  2. Starting to read thru the gerstley borate substitute items on the forum.  Has anyone tried Tom Buck's dry mix substitute?  Or do you think its less problematic to just go with Gillespie Borate?

  5. I am thrilled that I will have a worker bee coming next week to assist me with bringing my backlogged inventory current. I have forced myself stop making anything more until I get this done and all my remaining smalls are coded  for the web & stored in labeled drawers for easy access. Then I can get on with making some samples for a local shop keeper who is interested in a particular line.

Good news indeed Joel. I am familiar with the Stoke on Trent area and it's long history in pottery. Several museums I have strolled through online, and several active potteries. Looking forward to your future pottery pieces.

  9. A pile of pots is in the kiln for a bisque firing...managed to fill the kiln to within 1" of the top...half of it belongs to a couple of friends. Will open in the AM

  10. going to get a new burner today

  11. New kiln arrived and is in place.  Got the kiln vent installed too.  If the pending hurricane doesn't drop too much water on us...should  be able to test fire soon.

Be safe during the storm; looks very nasty on TV. Then go break that new kiln in. Enjoy!

  14. How is everyone? It has been a while. Just wanted to check in and say I love and miss you all! Fired my kiln today. First time in 8 months I have even touched a pot. Made me realize how much I miss this community. Hope everyone's pots are great and their glazes are perfection!

  15. Concrete slab getting poured on Monday. Walls will follow shortly. This will be my new kiln shed for year-round firing ability ...as long as I can shovel my way out there!

  16. Finally, going to take the plunge and buy my first kiln.  I am feeling a little scared....I have some  experience firing someone else's kiln...but it has been a few years.

My space in the basement is all wired, got a great vent area....the house had an old oil furnace removed 30- 30 years ago, but the chimney still has the vent and the opening is close to where the kiln is going.

  18. Finished COE graphs, alumina to CEC comparison charts. Okay, so I lead a boring life! It is what we Nerds do.

Interesting thought, but sodium, potassium and calcium all exchange at different rates. I do think you could work a loose table off of spars. I have enough data tables, might run that over the winter. My next article is due out in August? I think. The one after that will make your lights go on. <teaser ad>

LT: think you misread my post. The COE is one graph, and CEC/ alumina is a separate graph.

  22. Just got back from 3 weeks in Italy : wood firing at La meridian installed our group installation in the amphitheater, then took our work to a gallery in Faenza for a display, and presented talks at the Carlo Zauli Museum.Glad to be back home.

Same here. I get more questions in my PM or direct email, than I do in the forum. Not exactly sure why, but I suspect most members do. Would imagine Mark gets alot of them given his production history.

This forum is probably the largest repository of information on every aspect of all things ceramics. I suspect people are doing searches in lieu of asking questions. Of the 28,000 plus members, less than 100 post on a regular basis.
