  1. From the album: Tornado Pot Sketches and Progress Images

I have never really liked any of the nursery containers that things like water lilies grow in, but like even less the kinds of pots that need to rest on the bottom of my pond. This sketch is my compromise: make a ceramic rim that slips into the top of a 3-gallon container with a flange that can retain additional pebbles (to hold the soil and keep the fish at bay) as well as providing some additional cover (under the rim) for the fish to hide. This project is actually happening...I hope to have finished images up soon.

  2. From the album: Tornado Pot Sketches and Progress Images

This is coming from an old Honey-do list, to create something involving water play and ceramics near the entry to our home/porch. I'm actually thinking that it would be constructed in about 5 parts and bisque fired. The actual 'assembly' might be the glazing/fusing of the pieces in a single glaze firing...still thinking about the logistics and what to do should one part get broken or damaged.

  3. From the album: Tornado Pot Sketches and Progress Images

Two part construction container for sustaining plant life. Bowl form at the bottom captures any overwatering via small holes in the sides of the interior cylinder. Granted, this is not original at all, but the execution/technique is intended to deliver an original/loose/organic style.

  4. Off to a slow start for the late spring...stomach virus kept me off the wheel for a few days and 'vegetating' on the sofa...starting to feel human again though, thank goodness!

That's a good one, Mark C....but I think I am a 'carrier' for March Madness *grin*. Thanks all for the well wishes!

  5. You know it is the end of the semester when the shelves you are using to re-load the kiln are still warm from the previous firing. Proof that a little procrastination goes a long way :)

  6. I admire the way your handles emerge from the curve of the belly...it makes me feel like the handle is truly a part of the form and not just an attachment. Nicely done, -Paul
  7. I opened up a bag of clay that I mixed, pugged, and wrapped over a year ago...I am more convinced than ever that age improves throwing (at least for the clay...hopefully for the maker).

Preston can speak with experience in dealing with frozen/thawed clay. I still wedge my clay (perhaps less if pugged & de-aired)even if it has aged.

    3. Pres

      Pres

Frozen clay is easy to start with wedging if you cut 2" off of each side of block and reverse to the inside, then let sit for a few more days.

I think a year should greatly improve both.

  8. The explosion in my bisque kiln this morning scared me so bad...'thought it was a gun shot & was just about to report it to the police.

You should always pack heat when throwing, because when seconds count, police are minutes away. Sometimes you need that extra special tool just to put that unruly coffee cup or bowl out of its misery. A 22 cal. works up to 3 lbs. clay. A 38 cal. works up to 8 lbs of clay, and a 9 mm works for clay vessels over 8 lbs. of clay. My neighbors can tell the difference between a bad coffee

cup or stein! My dogs no longer flinch!

Greenware wasn't dry? I've never had an explosion ... what caused it?

    4. ChenowethArts

      ChenowethArts

To all: It was wet greenware that exploded...kiln is fine (now that it has been emptied and thoroughly vacuumed)...still laughing at Alabama's "calibrated" recommendations :) I can only image how police would respond to the mention of "kiln"...'never really thought about it until now...there HAS to be a good joke there somewhere. -Paul

  9. It is time to retire my 30+ year-old Creative Industries MP wheel...controller, motor, and bearings are pretty well toast. *Big Sigh*

  16. I have two very large containers of dried Coleman Porcelain staring at me. I really don't want to sound ungrateful for the 'gift'....what I wouldn't do for a nearby ballmill :)

    1. Denice

      Denice

I got a gift like that years ago. I came home and there was 10 5gal buckets of dried clay in my driveway. No idea what temp of clay it was. We lived near a dry creek so we dumped them there.

    2. ChenowethArts

      ChenowethArts

Marcia, That is the direction I am taking now: Doing one 5 Gal. bucket of ping-pong ball sized chunks at a time, placing those in a heavy plastic bag with minimal water, then partially submerging the bag into a trash can container filled with water. I want to see how this goes. Many thanks for the input!!

if you can, chop it up with a sledge hammer and presoak it. Add paper pulp it you like of just resoak and dry to a good throwing consistency. Don't over wet it so it separates. stir with s drill attachment regularly. Then, dry.I recycle it regularly. If you use a jiffy mixer or a heavy drill mixed, the lump dissolve easily.

*begin whine* Belmont University is closed for a second day in a row...there have been only 3 (maybe 4) closures in the last 15 years before these two days. It is truly N.A.S.T.Y. to get around walking or driving.*end whine*

  25. These just seem to scream, "Touch Me!" ...great wedding of the forms and the glazing technique. -Paul
