Starting to see why you are going for the large particle grogs: the forms require it.
  2. I would ask the influences for this form: but that is rather obvious.
  3. Where is the dislike button? My " purity" senses are offended by such wreck less additions! Although, I am curious to see the final result.

So are we going to see this puzzle assembled?
  5. Well, I finally managed to throw a form over the 12" tall mark. Managed to do it without it wobbling and spiraling. Just think, in another two years I might actually be good at throwing.

eight isn't everything. But congrats on your height in this case. Well done. through sheer determination!

Marcie: I am not only testing my ability, but also testing the ability of the clay.

  6. I would say; take the scenic route..but! I think the name is fitting and correct.
  7. Was this lady at kc in 2016? She looks oddly familiar to me?
  8. On the left is a medium gray and taupe. On the bottom are green and yellow. The center is turquoise, and a rose to the right. The top two are translucent bodies with oxides.
  9. I am working on three hybrid clay bodies, that do not fit into current formulation criteria. When I get the bodies where I want them: which includes 0 absorption, higher Coe values, and lower shrinkage rates: will be sending a few potters samples to field test.
  10. Yes, will be doing a series of split tile: half glazed, half not. Curious to see how crystals do on them: they are pure porcelain.
  11. From the album: Clay Tests

Some initial colored porcelain blends. Two of the redder colors are translucent cone six, with small percentages of oxides.

Love this plate. The blending of color is correct.- very well done.
  13. John: My "interpretation" of this piece- reminds me of ivy vines growing along a creek bank. Which for me means- very high marks. Like the calm / serene feeling I get viewing it.
  14. I am finishing chapter 3 on my clay formulation book. Each chapter is running about 4000 words each. I think it will take almost 9-10 chapters to throughly explain the clay codes. Wonder how many could sit through that many chapters on clay?

I love reference books. I own 1 fiction book and like 500 reference books. So I could sit through it. = ) But I am probably your direct target market.

I am going to include chapters on diagnosing clay problems. Which will also include a section on analyzing clay specs.trying to assemble an index on all available ball & kaolin clay- some mines do not have much data.

  15. Did you cut the profile in while trimming, or incorporate it while forming? Makes for a nice break line either way. The liner glaze is visually appealing, but I tend to like softer colors. Like the manly man handle as well.
  16. Actually you are dealing with bloating. Follow Bruce,s recommendation first and see if that solves the problem. Bloating is caused by a couple of things; even though both are related. High iron/magnesium/ titanium clay ( better known as dark brown clay) has high levels of impurities. If the above recommendation does not fix the problem, then you will need to change your glaze firing schedule. From 2050f, up to 2230f becomes more critical in your glaze fire. Nerd
  17. Intriquing piece no doubt. There is an earthy, natural, and alluring quality abou it. Almost like the piece is inviting you to figure it out.
  18. So far I am really liking 75-104 utility porcelain. I formulated it to a specific set of limits in lieu of clay varieties. I can nearly pull up a bowl almost perfectly on the first pull. I pulled up a 4" x 10" cylinder with only one pound of clay. Think I will pug out 25 lbs here shortly, interesting properties indeed.

My supplier was out of 75-104 utility porcelain . I bought some 76-106-hope it works as good?

I will be sending out a few trial samples in another two months or so. Currently running shrinkage and absorption tests. Shrinkage at bone dry green ware was only 3 percent.

  19. A creative glaze. and a very unique look: congrats. However, the forms should be noted as well: they illustrate your eye for proportion. This particular glaze would swallow up smaller forms: very nice work.
  20. You need to frame this and sell copies. Has an unique quality to it.
  21. I am reading a book on clay body formulation from 1959: and the information is relatively the same as in 2017. Why does this bother me?

Feel like I am right at the threshold of formulating an entirely new brand of clay. My wheels have been turning for sometime about this.

If it is porcelain that throws like stoneware count me in.

Think I figured out a name for this form: Trumpet Vase I see the glazes are laying down nicely on the Soldate 60 now.
  23. Think I finally convinced myself to write a book on clay formulation and remedies for common clay issues. Should not take me more than five years.

I would be interested to read it.

  24. Maybe (just maybe) I have found the magic bulltet: 3 days after throwing, my porcelain test body still had enough moisture left to trim easily.

thats even more impressive since CC usually dries clay faster because it removes humidity.

  25. Pres: I always go for those humorous questions that forces potters to question what they are doing. Like when a potter says they do not have a favorite glaze color, and a question reveals they actually do. (everyone does). :Like this one: The power grid has gone down in your area and will not be back up for one year: so what alternative firing method will you choose? Nerd
