White stoneware, thrown on the wheel as a "chopstick" jar and then altered into a teapot. I added the little hand-shaped flower knob. Handles coil and flattened. Spout wheel thrown. Fired at ^6 in an electric kiln. Laguna's Dynasty Red and Peach Blush, Duncan Concepts Bright Kiwi as the underglazed leaves and stems. This came out really nicely for a test set; next time everything is going to be bigger. I plan to make four cups and saucers, sugar, creamer, teapot, and a couple of serving platters. Maybe even a cake stand or two. We'll see.

I threw off the hump for the very first time when I made them. I was totally shocked at how consistent they are in size to each other, almost identical. I was trying for it but I didn't measure. Anyway they only hold 2 ounces of tea. For an EXTREMELY dainty tea party!! Although they look delicate they feel very strong. LOL I'd prefer that the teapot and cups as well held double what they do now, so four cups in the teapot and four ounces in the cups. Better next time!!

It's a bit thicker and more bottom heavy than I'd like. It's also smaller than I intended, only holds 16 oz. However, there are a lot of things I did right. The lid fits really nicely. The handle is comfortable for fitting all your fingers in and pouring even with the teapot full. The spout works (a couple of tiny drips but not bad at all) and the strainer works too. I tried it. So I would say this was a very useful learning experience. And I am far from unhappy with my very first teapot!

That glaze in the sun .... *sigh of happiness* White stoneware, thrown on the pottery wheel, carved in a design of eucalyptus leaves in the wind. Glazed in Mayco's Stoned Denim at ^6 in an electric kiln.

This is my very first platter or plate of any kind, although I have made a few pie plates. I actually intended this to be a pie plate but accidentally "stepped on the gas" just as I was finishing so the walls spun out almost flat. I decided it was a platter instead. I'm very happy with how this turned out. White stoneware, thrown on the pottery wheel, carved in a design of eucalyptus leaves in the wind. Glazed in Mayco's Stoned Denim at ^6 in an electric kiln. (Actually fired twice because the first time a cookie exploded and got shards everywhere.)

  17. Three weeks later I'm finally photographing that huge glaze load. Starting to post in the gallery if anybody wants to see.

I KNOW! Didn't quite know what to do with myself.

The glaze load before that 23 out of 27 items had chunks of exploded bisque in them. So. I'm not getting too cocky yet.

  18. Right now several months' glazed work is in the big and small kiln. I need to fire smaller loads, and more frequently!

Remember the famous saying: "Fire first and ask questions later." Okay, not so famous, I just made it up.

LOL! I had mostly good results. A couple of my new dipping glazes are a bit thick so I'll adjust them but nothing is ruined. My dad insisted on firing at Cone 6 which my Cone 5 glazes did NOT like; I had a couple glazes drip that have never dripped before. Otherwise a successful glaze load!

  19. I've been sick for a week and I'm missing clay.

I felt better on Wed. Spent the day in the studio although my throwing was off. Busy in the house, played with my kid. Big mistake. Thurs back in bed sicker than ever.

  20. I peeked in the kiln, which is too hot to unload. Entire top shelf is ruined. Don't know about the rest yet.

Glaze firing. One single 1/8" thick, 2" diameter cookie exploded at the top and infiltrated every single shelf.

Duncan teacher plus kiln, 3 items did NOT have shards inside. I went to go unload (it's my dad's kiln) and he had ground off every shard so I could refire. All I have to do us touch up.

He knew I was planning to smash them and he was so sad that it was the whole kiln. I don't even know how long it took him. I have a very nice father.

  21. Glaze fire in the kiln with all my new glaze tests. We shall see if I mixed them correctly since Laguna refuses to give specific directions for mixing.

  22. If you want them glazed all over, try Roselli stilts. http://www.theceramicshop.com/store/department/9/Stilts/ You balance the piece on the little wire points. When fired, the stilts pop off and do leave little tiny marks but they are barely noticeable.
  23. From the album: Slip Cast Dinner and Bakeware

I don't know if you can tell from the photo but the teapot sort of "soaked in" the white glaze leaving a matte surface with tiny pinholes in it. Very awful. On the inside the delft blue had incomplete spots that were matte and a totally different color of blue. This was not fixed upon a second firing with another coat of clear, so my sister took it as a garlic storage pot since no food will be touching the incomplete surface.

    Slip Cast Dinner and Bakeware

A series of items I've made with vintage slip molds and altered with slip trailing and beadwork. All pieces are fired to ^6 and I use commercial clay and glazes currently. I'm a beginner, 3 years addicted to clay and just started setting up my own studio in July 2014.
