  1. Denice: Recently Pres. Posted some pictures of some chalices he had made. My throwing skills are still at the beginner level, but the pictures inspired me to try something new. I have made three attempts, and failed three times: but I am enjoying it. One of the joys of owning a pugmill: open lid, insert failed attempt- start over! T
  2. What are the rituals you follow when the creative juices dry up, or the joys of making pottery becomes tedious because of deadline demands? T
  3. Mixed up 200lbs.,CR2 cone 6 porcelain: let the crystals begin. Going to mix up 50lbs., of cone 11 "wood fire" porcelain next weekend. Tested the cone 11 last year: does strange things :)

      More power to you.

  4. Why? Because I find it strangely curious that glaze had exacting standards and defined chemistry. In my early searches for information about clay chemistry, none existed. Yes, some boundaries had been defined, but formula limits, plasticity parameters, and particle distribution was a loosely defined concept. If I would have not seen a crystalline vase in Williamsburg, Va. In 2007 I would have bought a lathe and made furniture. But alas, I now have my rabbit hole decorated, and there is plenty of brain candy to munch on down here. I did talk to Alice yesterday, she has not aged a bit. Nerd
  5. Does this remind you of 1973? In a round floret crytal sorta way....
  6. Having never read the books or seen the movies: only commercials.
  7. Most interesting. I see a bit of translucence, a bit of bone china, and the effects of Parian. Think you have dialed into a technique that works. I can certainly see market appeal.
  8. I have a crystalline recipe that uses cobalt and tin; plus a dash of rare earth oxide. The end result is similar to yours.
  9. The pastel(s) are unique and appealing. The bone white of the porcelain certainly adds to the effects. Sometimes experimenting pays off.
  10. Obviously cobalt, but adding tin perhaps?
  11. Nice color development. On porcelain I assume?
  12. 1-3 the rest, no idea. Although I have been reading posts on kiln building. ( reason I knew #1 )

  14. Well, it is Christmas Day. Had family in Jordan and South Korea finishing their Masters. Between that and passing the flu around for months: today is Christmas.

I hope you had a great holiday.   Denice

TY Denice. We did our usual, had a local eatery cook up all the food and deliver it. That way, we get to sit around and visit without anyone having to actually work.

Glad your well. Flu is a nasty beast.

  15. Looks to me that you have your voice dialed in.
  16. PeQuad. Captain Ahab's ship from Moby Dick. Slight twist in spelling, but applicable name.
  17. Linda: thought up a name for this piece yet?
  18. Every potter settles into a style that works for them. Favorite clay, favorite glazes, and favorite forming techniques. Yet every potter views pieces made by other potters and marvel over how it was made, glazed, or what clay was used. Pottery goes from digging your own clay, to buying clay, from mixing your glaze, to buying premix, and from pinch pots to mega pots: and everywhere in between. QoTW: What clay, glaze, or forming technique are you curious to try: but have not? (more than one answer is welcome) For me it would be wood firing and raku. Love the results I see posted from time to time. Nerd
  19. Well LT, I would say you are exactly correct. Just came in from practicing again, and noticed I tense up when I get towards the top. So I did a couple cylinders while standing up: not as bad. I just might be one of those "stand as throw" people. Just wish I had more time to spend on the wheel. Bought almost 18 months ago, and maybe have 3-4 weeks of actual time on it.
  20. Question Pres? in the last week my throwing skills have improved dramatically. ( pictures will be up in gallery late next week) is that normal: do you hit a point where things just sorta click? Getting much better at getting the clay off the bottom and up the wall..TY. current problem: when I get up to the top of the cylinder, I start pulling unevenly...wobbles. Even when I slow down, pay very close attention, still pull the top of the cylinder slightly off and open. Remember, I am an old farm boy with bear claw hands: not exactly good for fine delicate work. Help please. nerd
  21. Pres: i threw my new formulated porcelain for the first time today. Incorporating the advice here and elsewhere: actually made a piece I was happy with. Uniform wall thickness, went much smoother. TY all
  22. Mixed/pugged 200 lbs of C6 porcelain with oxide additions specifically for crystalline glaze. Curious to see if adding crystal enhancers in the clay produce larger crystals.
