Hi All y’All…Just wanted to let you know that I’m going in for hand surgery in a couple of hours to fix a trigger finger and maybe another potential problem call Dupuytrens Contracture…I’m expecting all to go well, but may not be at the keyboard for a couple of days and the clay for about a month...we’ll see…

All went well with the surgery now that all my fingers have gotten normal sensation. Up until about 10PM last night I was concerned because the ring finger was still numb and I thought there might have been some nerve damage, but sensation started to return before I went to bed. This morning, everything is about as normal as can be expected after a surgery. It will be about a month before I can resume normal everyday activities.
-
That's great news!
-
Usual after surgery, good to hear things are going well,
BEST,

Bought an 8" Samsung tablet last week but came to the true realization that I have no use for it. It's being returned tomorrow...

Between a smart phone and laptop I would not have a use for one. I can see how for children it would be fun for games.
-
I communicate here almost exclusively on a tablet.
-
I use mine for traveling and storing books to read.

I finally gotten my hands on the clay after more than a year and two hand surgeries. Yaay!

I know that feeling! Good luck and happy potting. :-)
-
Good for you. Have so much fun.
-
I am so happy for you Johnny! I know how it is and how happy one can be when everything is possible once again. Enjoy clay and show us the results.

I was just reminded how fragile bone-dry greenware is when I was transporting a stack of berry bowls from my studio to my garage to load into the kiln...broke 2. Will open the kiln this afternoon to unload 40 pieces and get ready for glazing and horsehair Raku...

One loss in the firing...a lid came apart on the jar it was made for...might have been a tad tight. I'll just have to make another lid. Otherwise, all went well...glazing to follow.
-
Do you standardize lids and rims? Used to not do so, but now try to with everything.
-
A great auction! KVIE sold the trio of pots for $350...way more than the retail of $120!

YAY!

wonderful! (do you know that this forum says you do not accept personal messages? if that is your choice, i respect that but i wonder if you know about it)
-
I did not know that...how do I change that? Thanks !
-
Got half the farm planted...hope to the rest planted by the end of this week with the cooler weather...then more time in the studio!

That must be very satisfying. Good on you donating too!
-
Nice!
-
Well, the entire crop is in and now comes the hardest part...waiting for it all to grow and start to produce. Harvested the first of what, I'm sure, will be hundreds of squash
-
Wow...has this summer flown by! The farm production is slowing down. The days are getting shorter...this all means more time in the studio with my hands on the clay instead of in the dirt and manure!

It's about 1/4 acre planted, which netted me about $700 in sales at my streetside veggie stand on weekends during the summer. Next year I'll have some of my pottery and other wares for sale also. Looking forward to the rainy season in the studio!
-
I did not know you had a rainy season?
-
Yes, Mark, down here in the Sac Valley we have 2 seasons...rainy & hot. 98 yesterday with a cooling trend on the way!
-
It's 7AM; 1080 deg F on my first kiln firing in more than 4 years and the first ever ^04 bisque/glaze firing with my new Orton digital controller...The first 2 hours were a real disappointment when i saw the TCL message on the controller. The kiln didn't fire. I had ultimately realized that I hadn't pushed the reset button on the kiln sitter. Pushed the button and the kiln came to life! The firing took 12Hrs 18 min, but only reached 1941 degrees which is about halfway between ^...

I remember that 'forgot to push the reset button' moment too. Such a relief when you realise it's nothing major. Hope all ends well.
-
Worse than this, today I forgot to put the thermocouple in the peephole (a retrofitted one) & set the kiln for a bisque firing. 2 1/2 hrs later heard error message beeping! It had reached 500oC! Reset programmer thinking it would continue from 500oC without noticing the programmer said it was in the first segment, when actually near end of 2nd one! Spotted this 3 hrs later by which time temp was down to 220oC. Moved program on to 2nd segment and now keeping my fingers crossed...

Sweet

92 degrees in the studio yesterday evening (no A/C), 112F outside as we battle triple digit heat for the next week in Northern CA. Managed to use a piece of 5" crown molding for an interesting pot profile...

POTS SHOULD BE DRYING WELL
-
Great for some, not for others. I have to keep the mugs under cover...otherwise they dry too fast for the handle installation.
-
I was taking a summer throwing class, the classroom was under old cement stadium seating. Our professor had us throwing bowls and setting them on the steps, they would be dry enough to trim before class was over. Denice

Just had a trio of horsehair Raku pots juried and accepted for a local PBS TV station's fall Art Auction!

Good exposure, and stop strutting around!

Congratulations!

Big weekend coming up as my trio of Horsehair Raku jars goes on the auction block at the local PBS KVIE station's annual Art Auction. At the preview Gala on Monday it already had an early bid of $150 against an asking price of $120. My segment of the auction will air in the 1PM hour on Saturday...

Wait, if it's made out of horse hair, wouldn't that be considered weaving?!... I kid.
Great work, for a great cause.

Citrus Heights is one of my old home towns, nice to see a CAD person doing the neighborhood some good. I lived in one of the apt blocks on the east side of sunrise mall when Alexander Calder stabiles and sunlight sculptures were still part of the mall's architecture, before it's makeover anyway, many hours spent at the movies and hanging out.

Will be making a couple of funerary containers this week in a much larger form of my tri-tube bud vases...

It's like you need a miterbox with a fine wire instead of a saw. Would need the clay to be fairly stiff though so it doesn't just squash down. Maybe supporting the tubes with thick foam underneath so the wire could make a clean cut right the way through? (just thinking outloud)
-
Just curious---are you working creamains into the clay body and/or the glazes or are these containers soley to put the ashes in?
-
I just extruded the tubes last night and I could still work them into the surface, but before I attach the tubes, I'll talk with my friend to find out if he wants the ashes worked into the surface. He was happy with the first jar that I made with the ashes embedded into the surface but changed his mind when he saw the bud vase design and color...so at this point the answer is up in the air...

Daylight savings time is going away this weekend which means less time in the yard and on the farm and more time in the studio,,,YAAYYY!

I like having light, when I wake up in the morning, and get ready for work. But I DO NOT like it, when the sun, seemingly, goes down at 4 in the afternoon!...
-
It ends my drying time outside as the sun has lost its power to dry my pots outside . That means I have the heater going in studio and its hot in there and you learn to work in the heat.T -shirt weather always until x-mas production is done.Shop was over 80 yesterday to dry pots before todays bisque load.
-
Mark, how long does it, to dry pots, this time of year, in your toasty studio?
-
It's been 7 weeks since my spine surgery and I'm happy to say that the procedure was a total success! I'm back to doing everything that I couldn't do and more. No back or leg pain at all. Looking forward to firing up the wheel again!

reading is good, have you done the william kent krueger series?
-
I haven't, but I'll give it a look...always looking for a good author. I'll be spending a lot of time perfecting my drone flying skills since I have to spend a lot of time standing and walking,,,
-
I hope you heal quickly, our neighbor got hooked on drones. He joined a drone club and started doing competition flying. He has built a couple of hundred drones, they young members in his group got him started on it. He recently drove to a competition in Florida and won second place not bad for a retiree. Denice

How exciting! Way cool!

Started to glaze the bowls but got an order for a dozen medium, tri-tube bud vases too...the first job for the extruder...

Pics please when you finish.
-
Pix of the latest glaze run...the customer bought 13 instead of 10 bowls. 18-54,55 2nd is the same glaze pattern after removal of a defect in each bowl and firing again. All are Amaco PC glazes layered for effects. In some cases Duncan's RG704 Shino Cream was banded to create the white edge runs...
-
Clever use of glaze: creates visual interest. Well done!
-
Surgey went well. No pain 2 days later. looking forward to a complete and successful recovery...Thanks for your well wishes!

Ill take some Jam or Jelly as well. Good reviews promised.

I will gladly trade you a four star review for a jar of blackberry jelly.

Thanks Johnny; stopped at our local veggie stand and bought a flat of strawberries. Cleaned them, put them in the freezer for 30 min and eating out of the bowl. Yum-EEEE!!

Another successful PBS art auction this year with another 3 horsehair Raku pots selling for over $300...
-
Just got my first Bison carbide cutting tool . It will be a little while before I get to using it since I'm in the process of getting my little farm ready to plant. Also working on glazing another 20 or so pieces before I start throwing again.
-
you will LOVE it! congrats!
-
Yep. Worth every penny.
-
I keep mine in a wall mounted plastic tube next to trimming wheel. Mine is accustom small double ender. Its either in the tube or my hand no other place ever. Of course I have a few spares as I do wear them out in a few years and send them back for new tips. There really is no reason to burn thru cheap carbon steel tools like butter melting in the sun when you are doing this like i do.

Off to the Big Apple Friday to celebrate my folks' 70th wedding anniversary. Will get to play tourist and photographer for 10 days. Will try to visit a pottery or 2 while out there.
