  1. Opened my kiln yesterday and was gratified with the products. Check out the album photo below for a sample .

  2. Opened the kiln yesterday after running a "break-in" ^6 firing after installing new Euclids coils. Looking forward to my first bisque firing later this week and then on to glaze firing a few moonshine jugs for a customer!

  3. Opening the veggie stand today. Will also be selling pottery...

Stopped at a road side stand yesterday in search of sweet corn..

  4. Out of the studio and into the field for awhile to plant my hobby farm...

  5. Pulled 25 pieces (all whole, not broken) out of the kiln this morning and was happy to see that they all fired pretty much as expected with some great runs and coloring!

  6. Right now "testing" a set of jewelry racks I made for glazing earrings and pendants, Will know tomorrow how things turned out...

  7. Sometime ago I made a bowl using 5" crown molding to shape the profile and was asked to post the results. Please check my album or look at the images at the bottom of the page for the results with raw and finished glazes.

  8. Started to glaze the bowls but got an order for a dozen medium, tri-tube bud vases too...the first job for the extruder...

Pix of the latest glaze run...the customer bought 13 instead of 10 bowls. 18-54,55 2nd is the same glaze pattern after removal of a defect in each bowl and firing again. All are Amaco PC glazes layered for effects. In some cases Duncan's RG704 Shino Cream was banded to create the white edge runs...

Clever use of glaze: creates visual interest. Well done!

  9. Waiting for my bisque firing of 30+ bowls, jars, cups, sponge holders and jewelry to cool so I can start the glazing processes. Biggest run since Christmas!

  10. Way to go @Hulk! I've enjoyed your insights from that "Pile 'o sand" in southern CA...It doesn't seem like you've been with us for only 4 years!

OK, Min...but below the status update there used to be a set of 5 questions. Has that just been slipped into the totality of questions on the left side of the panel?

It's like you need a miterbox with a fine wire instead of a saw. Would need the clay to be fairly stiff though so it doesn't just squash down. Maybe supporting the tubes with thick foam underneath so the wire could make a clean cut right the way through? (just thinking outloud)

    3. LeeU

      LeeU

Just curious---are you working creamains into the clay body and/or the glazes or are these containers soley to put the ashes in?

    4. JohnnyK

      JohnnyK

I just extruded the tubes last night and I could still work them into the surface, but before I attach the tubes, I'll talk with my friend to find out if he wants the ashes worked into the surface. He was happy with the first jar that I made with the ashes embedded into the surface but changed his mind when he saw the bud vase design and color...so at this point the answer is up in the air...

  14. Wow!!! Just over 1" of rain in the last 18 hours. The first rain we've gotten since the middle of April...a truly welcome sight...and the snow in the high Sierra measured in feet! It's a start!

  15. Yesterday was the last day for the veggie stand this season, so it's time to get back in the studio and start producing for my foray into a local farmer's market this fall as a craftsman...

  16. Bought an 8" Samsung tablet last week but came to the true realization that I have no use for it. It's being returned tomorrow...

Between a smart phone and laptop I would not have a use for one. I can see how for children it would be fun for games.

  20. It's 7AM; 1080 deg F on my first kiln firing in more than 4 years and the first ever ^04 bisque/glaze firing with my new Orton digital controller...The first 2 hours were a real disappointment when i saw the TCL message on the controller. The kiln didn't fire. I had ultimately realized that I hadn't pushed the reset button on the kiln sitter. Pushed the button and the kiln came to life! The firing took 12Hrs 18 min, but only reached 1941 degrees which is about halfway between ^...

I remember that 'forgot to push the reset button' moment too. Such a relief when you realise it's nothing major. Hope all ends well.

Worse than this, today I forgot to put the thermocouple in the peephole (a retrofitted one) & set the kiln for a bisque firing. 2 1/2 hrs later heard error message beeping! It had reached 500oC! Reset programmer thinking it would continue from 500oC without noticing the programmer said it was in the first segment, when actually near end of 2nd one! Spotted this 3 hrs later by which time temp was down to 220oC. Moved program on to 2nd segment and now keeping my fingers crossed...

  21. Just got back from 2 weeks in the Big Apple. I did manage to visit the Clay Arts Center, a gallery and training center in Port Chester, NY and was definitely inspired by some of the work I had seen there, the least of which were simple pinch pots on a windowsill that contained succulents. Looking forward to getting into the studio with the cool, rainy season starting after the long, hot summer here in the Sacramento Valley!

  22. Minor hand surgery tomorrow to fix a "trigger finger". Will be out of the clay for about a month.

  25. Wow! Threw a few mugs last night but had a problem with centering, so I closed my eyes and centered blind. What an experience!

Get a mirror and put it in front of your wheel so you can see yourself. This helps me when centering large amounts of clay.
