  1. just looked up and there is SNOW racing down on my beautiful daffodils!  time to light a fire for the evening.

  2. finally got to cleaning up studio! i may be accepted for our county studio tour in november.  did not realize how many pint and half pint glaze tests moved to the back corner.  now i have to wash the empties.

  3. several years later, 2022, i realize that i have not updated the use of barium in my glaze. it was only 8% but i found that the final glaze surface would scratch easily so it is no longer in use. much too tender for functional work.
  4. congrats to Hulk and the management who picked him!  glad to know another Tom, all the many i know are great guys.

  5. Qotw,   what item that you use in your studio came to you free, almost free or as a gift?

My mother in-law would buy me gift certificates at our local ceramic supplier.   I would try to buy something more substancial  than general supplies.   A few things I remember buying is raku tongs,   caulking gun extruder and kiln shelves.  Most people who have visited my shop get a dazed look in their eyes and leave confused about the equipment involved in clay.   They do get a little excited about the kiln room.  Denice

I had the old shot  years ago now I have had the two shots as it works way better-get that. I made a mistake and got a pneumonia at same time at that was to much-just get one at a time.

Denice, I got the 1st shot when I was 58.  The old shot.  I was horrified by what my friend had gone through.  I paid for it out of pocket. Then I got Shingrix shots about 4 years ago.  I didn't realize they expired.  I will ask my dr about that.  My friend was sick for a month.   It really hits some people hard.  Yes, be sure to put it on your calendar.  We simply do not need more issues that can be easily prevented with a vaccine!   Just my opinion.

My husband's eye doctor is the person who told us that it expires in five years.   We were planning to take a trip to Wyoming in Sept.  keeping my fingers crossed that he is over the shingles by then.   I think Shingrix should give a lot more info on the different types of shingles  I am sure a lot more people would get the shot if they knew they could lose their sight in one eye,  hearing in one ear for have half their face paralyzed.    Denice

Alice, give me a DM with the info. If it’s glitching for you, I’ll post it. It’ll get better visibility than in a status update.

  11. while you are at Highwater, could you please ask what is wrong in the supply chain preventing them from providing little loafers and other clays to their customers?   it has been almost a year since i became aware of the shortage of clay and it has only gotten worse.   will you let us know if you get an answer, please?   thank you.

if you are familiar with the cone 10 clay Loafer's Glory, you can see how they named a cone 6 white stoneware Little Loafer's.  it is a highwater clay.    sorry, old fingers do not like capital letters.

AH: spent several hours researching this issue yesterday. Overseas freight has tripled: so products like NZ kaolin, Grolleg kaolin, mahavir potash, and stains have seen 30-50% price increases. A few smaller ball clay mines have closed: although the large ball clay and fire clay mines are fully functional. The biggest issue is the ceramic tile industry both here and overseas have greatly increased demands. Lastly, the PVC (pipe) industry has been hard hit: and some areas are using clay pipe for emergency repairs. Pottery only accounts for 2-3% of the clay market: which also means we are on the bottom of the supply chain.

Apologies that I never got back to HighWater clays but they are an hour and a half drive from me so I don't get up there often.  Which is why I suggested calling or emailing them.  My last ceramic order I just did through the mail since gas is so expensive now.  Stuff like that doesn't fit on my motorcycle very well.

  12. karen, could you please correct your title on the strontium glaze question?

two different ingredients are mentioned.  the title says barium and the body of the post says lithium.  which is it?

    3. KarenB

      KarenB

I think the title is accurate. I am substituting Stontium for Barium, like the title. Lithium is not an issue here. Thank you for checking! I appreciate the time you take to do this.

  13. i have most of the years between 1973 or so to 1987 or so.  please come and get them.   i am in harpers ferry, wv.

  14. at last, the kiln is on, it is full.  sale will happen after all.  i am going to sit down and do nothing..............

(i had planned to start the firing on last monday)

  15. i do not have a cell phone and use this forum a lot on my laptop.  over the weekend a friend first entered the forum while i was there and  i saw that on her phone, nothing showed except what she was typing.  NOW i understand why new people do not enter their questions in the right place.  they never see the entire screen as shown on a laptop.  if you are new, you are missing a lot without a large monitor.
