  1. Yoshi Fujii Seductive Elegance: Clay Carving Techniques This 2-day participation workshop will introduce students to surface embellishment through carving the leather-hard surface. Yoshi will demonstrate using the potter’s wheel to create functional objects (simple cup & bowl forms) to serve as a collection point for visual inspiration. Students will explore the elegant quality of porcelain and seductive beauty possible through hand-carved lines, patterns and motifs and slip trailing to create visual and physical depth for tactile communication. Previous clay experience is required, open to hand-builders or potters. Students may choose to bring leather-hard pots or tiles and design references, grog-free clay recommended. Course fee includes clay and bisque firing. WS03 – Saturday and Sunday 10:00am – 4:00pm, November 9 & 10 Fee: $200 member, $220 non-member Bio YOSHI FUJII is currently a visiting artist with Baltimore Clayworks and was the recipient of the 2008–09 Lormina Salter Fellowship. Yoshi received his B.F.A from University of Southern Mississippi in 2002 and his M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2008.   2. Hello. I love carving on my pots, and am looking for quality carving tools that will give me the preciseness I'm looking for. I understand that diamondcore makes amazing tools, however I do not currently have the amount of money it takes to buy their product. Are there any quality alternatives out there? Thanks!
  3. These are not ceramic artworks so I didn't want to post more than one without asking if anyone was interested in looking. This is crystal from a studio located in Nian, China carved from a Brazilian flawless 5 ton quartz crystal. The master studied the stone for 2 years and carving and polishing another 5 years by a team of a dozen carvers working under the direction of the master. These works are never seen by the public and are only owned by private collectors, although some government museums may have some of his work in their collections
  4. I am new to clay, both hand-building and throwing, and have been making images on pots in two ways- by painting in underglaze and by using commercially available texture mats and roller stamps. I would like to learn to carve into the clay myself. Can anyone recommend some good resource or resources to help me learn to do this? I would be particularly happy for book recommendations.

    I love all the varied shapes a good mug comes in. The shape is my current favorite. It works well to separate the textured areas from the geometric sgraffito in the bottom. It has a pulled handle and commercial glazes and was fired to cone 6 electric.
  6. Hi folks. I've been using a Silhouette Cameo cutter to create vinyl decals I put on my bisque before dipping in glaze to create a negative space design. (it's ain't easy creating a signature look and standing out in an art town) It's challenging (sometimes flat crazy making) because if you pull the decals too soon, glaze runs into the area you want to keep clean and too late, it flakes and chunks come off with the decal and I end up doing a lot of clean up or touch up. Add to that my unnatural love of gooey, reactive, unpredictable and persnickety glazes and it can be a real PITA, especially when doing runs of 200+ pieces. My cutter just broke and I won't be able to afford a new one any time soon. Once I was done stressing out and having a mini meltdown, I decided to try to create something new, different and cooler. I was thinking about carving stamps of my more popular designs and then using crayons as wax resist (I have no love for liquid wax resist and a very complicated history with it) Crayons are crazy cheap at the dollar store and easy to control. Bonus, I can leave some small bits unwaxed to add shadow/more texture... I've only made one stamp, I carved into some craft plaster of paris advertised as “carvableâ€, then pushed wet clay into the carving and bisque fired to create a stamp. So here are my questions…. Has anyone ever used crayons as wax resist? And did they work well for you? What is your favorite carving material for making stamps? I've added a couple of photos of what I've been doing to provide a visual… Thanks in advance

My wife is working with a bunch of jade carvers on some new ring designs, these will also appear in a new book she is working on this is one of the jade rings carved by our friends in China and the inspiration for one of the pieces recently posted in the gallery. it's carved from Dushan jade and is untreated all natural color.
