  1. Had a long discussion with the math professor from SIU-E about writing math equations for crystalline glaze: she thought it was doable. Interesting!

You do eat it, but only a little over three pieces...

      glazenerd

      Are these three pieces squared?

  2. Ordered technical grade/s of kaolins and one ball clay. Iron content is 0.08 which translates to super white porcelain.

Iron content is a typo I just now seen: should read 0.18%

How much $ per #? I am curious how cheap of stuff we are getting?

  3. Threw some test cylinders from my high translucency formula this morning: much higher plasticity than any stoneware I have tried.

Joseph: now that I have a clay body that is easy to throw- very well TY. I mixed up some of your Sio2 clay this morning.

    3. glazenerd

      glazenerd

Joseph: by the way- the 6.18 COE does not hurt either- much easier to glaze fit.

I imagine so. Good to hear your new clay is rocking.

  4. Finished four chapters, have drawn several charts and graphs. About 35% done! but have most outlines done. Took off Febuary and most of this month, have to go back shortly.

lol.... im gonna start doing this with currie grid tiles cause im about to go make like 15-20 more of them. gonna change their name to glaze cakes, or maybe waffles are more accurate. glaze waffle.

You will figure it out. The cream cheese comment busted me up. I can imagine trying to throw cream cheese. It would be awful.

      Pres

Always thought porcelain was like throwing butter, but cream cheese works too!

  7. So far I am really liking 75-104 utility porcelain. I formulated it to a specific set of limits in lieu of clay varieties. I can nearly pull up a bowl almost perfectly on the first pull. I pulled up a 4" x 10" cylinder with only one pound of clay. Think I will pug out 25 lbs here shortly, interesting properties indeed.

My supplier was out of 75-104 utility porcelain . I bought some 76-106-hope it works as good?

I will be sending out a few trial samples in another two months or so. Currently running shrinkage and absorption tests. Shrinkage at bone dry green ware was only 3 percent.

  8. What is the difference between arrogance and confidence? Arrogance requires a voice, confidence is assured even when silent.

  9. Finished COE graphs, alumina to CEC comparison charts. Okay, so I lead a boring life! It is what we Nerds do.

      Ooo Kaaay.

Still, such a correlation would be nice.  Measure CEC and get a COE as a bonus.

Interesting thought, but sodium, potassium and calcium all exchange at different rates. I do think you could work a loose table off of spars. I have enough data tables, might run that over the winter. My next article is due out in August? I think. The one after that will make your lights go on. <teaser ad>

  10. I spend my mornings drinking coffee and going through the gallery postings. I encourage all members to check out recent postings. The recent work posted by Pugaboo, Giselle, Joseph, 1515Art, and others is really impressive.

They ended up putting in an artificial shoulder joint: she had shattered the bone that badly. The real problem is her continuing to live on her own at 85. She has fallen several times in the last few months, and has always given me " reasons" why. As her POA, I have real concerns about her being by herself.

This is such a difficult place to be. I'm so sorry, Tom. :( She is very fortunate to have a lovely son like you to watch over her. I always tell my son that right now it's my turn to protect and take care of him and one day when I'm older it will be his turn to protect and watch over me.

  13. Just read the most directly applicable journal of clay platelet charges in relation to surface area: filled in the remaining blanks I had. I am a happy man.

Terri: when I did not see cation exchange, EF-FF-EE alignment discussed: pretty much knew it was blather.

  14. Recieved my first commissioned work today. A large tile mural at City Hall depicting city history. The high school art class and local college art class will be involved. I get to mix in my beloved crystalline pieces as well.

  18. Made a slip from my new clay formula and cast my 12 x16 arched tile mold yesterday. Popped it out of the mold and hour later and it is still perfectly flat this afternoon. First time that has happened.

Joseph: so far all I have to do is roll and cut. I do not touch them again until they are bone dry. No turning or weighting- cuts labor way down.

  19. I am finishing chapter 3 on my clay formulation book. Each chapter is running about 4000 words each. I think it will take almost 9-10 chapters to throughly explain the clay codes. Wonder how many could sit through that many chapters on clay?

    1. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

I love reference books. I own 1 fiction book and like 500 reference books. So I could sit through it. = ) But I am probably your direct target market.

I am going to include chapters on diagnosing clay problems. Which will also include a section on analyzing clay specs.trying to assemble an index on all available ball & kaolin clay- some mines do not have much data.

  20. Maybe (just maybe) I have found the magic bulltet: 3 days after throwing, my porcelain test body still had enough moisture left to trim easily.

thats even more impressive since CC usually dries clay faster because it removes humidity.

  22. Ordered 50lbs of commercial grade-refined hectorite today. This is calcium based in lieu of sodium based. According to specs it should be similar to V-gum T: this should be interesting.

  24. I am off until Monday for Thanksgiving. Loaded my 16CF with all the thrown items to be bisq'ed. Threw the breaker- no power! Neighbors pole barn runs off my transformer, they shut it off this morning so he could unprade his power. It is raining, so I guess I will post in the forums all day!
