  3. From the album: Kilns

I needed a small raku kiln for experiments. I made this one because I need to take a small kiln for demonstrating some techniques for a teaching video. I had a roll of 8" wide 2" thick ceramic fiber that was a gift from a former student who worked at a refractory supply in Montana. I have had it for almost 15 years. The jacket is made of 16" wide flashing. The fiber is treated with rigidizer to contain the airborne fibers. Will fire it up in the morning to seal it.
  4. leaving in 16 days for pre-conference events, NCECA and then on to Antoinette's for some video shooting. Must pack a lot of things including my not yet built little raku kiln.

  5. My husband was on TV yesterday for the NSF news conference in brownsville, Tx re; the discovery of Gravitational Waves. He works at the Center for Gravitational Waves Astronomy. He is still very excited by the discovery.

  7. Great bird watching in the back yard: Osprey, Anhinga, Egrets, three types of heron, Rosiette Spoonbill, and Ibis, Green-winged Teals, Coots, Cormorants. All this is very distracting but exciting to watch.

Looks super cold up north, below 0 numbers for the upper states. Too cold for me. I am fleeing Georgia and moving further south to Florida at the first chance I get. I can't stand freezing cold. I couldn't imagine being up north.

I've been feeding the birds and getting mostly house sparrows, about 20-50 a day. Also some green jay, cardinals, kisskadees, golden fronted woodpeckers, grackles, morning doves, titmouse. Hoping for some, hummingbirds, warblers and finch soon. I bet you get a lot of Caracara down in your next of south Texas Marcia.

  10. Sprayed the fiber with sodium silicate to keep it from shedding.

    Lid

    From the album: Kilns

The lid before fiber is cut. the wires are bent against the metal to hold tight.
  12. From the album: Kilns

The fiber is 1" thick and 8# density. Painted sodium silicate to the metal interior to adhere the fiber and fastened it where the ends met using the buttons.
  13. From the album: Kilns

the anthill wire is thread through the kiln and then fed through the wall and also on the lid to secure the fiber insulation.

  15. finished two raku kilns yesterday but not the flashing idea. These are oil drum kilns with 1/3 cut off. Also added a burner holder. One is a replacement for my smaller raku kiln and the other is for a friend. the flashing ended up around the grapefruit trees for protection against rates. It seems to be working.

some people like the aesthetic of using a shell with the wadding to enhance the fire mark.
