  2. Finished my 2019 detail budget and I can retain my helper who keeps me current with inventory/spreadsheets/photos. Yay me! (Of course I haven't been to a movie in 2 years, don't have TV and almost never buy clothes, but, hey, well worth it! ) Now I'm setting up my 'to do' calendar-hope I can stick to it this year.

  3. Spent the last few days writing a clay chemistry specific  "glossary of terms." If someone would be kind enough to stop by an uncross my eyes, much appreciated.

sorry, we speak english differently.   btw, i would use the word "stretched" in the definition of extensibility.  using the same word in a definition does nothing to enlighten the reader.

i was only referring to the modern trend of using verbs as nouns and other "silly" modern usage and used "inform" as an example.

so sorry this happened to such a wonderful guy!   now it is time to do all those exciting things that only happen when you are sitting down.   like petting a cat or reading a book.  and thinking about what you want to make next.  or thinking about where to travel when you can.    something TOTALLY different from normal life.

  14. Big apple juicing event this Saturday at our place. Looks like a tuna trip on Thursday .Big show next weekend out of state-time to play some before work.

  15. Nicest customer at my market today. She invited us to a bbq dinner at her place after the market today. Total sweetheart.

  16. How could I find the name of the guy in the Pacific Northwest that is doing the acrylic like flow glazing? My results so far are quite mediocre and I could use whatever guidance I could get from him

  17. Mark I was wondering if you had ever used the Wonderbat system.   I tried it out today, and it didn't want to stay seated in the opening, kept moving up and down.  This is my first time throwing in about 2 years and I have never thrown much on a electric wheel.  The next pot I got out a regular  bat and didn't have any problems centering it.   Does the square need some clay underneath it?  The wheel I got off of E-Bay came with two sets,  it would be a shame not to use them.   By the way I sold my kickwheel so we were able to set up the Brent this weekend.   I also bought a 3 cu. ft. Blue Diamond kiln,  I paid $250 for it.   It has a manufacture date of 1969 on it but has never been used,  it also came with $100 worth of shelves and stilts.   My small Paragon finally bit the dust,  it is around the same age but it is well used.   I like having a kiln that size for special jobs.   Denice

  18. Gas prices are crazy here, $1.57 / litre, works out to $5.97 a US gallon. Expected to go up again later in the week. Glad I don't have to drive to work!!!

  19.  more snow. Free workshop at the Red Lodge Clay Center this weekend. Out of town potters coming to stay with me.  Matthew Kelleher and Shoko Teruyama from Alfred, NY. Nice community asset!

  20. It is snowing hard for 2 days in the US NE and more tomorrow.  NH people trying to get to NCECA are facing cancelled and sold out flights--bummer. I'm not going-my good news is I got my computer back.

  21. Firing the kiln tonight. Extending my firing to 20 hours from 18. I have pretty much settled on my glazes so I am now just trying to fine tune my single firing schedule. I have 4 glazes total and 2 wood ash pastes. All of the glazes are white. How hilarious is that? The last white glaze I added forms a lot of crystallization so I wanted to hold longer at the right temps and I also slowed down my cooling from cone 6 to 1800G at 125F per hour. I am firing two platters that I can barely fit in my kiln, so I am excited that they come out good so I can give them away.

  22. I threw my first bowl today on my new Pacifica wheel and my first ever porcelain bowl. :)

  23. Hi! I ended up here because of your heading "single firing an electric kiln to ^6! I used to visit your area (Antietam and Shepherdstown) frequently when I lived in Maryland. Now I live on an island 10 miles off the coast of Maine where electricity costs 70 cents a KWH!!!! Unfortunately I am addicted to making ceramics.

Luckily I can sell my pots through a co-op here in the summer. Between  costs for boat freight for clay and  electricity,   I don't know if I could afford to sell at wholesale.

As you can surmise, it would be fantastic to be able to save a firing for each piece. Did it take you a long time to figure out how to successfully once-fire?

  24. Ack! My kiln with brand new elements just misfired. Now I have to wait until it cools down before I can start to investigate. Aggravation.
