  1. I had all three kilns going today-two cone 10 gas glaze fires and a electric bisque-solar system near maxed out running the 48 amp constant load-solar offset 37kw on that fire today. still needed some grid power to get it done in 8 hours.

bet the local fire dept. knows your location so they can ignore lots of reports of FIRE!

  2. Hello!

I have pints of glazes for brushing.  I also have glazes that I have mixed myself.  I would like to know if anyone has any luck using the mixed glaze to brush on or do you think it should be for dipping only?  Thanks

if you would put your question in the section titled  "clay and glaze chemistry" you will probably get excellent advice.   title the question to reflect what you want to know.

single status update is just for news about what you are doing, not a question.

  3. Kiln arrived yesterday, and is now in the shop. I am in the process of reassembling, and have an electrician coming to do whatever needs done with the wiring into service. I am also getting ready to set the vent into the chimney at back corner.

  4. New kiln was shipped today.

oh, don't worry, joseph, your notes will turn up about 10 minutes after you unload the kiln.

  7. I have a number of glazes I have' not used in several years - will they be ok if I mix well and sieve them several times?

hi, welcome to the forum.  it might mix well if you made the glazes yourself.  if they were bought as finished glazes, maybe not.   the ingredients that are in bottled glazes do not blend well if they have dried out.

      did you make the glazes?

  8. ok, all you computer literates and gurus.  i have been "paused".  i do not know why or what it means but i cannot even access my other email account.  any ideas?  my daughter was going to help me set up an etsy shop and then this happened.

  11. :D Newbie Here! I hope this is allowed. I am wondering if anyone in the business for years can offer any help. A friend of mine broke the top of his vintage elf cookie jar and I want to gift him the hat as a surprise. I found someone online with the exact mold and willing to make it. Although, they aren't able to really help with the glaze. When you expand the photo it almost appears to be a pearlized glaze. Could this be an undercoat? I'm not a ceramic expert, but I looked through charts of glazes to match up and I can't seem to find anything similar. This was probably made in the 1960's or 70's. Can anyone help me?

if only the hat is missing, what difference would it make if the glaze is not the same as the original?  did the original glaze match the aqua collar?

does the owner plan to sell this item later and require perfection or is it someone who will love the fact that you went to the trouble to replace the lid because of friendship?

  12. In your profile , can't get to albums.

    Another old lady here, help.

    1. oldlady

it is just below the line and says albums.  click on it and it should take you to 2 pages of photos.  i just can't get them to post in order, the first one is always the last.

  13. Can I low fire a 06 cone glaze and a bisque load in the same firing.  That would be to use the 06 cone bisque schedule to glaze a few pieces?

    1. oldlady

      oldlady

i have done this kind of thing often.   the important thing is that the firing is going to 06,  therefore, anything that needs to go to 06 can be included.   you should expect to go slowly so impurities can be fired out of the raw clay being bisqued.

BTW, this is a question that should be in the section of the forum devoted to glaze questions.

  14. Great news today...my submission of the Three's A Charm horsehair Raku was chosen for a Juror's Award in "Sculpture" at the KVIE  PBS Art  Auction!

  15. Just got my first Bison carbide cutting tool . It will be a little while before I get to using it since I'm in the process of getting my little farm ready to plant. Also working on glazing another 20 or so pieces before I start throwing again.

  16. Hi, I'm a newbie at pottery and I am looking for a bat system for work pieces that can slightly dry on the bat and not warp the bat. Perhaps as a new potter I tend to use more water that a seasoned potter. I'm looking at Batman, North star, dirty girl wonder bat etc....Any suggestions?

this forum is apparently different from others.   lately, many new people are putting questions in this area.   but they are not titling the question, just using their names.   why is this happening?

linda, if you look at the format on the opening page you will see several headings under which people ask  questions.   yours belongs in the  Studio operations and making work if i remember it correctly.    if you move it to the correct place, you will get correct answers.

  17. Finally playing in the mud today with no adverse side effects...hands felt good on the clay...centering seemed easier:)

  18. Got the stitches out of my hand today and will be able to get my hands on the clay in about a week. The orthopedist said that throwing would be excellent exercise...

  19. Many Years Ago Back In High School In the Art  room was a Potters wheel sitting in the corner collecting dust.

The Art teacher was ant artist and not a Potter, so the wheel was  not being used. One day I asked the teacher if I could use the wheel. I had never done pottery before    So I got some clay and started. I went to the library and took out books on ceramics and throwing on the wheel. When   I started throwing on the wheel a lot of the other Art students   became interested and wanted to    learn how to throw.   The Art teacher saw how good I was at it She asked me to teach others how to throw on the wheel and work with clay.

I was hooked  .When I graduated I went to  an art college to study ceramics . Lot of things happened in the family and I had to leave  college  and take care of the bumps in life.

I finally got  back into ceramics a few years later  bought a Kiln and a Randell wheel and  started making pottery for art shows and flee markets.

Life chained again had to put pottery in the corned again  . I kept my wheel and kiln that  I set up in my home today . I'm slowly digging it out  of the corner   because my son is learning pottery  and im re-hydrating some 50 year old clay for him to use

  20. Well,  hot diggity dog--I have received an invite from the Ceramics Art Network's magazine, Ceramics Monthly, to write a short article w/pics for the Quick Tip series. It will be about my simple "works for me" inventory/storage system.

  21. Going to have the 2 trigger fingers on my left hand repaired in two weeks. I'll try to get some pots thrown before since I'll be away from the wheel for a few weeks after the surgery...
