  1. Lower back has been nagging, trying more rest; cycling, construction and maintenance projects on hold, hence, more chatty on the Forum!

...yesterday, a few careful hours in the Studio went ok, heading out to try that again now.

Treat Your Own Back, by Robin McKensie.

This book did wonders for my lower back, by opening my eyes to what I was doing wrong. Changed some daily habits, and my back has never felt better. It’s an inexpensive book, and a quick read. Highly recommend it!

  2. We closed today!

We have keys and remotes; tomorrow we'll start moving things from storage.

The garage space has one big "two car" door and a one car door.
The one car space will become ...Studio!
My plans include putting up a wall to close off the one car space, with a person door near the back - door with a big window in it, to catch some of the light from that North facing window.
We'll run wiring in the new wall, separate the overhead lighting from the rest of the garage, and add several flat mount LED lights up there.
The heat pump thing will go on that far wall somewhere, the kiln in the corner by the rollup door.

It's a nice space. The window isn't as big as the prior Studio's, but it will bring it a lot of light, being Westerly.
The space is a bit bigger.

The roll about shelving we negotiated for from the sellers.
I'll very likely use a few of them on the Studio side; they are adjustable and very stout.

  3. Sue and I celebrate our 50th anniversary today!

  4. Thank you to all who reached out about how we are doing from the big earthquake. I only lost 5 cereal bowls at my xmas booth and zero breakage at studio. Our home is fine as we are prepared for quakes and have out styff bolted to wall and our water heater and solar tanks are straped to walls. Yes we had stuff fall but it all made it fine. This was my best earthquake as pottery damage was so light. Our house is bolted to foundation as well so its fine to.

Thanks for the report, Mark! Was worried about you but it sounds like you are as prepared as possible.

  5. Kiln arrived yesterday, and is now in the shop. I am in the process of reassembling, and have an electrician coming to do whatever needs done with the wiring into service. I am also getting ready to set the vent into the chimney at back corner.

  6. Hi All y’All…Just wanted to let you know that I’m going in for hand surgery in a couple of hours to fix a trigger finger and maybe another potential problem call Dupuytrens Contracture…I’m expecting all to go well, but may not be at the keyboard for a couple of days and the clay for about a month...we’ll see…

  7. Well,  hot diggity dog--I have received an invite from the Ceramics Art Network's magazine, Ceramics Monthly, to write a short article w/pics for the Quick Tip series. It will be about my simple "works for me" inventory/storage system.

@Gabby they always plan some talks and other special events, but I don’t think I will be part of those. I’ll just be in the exhibit hall with my pots.

  14. Nicest customer at my market today. She invited us to a bbq dinner at her place after the market today. Total sweetheart.

How nice! Pottery customers are maybe the best among the whole retail world. Sometimes I see the types of people buying other things, like high-end jewelry, and I think “thank goodness that person is not in my booth talking about herself for an hour.”

  15. How is everyone? It has been a while. Just wanted to check in and say I love and miss you all! Fired my kiln today. First time in 8 months I have even touched a pot. Made me realize how much I miss this community. Hope everyone's pots are great and their glazes are perfection!

I just finished moving everything into the basement, so it can dry while it continues to rain outside. Happily my next show is indoors! Penn State had exceptionally nice weather, so all things considered summer shows are going well. Congrats on all the orders!

Just got mine back from my accountant. I’m happy to let somebody else be the expert. He told me to make extra estimated payments at the end of last year, so the amounts due now are not too bad.

  21. The aggravating week continues. Now fedex has lost my shipment of custom-printed shopping bags. If they can’t find it, I won’t have time to get them reprinted before my next show.

I’m not quite willing to say “act together” yet for fedex. They had marked the shipment as delivered almost two weeks ago, but the boxes were still somewhere in their system until yesterday. Tried to ask “what’s the story” and so far nobody knows.

They are currently “investigating” whatever that means. If they can’t find the shipment, I will file a claim. The bags are worth $1k so I bet they will try not to pay it. So I’m stressed about the money. Meanwhile, I think I have enough blank bags to get through the show.  It’s not what I planned for, but I can live with blank bags for one more show.

  24. Ack! My kiln with brand new elements just misfired. Now I have to wait until it cools down before I can start to investigate. Aggravation.
