  1. Three weeks later I'm finally photographing that huge glaze load. Starting to post in the gallery if anybody wants to see.

^^ congrats, I have never had that happen yet. TO THE FUTURE!

I KNOW! Didn't quite know what to do with myself.

The glaze load before that 23 out of 27 items had chunks of exploded bisque in them. So. I'm not getting too cocky yet.

  2. Right now several months' glazed work is in the big and small kiln. I need to fire smaller loads, and more frequently!

Remember the famous saying: "Fire first and ask questions later." Okay, not so famous, I just made it up.

LOL! I had mostly good results. A couple of my new dipping glazes are a bit thick so I'll adjust them but nothing is ruined. My dad insisted on firing at Cone 6 which my Cone 5 glazes did NOT like; I had a couple glazes drip that have never dripped before. Otherwise a successful glaze load!

  3. I've been sick for a week and I'm missing clay.

Mark: I have an appointment next week. So scared.

I felt better on Wed. Spent the day in the studio although my throwing was off. Busy in the house, played with my kid. Big mistake. Thurs back in bed sicker than ever.

  4. I peeked in the kiln, which is too hot to unload. Entire top shelf is ruined. Don't know about the rest yet.

Glaze firing. One single 1/8" thick, 2" diameter cookie exploded at the top and infiltrated every single shelf.

Duncan teacher plus kiln, 3 items did NOT have shards inside. I went to go unload (it's my dad's kiln) and he had ground off every shard so I could refire. All I have to do us touch up.

He knew I was planning to smash them and he was so sad that it was the whole kiln. I don't even know how long it took him. I have a very nice father.

  5. Glaze fire in the kiln with all my new glaze tests. We shall see if I mixed them correctly since Laguna refuses to give specific directions for mixing.

  6. If you want them glazed all over, try Roselli stilts. http://www.theceramicshop.com/store/department/9/Stilts/ You balance the piece on the little wire points. When fired, the stilts pop off and do leave little tiny marks but they are barely noticeable.

    Slip Cast Dinner and Bakeware

A series of items I've made with vintage slip molds and altered with slip trailing and beadwork. All pieces are fired to ^6 and I use commercial clay and glazes currently. I'm a beginner, 3 years addicted to clay and just started setting up my own studio in July 2014.

I don't know if you can tell from the photo but the teapot sort of "soaked in" the white glaze leaving a matte surface with tiny pinholes in it. Very awful. On the inside the delft blue had incomplete spots that were matte and a totally different color of blue. This was not fixed upon a second firing with another coat of clear, so my sister took it as a garlic storage pot since no food will be touching the incomplete surface.
  9. Love the dapple green glaze!
  10. I think your brain works like mine! Looking at your work, I see a similar combination of structured, symmetrical pieces and freeform abstract.
  11. Just did an initial mix of my dry Laguna glazes. I've been buying premixed all this time. I feel kind of like I'm making a cake from boxed mix after buying them at bakeries all my life. ;) One day I'll make one from scratch.

I've used dry before but went back to the premixed. Just to save the time.

White chunks can also be frit- not unusual for them to form if the dry mix draws moisture. The easy fix- place it in the kiln at 160F, and then sieve.

Hmm. I don't know enough about glaze chemistry to tell the difference. All I know is, I'm glad to be paying less, and making sure those hunks are not on my pottery. ;) I expected mixing the glazes to take way more time than it did. Keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

    Copper Dolphin Studio

This is my dad's work (we share studio space). We're learning together, which is fantastic beyond words.
  13. From the album: Copper Dolphin Studio

A shelf full of my dad's pots. I think he's made as many this week as he has in the whole past YEAR. He overcame a huge hurdle when he started throwing left handed, even though he's right handed. His pots have changed and improved in leaps and bounds. I'm almost as excited for him as if it was me making this progress.
  14. Thanks! This was a design I worked up for my sister, and it came out so nicely that I have now made five others. A lime and a teal one have sold, so these are my "winter" colors. Eventually I'll have one in each color.
  15. I'm determined to throw tomorrow no matter what! My son knows how to make peanut butter sandwiches, he can make lunch for both of us and feed me at the wheel! ;)

My son is a fruit kid as well. He will eat a whole box of blueberries, strawberries, etc etc like it was nothing.

Lol yes! We bought this enormous bag of clementines, snd an hour later half were gone and this enormous pile of peel was on the table! I mean there were like 30 in the bag.

I like Satsumas from LA. (Lower Alabama). Satsumas are tangerines but tangerines are NOT Satsumas! Make a list of what you plan to throw. Copy from an example. Use the example as a blueprint, to let you know what and when to do the next step.

  16. Is that all coil texture on the outside of the bowls or did you flatten the coils then incise the design? Either way I very much like this look.
  17. This is very cool. Looks like it came straight out of a dig! (That's meant to be a compliment, I really like it!)
  18. Thanks Mark! No, I use iron oxide a bit. I have a hard time getting the mixture right. This was 50% oxide, 50% water and still did not do anything exciting in my opinion. There is nothing like the feeling of carving leather hard clay.
