Welcome to the community challenge #3

This is a place where we can challenge ourselves alongside other community members to create ceramic works within the constraints set out in each challenge.

The Challenge

This challenge is to make 'anything but round'
Try to be creative with your research and how you translate that into an idea for your ceramic work.

The Rules

  • Everybody can enter the challenge, all you need is a registered account on the forum.
  • Work in progress (WIP) images are encouraged. It can help to talk through your research and ideas but please don't spam the topic. Keep the updates informative and succinct.
  • One final entry per community member, images no larger than 1024 pixels wide/high.
  • Attach images to your final entry post along with the text Final Entry - Forum Name
  • This will make sure you are not missed out of the results thread. Also make sure you post your final entry in this thread to be entered into the challenge.
  • The challenge will run quarterly and will be
    • 1st February to 29th April,
    • 1st May to 30st July,
    • 1st August to 30st October,
    • 1st November to 30st January.
  • The results thread will be posted on the last day of the ending month. It will be a collection of all the entries into one post for condensed viewing and some post challenge discussion.
  •

The Rest
Remember you are entering for your own enjoyment and there could be a risk that your work develops into something new and exciting.
Be considerate of others and don't post opinions without good reasons to back them up. We are all here to improve and progress with our ceramics.
Some dates may vary slightly as this is a community run project and it will depend on members having access to the forum.

Have any ideas for a challenge? Post them in the ideas thread http://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/7794-submit-your-challenge-ideas/

at the show today, my friend denise had a wonderfully whimsical pink pig bank with long legs.  she had a band of various color flowers around her waist (waste on a pig) and was wearing what you would think was a tutu.  except she was so fat i told people she was wearing a fourfour.  numbers are all relative.  just not relatives of mine.

it was a    s  l  o   w  day. -_-   fell asleep in the chair.

I am new here but have been lurking for a while. I have just set up my pottery within the last couple of months. I have been playing with doing chopstick boxes. I have been thinking about trying to see if I can do them altered to a square shape. I do not know if it will work but I am going to give it a go to see if I can get the lids to work on non-round shapes.

Edit:

I think I will do this as a series of three.. One will be square, one triangular shape and one... well I will figure that out later. I went out this morning and threw one that I shaped into a rounded edge square. I have some ideas on how to push the square idea more but that will have to wait til tomorrow when I have more time.

Mistfit: Check out this video, the item has the shape you want but he achieves it a different way.

Yes any technique is fine for this one :D The challenges are probably going to oscillate between something quite open with little constrains to something much more specific. Always open to more ideas.

Loving the idea of the chopstick boxes Misfit. The lid style reminds me a lot of those bamboo steamers.

I like the idea of a box for this challenge. I was thinking some type of altered vase, but a box sounds like more fun. Maybe even a tall jar, altered with a lid. I am going to try to join in on this challenge. I missed the other two because I was working hard on trying to get ready to sell pots, but I am still a ways from that, so might as well enjoy this challenge.

I have not been a-round much lately...but I'm certain that is not the intent of this challenge. It 'tis off to the sketchpad for this one...perhaps venturing into the world of wood and clay construction.  I've needed an excuse to get beyond the "I'll get around to it" stage...and this squarely fits the bill :)

Maybe @Mark (Marko) Madrazo will pass the hat when he gets his inspiration,

  • 5 weeks later...

After a few hit and miss attempts I landed on a three sided shape for my box. I am still not 100% happy with it but it is getting closer. If I really wanted to make a bunch of these it would take more practice. Currently I need more practice on the easier thing, but this has been a fun diversion.
