  1. Good work on the stoned denim. When I worked with that glaze I was never able to get those results. Beautiful carvings.
  2. Did you roll a hump of clay then cut off the lid, and dig the inside out? It looks awesome. Well done.
  3. Throw yunomi off the hump is probably my new favorite thing to do. its so refreshing to be able to control the foot height after throwing the pot.

Ooh never thought about that aspect ....

yea, a lot of the times ill make a nice yunomi on a bat when I just get a feeling to make one in my sessions, then after ive made it, im like, this foot is too short for the cup height and I dont like it. throwing off the hump solves this problem. and i need to learn to throw off hump anyways cause I am going to start making a lot of jars and lids are much easier off the humpedy hump.

I tried it once. Threw two small bowls and a vase. Worked pretty well but it was strange because I'm used to weighing everything.

  4. Firing some more test pots tonight, throwing a lot of clay tomorrow, mixing some more glaze that I ran out of and then changing my elements and doing a break in firing. Busy weekend.

Should I send you a case of Red Bull? 2 packs of No-Doz, and 5 gallons of coffee?

No thanks. Just sweet tea does the trick.

  5. Firing some new glazes and combinations, designed for a slow cool schedule. Looking for that elusive semi matte with some variation. Pretty excited.

I think my work is going to go in a different direction for a while. I am interested in exploring some of the surfaces I got in my firing. Most of the pieces were poop, but there are spots on the pieces that are beautiful and very interesting.

Can't wait to see your results good or bad.

  6. I always liked the look of glazed pots. It is neat how all that surface and stuff just gets covered up, then reappears in all its glory later on. Beautiful process.
  7. What is the manganese for? Just curious since you posted this bowl and picture.
  8. So, did it work? I mean its a pretty pipe. haha.
  9. I miss warm weather. Please come soon Summer Days! I much rather sweat than freeze while throwing pots.

It's La Nina I think. But I have no idea what that means. All I know is its 70 degrees one day, and then below freezing the next. It's absurd and makes everyone have sinus problems all the time. I dont like to work when its that cold, cause even with my heater in the garage it still hurts my body.

You hang in there Joseph I think your doing great work and spring will be here soon.

Thanks. This week is supposed to be nice, so back in the studio I go!

  10. So I have never seen stacking jars before. Does the bottom of the next jar play the lid for the jar below? Very beautiful.
  11. I think they are fantastic. Beautiful work as well. Do you ever take them down and play them?
  12. Tomorrow is glaze day. Prepped all my bottoms and lined all my insides! Looking forward to the weather 65F tomorrow! Beautiful day to start February.

Joseph, you should try a currie tile next time. Once you try it you won't go back :D

I thought about a currie tile or a tri blend. I am not sure where to start. I probably wont even worry about it for a while as I have so much other more important work to do. Maybe when I get some slow time or I just feel like taking a break to experiment.

Posted some of the stuff from the kiln, just a few pictures. My wave mug came out ok. Needs more work. Can't wait to put that on the inside of a large shallow bowl.

  13. I think I could make mugs for the rest of my life and be happy never making another kind of pot.

It kind of appears you already do Joseph. At the very least, you work has a "weathered" quality.

This is fantastic. Nice work. Will you post pictures of it fired?
  16. Ah.. Spraying again before the rain comes in. Guess it will be another week of throwing a ton of pots. I am looking forward to nailing down some spraying styles cause its definitely slower than dipping.

Yea. I am in it for the long haul. Once I find the combinations I want I can just spray those and it will drastically increase my spraying time. I pour the insides and wax the bottoms ahead of time, so all I have to do is spray the outsides. I also have 5 spray guns. My brother in law is a auto body painter he gave me 3 guns he doesn't use anymore, but they work fine for what I need them for.

*decrease my spraying time* not increase.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

LOL I read it as "decrease". I like dipping for the bright inside colors I like; but I will probably start spraying the clear I do on the outside since it only needs one coat anyway.

  17. Now that's a chimney! How did it do? Did you get to temp this time?
  18. Ah the joys of spraying glazes in a winter storm outside in 36 degree weather. What a life! Ceramics!

  19. Picked up my compressor and sprayers today. Going to hook it all up tomorrow and start practicing. Really excited about the ability to control my glaze application a lot more than dipping and brushing.

Welp. Sprayed for the first time after breaking in my compressor etc. It is interesting. Going to take some practice to get used to the movements and spray gun techniques. I like the low amount of glaze I have to have on hand though. I made some tall cylinders to practice on then fire to see how each different application comes out.

    3. glazenerd

      glazenerd

High Volume Low Pressure. Remember, low pressure coming into the gun.

    4. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

Yea I kept the pressure at around 25 coming into the gun.

  20. I was wondering if that was solid clay or hollowed. Makes more sense now. I was thinking man that thing gonna be a brick house to move. I should have known better. Rookie thinking.
  21. Testing my new glazes and schedule on actual pots. First firing on 2016. If this is successful going to make larger batches and get to work.

Wonderful results! I love the dark one with the tiny silver dapples, but my very favorite is the black/red one that looks like strips of fabric are wrapped around the cup under the glaze. Wonderful.
