  1. Judith, The background was created by masking off areas (literally with masking tape) and then spraying multiple layers of glaze. Thanks for the kind note!, Paul
  2. It is nice enough in the studio today that I have the outside door open...and I can mop without fear of creating an ice rink! :)

Our cold spell is over for a while 66 today 76 tomorrow. Maybe some of this hot air will blow your way.

  4. Something that is more like a sketch problem might have a broad reach...like, start with one cubic inch of clay and make something functional? something whimsical? something humanoid? These could be quicker turnaround projects while the quarterly thing happen, 'just a thought, -Paul
  5. I'll have to wait until late evening to open the latest gas firing...unless I can find a little robot-guy in a fire suit to squeeze through a peep hole and broadcast pictures from inside...OK, so I still get excited to see new work, so shoot me ! *grin*

Opened the kiln Saturday morning. It was a good Cone 10 reduction firing. There are at least a couple of pieces that I feel really good about. I will be starting over with a new batch of Ohio White...not happy with that mistake.

  6. I have that uneasy feeling that I accidentally added 2x the amount of Bentonite to a 5 gal mix of Ohio White...And I won't know the exact effect until I test it. Pooh!

You do so have to concentrate during some aspects of ceramics - glaze mixing being one. For me, when attaching & refining delicate clay stencils (cut from 1/8" thin slabs) to the rim of bowls - the slightest loss of focus and I can catch the stencil and it's irreparably broken. As an inexperienced thrower, I also have to avoid throwing when I'm tired! Hope you can salvage the glaze!!

Do you have a little Easy-Bake kiln to test your batch with? Man, I wish I had one of those little babies!

  7. I am starting to really like slab constructed mugs...with all this practice, one might conclude that I "under-stein" the process :) *groan*

Oh Diesel, I blame the bad puns on that new, earthy coffee...you know, the one that was 'ground' this morning (I'll go sit in the corner now) :)

  8. It seems like such simple thing...pouring glaze through the spout of a tea pot back into the glaze bucket. It takes real talent, however, to consistently land one big splash as a direct hit to the crotch. It is not a pretty picture :)

  10. Just so you know... a sharpened needle tool, when knocked off a countertop, can put a hole in one's foot. No need to try this for yourself, trust me :)

I've never dropped one, on my foot, but I was mixing my classroom relcaim bin by hand, and felt a poke. I took my hand out, and it was sticking through the top layer of skin. No blood, just a discussion with the class...

  16. One more decal firing and one more lustre firing and I am off to help Santa. Ho, Ho, Ho!

  17. I was showing a lady my son's soda fired work at the pop-up market yesterday. She seemed truly interested. Then she asked, "Coke, or Pepsi?" It took me a second before I cracked up :)

take any vase and put a small hole in it, or even turn a teapot lid upside down and what do you get with a little ingenuity. 36 yrs of teaching made me a skeptic if it was questionable.

  18. Finished a long day of working a holiday pop-up market... this may be what clay feels like as it is slammed against a wedging table.

Man, I feel you. I went to a huge convention in September, and by the time THAT was over, I looked like a Grand-Mamma from the Addams Family. Took about a week to recover from that horror! :D

  19. First time to run a FaceBook Ad to promote a pop-up gift market...pretty pleased so far. I'll post full report later.

Did you feel it was promoted to the right people? I have seen a few things about paid likes for pages being a bad idea. Not so sure about how ads work.

I have targeted specific zip codes, age range, and financials. I should know more right after Christmas when the ads stop running.

  22. One of those breakthrough days when sketches seem to make sense...anxious to get started.

  23. It was a good (long) day. Fired the gass kiln. Finished one bisque kiln. Fired a decal batch. Loaded another bisque. And for fun did a raku firing. I think I'm getting the hang of this :)

It is the truth. Last night I had a student walk up to me carrying a freshly constructed, hand-built, life-size boot that was probably 3/4" thick at the thinnest point...and she asked, "Will this get into tomorrow's bisque firing, I really need to glaze it over the weekend?". *headspin*
