
  18. I could use one this shape with the longest side 6.5"...but these are almost to handsome to get all covered in clay Nice stuff, -Paul
  19. This is my mistake, Guinea...'completely preventable had I not been in a hurry (or having a 'senior' moment). The pieces have been retired (trashed) and the kiln is all vacuumed out and ready to roll.
  20. From the album: Tornado Pot Sketches and Progress Images

It looks like it is back to square one on this project. Attachments to this piece created some sizable air pockets that I did not pierce with a needle to allow air to escape...so, it didn't, and this is the result. It is quite a mess. Thankfully, it is not a mistake that I make often.
