  1. Threw some test cylinders from my high translucency formula this morning: much higher plasticity than any stoneware I have tried.

Joseph: now that I have a clay body that is easy to throw- very well TY. I mixed up some of your Sio2 clay this morning.

Joseph: by the way- the 6.18 COE does not hurt either- much easier to glaze fit.

I imagine so. Good to hear your new clay is rocking.

  2. You are approaching an artistic expression with these pieces: and crossed way past the level of pottery "mug." Once again I encourage you to minimize output in order to create demand. Once again I encourage you to price accordingly..
  3. I knew who made these pieces when I saw the pics in the gallery. and before I saw your name.

3 things. You can see barren white patches, and areas where the glazed is pooled: which indicates it is over-fired. The coarse texture of the clay indicates that the clay is under-fired: immature. The slight off set where the crack is also suggest that the clay was immature. The uneven texture where the glaze did shiver off also indicates a bond failure between the clay and glaze: which also means the flux level in the clay is way off.
  5. Ordered 50lbs of commercial grade-refined hectorite today. This is calcium based in lieu of sodium based. According to specs it should be similar to V-gum T: this should be interesting.

more or less expensive than Veegum?

      I can buy V-gum T wholesale for $5.00 a lb.

  6. Stopped at a lighting store yesterday and picked up a variety of pendant light shades. Mold time for highly translucent crystalline glazed shades.

By early summer I should be making my first pieces. Have to make some molds, and a wheel chuck as well.

  7. Lady: TY for the progression in pictures: nice to see a conceptual piece from start to finish. Very nice work.. well done. Tom
  8. Just read the most directly applicable journal of clay platelet charges in relation to surface area: filled in the remaining blanks I had. I am a happy man.

Terri: when I did not see cation exchange, EF-FF-EE alignment discussed: pretty much knew it was blather.

  9. Amazing what high alumina and feldpsar does to a clean porcelain body.
  10. I like where this is going: some modern technique with some old world traditions.
  11. From the album: Clay Tests

3/4" test cylinder, snapped in half to show how flux moves through the clay body. The bottom is shelf contact, and a distinct line is visible where the clay changed from mature to immature.

  12. Looks like you have found your zone: dialed in, defined direction, and an aesthetic that is uniquely you. Even took the time to trim your foot ring of choice. Welcome home, you have arrived. ........Nerd
  13. I have been coming back to this cup for the last three days. I have kept going back and forth trying to decide if the banding fits the over-all look of the piece. After three days of weighing it over: it fits. Actually, it fits very well. This color combination is rather new to me: took me awhile to understand your aesthetic. Actually, beveling the upper and lower bands around it was another clever trick to reflect light.. Bravo to you!

    50ml Jug

The mouth is larger than it needs to be. Making it narrower, and bringing it to a small V would bring it into better proportions. Although, I do not find it obtrusive as it is.
  15. 70 in mid Febuary. So for the first time in many years during winter- I am going to glaze fire tomorrow.

Hahahaha that's what always happens to my plans. Today I shall throw! Clean the studio instead. Today I shall clean! Spend hours throwing. At this point when I decide what I want to do I should just laugh hysterically and go sleep under the studio table for a couple hours. ;)

I fired a glaze firing Saturday it was 70 here. I'll be ready for another glaze firing by next weekend.

You are zoning in on your "voice.". Am enjoying watching the progression and progress.
  17. Agreed!. I like the scalloped edges much better; but then again I lean towards designs that break up defined lines.
  18. Whoever staged this event deserves mention as well. Well thought out placement, great displays, lighting used effectively, and the background does not compete with the art.
  19. I see a Jackson Pollock thing going on, and yet unique on its own. Springtime: light, fresh, and full of life/light.
  20. Being creative as usual I see. I definitely want to see the pics of the final product: I can already see beauty here without glaze. Nerd
  21. Reminds me of the angel fish I had as a teen. Interesting textures: moon-scape. First two years I started messing with clay, threw more than I could count back into the bowl. It is part of the learning curve: write it down as a lesson that leads to success.

YOU FOUND YOUR VOICE!!!!!!!!!! Marvelous, excellent, perfecto, magnificent, wonderful, beautiful, stunning, mesmerizing, and really cool. In the years to come people will be saying... that is a marko piece.
  23. From the album: crystals

For those exploring crystalline glazes: these tiles show how zinc is used to control crystal growth. Tile 1: 25% Tile 2: 26% Tile 3: 27% (left side)
