  1. :D Newbie Here! I hope this is allowed. I am wondering if anyone in the business for years can offer any help. A friend of mine broke the top of his vintage elf cookie jar and I want to gift him the hat as a surprise. I found someone online with the exact mold and willing to make it. Although, they aren't able to really help with the glaze. When you expand the photo it almost appears to be a pearlized glaze. Could this be an undercoat? I'm not a ceramic expert, but I looked through charts of glazes to match up and I can't seem to find anything similar. This was probably made in the 1960's or 70's. Can anyone help me?

if only the hat is missing, what difference would it make if the glaze is not the same as the original?  did the original glaze match the aqua collar?

does the owner plan to sell this item later and require perfection or is it someone who will love the fact that you went to the trouble to replace the lid because of friendship?

  2. In your profile , can't get to albums.

    Another old lady here, help.

it is just below the line and says albums.  click on it and it should take you to 2 pages of photos.  i just can't get them to post in order, the first one is always the last.

  3. Can I low fire a 06 cone glaze and a bisque load in the same firing.  That would be to use the 06 cone bisque schedule to glaze a few pieces?

i have done this kind of thing often.   the important thing is that the firing is going to 06,  therefore, anything that needs to go to 06 can be included.   you should expect to go slowly so impurities can be fired out of the raw clay being bisqued.

BTW, this is a question that should be in the section of the forum devoted to glaze questions.

  4. Great news today...my submission of the Three's A Charm horsehair Raku was chosen for a Juror's Award in "Sculpture" at the KVIE  PBS Art  Auction!

  5. Just got my first Bison carbide cutting tool . It will be a little while before I get to using it since I'm in the process of getting my little farm ready to plant. Also working on glazing another 20 or so pieces before I start throwing again.

  6. Hi, I'm a newbie at pottery and I am looking for a bat system for work pieces that can slightly dry on the bat and not warp the bat. Perhaps as a new potter I tend to use more water that a seasoned potter. I'm looking at Batman, North star, dirty girl wonder bat etc....Any suggestions?

this forum is apparently different from others.   lately, many new people are putting questions in this area.   but they are not titling the question, just using their names.   why is this happening?

linda, if you look at the format on the opening page you will see several headings under which people ask  questions.   yours belongs in the  Studio operations and making work if i remember it correctly.    if you move it to the correct place, you will get correct answers.

  7. Finally playing in the mud today with no adverse side effects...hands felt good on the clay...centering seemed easier:)

  8. Got the stitches out of my hand today and will be able to get my hands on the clay in about a week. The orthopedist said that throwing would be excellent exercise...

  9. Many Years Ago Back In High School In the Art  room was a Potters wheel sitting in the corner collecting dust.

The Art teacher was ant artist and not a Potter, so the wheel was  not being used. One day I asked the teacher if I could use the wheel. I had never done pottery before    So I got some clay and started. I went to the library and took out books on ceramics and throwing on the wheel. When   I started throwing on the wheel a lot of the other Art students   became interested and wanted to    learn how to throw.   The Art teacher saw how good I was at it She asked me to teach others how to throw on the wheel and work with clay.

I was hooked  .When I graduated I went to  an art college to study ceramics . Lot of things happened in the family and I had to leave  college  and take care of the bumps in life.

I finally got  back into ceramics a few years later  bought a Kiln and a Randell wheel and  started making pottery for art shows and flee markets.

Life chained again had to put pottery in the corned again  . I kept my wheel and kiln that  I set up in my home today . I'm slowly digging it out  of the corner   because my son is learning pottery  and im re-hydrating some 50 year old clay for him to use

  10. Well,  hot diggity dog--I have received an invite from the Ceramics Art Network's magazine, Ceramics Monthly, to write a short article w/pics for the Quick Tip series. It will be about my simple "works for me" inventory/storage system.

  11. Going to have the 2 trigger fingers on my left hand repaired in two weeks. I'll try to get some pots thrown before since I'll be away from the wheel for a few weeks after the surgery...

hope all will be well again this time.  do not forget to get to the public library to stock up on thrillers before the big slow down.

  17. I saw a post you had in January that you purchased a Pacifica wheel   in 1972. I just purchased a Pacifica wheel probably about the same age. The wheel is a GT500, contacted Laguna and they have never heard of a gt500.

I am trying to find out what hp the motor is and was wondering if you happen to know.

    Thanks   Ron

ron, just saw this, my internet connection has been down.

i have not heard of it either.   where are you seeing the number?   i have a 400 and they also offered an 800.  could you be reading 5 for 8?  i bought it from the inventor who sold the business to laguna years later.

if it is on the motor, i would have to crawl under the table to see any numbers.   where should i look?   i can use a mirror to see what might be visible  underneath.    just looked with a mirror.  it is very hard to see the label and it is placed where it is almost impossible to read.

i think i remember it was a half horse.

welcome, jess.   looks like nice work so why not put this in the forum section  studio operation and  making work?

  20. Well....all done. Went out and turned it onto High finally. Fifteen minutes later, it shut off. The gap in the front of the lid was up to about a half inch.

hope you are keeping a written record of firings.   it is a good habit to form and will help you keep track of the expected  duration of each type of firing.   as the elements wear, the timing gets longer.

  21. Hello everyone.

Thank you for creating friendly community. So much knowledge and experience is concentrated here...

i am husband of amateur potter, and my duties were to find kiln on Craig’s list and install it, buy sink and install clay trap, and of course to enjoy all the products of my wife’s work...

very nice studio and work done in it!  your wife should be very happy there.   she needs a nice, padded cushion on the stool.  she will sit on it for a long time and being comfortable helps a lot.

it looks like you found a great kiln for her on craigslist, too.

the reward for doing all that work is to be expected to do more.   fortunately, you will both enjoy working together to make beautiful things.   you are a lucky man.

once you have decided on a question, if you put it in the category you think it fits best, you could get an answer.
