Had a long discussion with the math professor from SIU-E about writing math equations for crystalline glaze: she thought it was doable. Interesting!

You do eat it, but only a little over three pieces...
-
Are these three pieces squared?
-
Naturally...

Finished four chapters, have drawn several charts and graphs. About 35% done! but have most outlines done. Took off Febuary and most of this month, have to go back shortly.

Great project...good for you! That will be a fine and useful addition to the literature for ceramics.
-
you are well on your way to becoming the new go-to source for everything ceramic!
-
Somehow the address of my rabbit hole has leaked out.
-
Spent the last few days writing a clay chemistry specific "glossary of terms." If someone would be kind enough to stop by an uncross my eyes, much appreciated.

Tom, don't you have an editor really close by, isn't your wife in the publishing business?
-
Correct Min. All the more reason I found the unsolicited offers to help most generous. Some technical review will still be required.
-
Gotcha. Yes, potters have to be some of the most kind and generous people I know!
-
Off for awhile now. So I am going to read a book written long ago by one of the foremost slip chemist.
-
what book by what chemist?

Fine Ceramics, Technology and Applications: F.H. Norton 1970
West, Lawrence, and Johnson worked on the "water hull" concept, sometimes referred to as the "solvated layer." The basis of modern slip principles.

Horton introduced the "stretched membrane" theory of plasticity in 1948

Finished COE graphs, alumina to CEC comparison charts. Okay, so I lead a boring life! It is what we Nerds do.

LT: think you misread my post. The COE is one graph, and CEC/ alumina is a separate graph.
-
Ooo Kaaay.
Still, such a correlation would be nice. Measure CEC and get a COE as a bonus.

Interesting thought, but sodium, potassium and calcium all exchange at different rates. I do think you could work a loose table off of spars. I have enough data tables, might run that over the winter. My next article is due out in August? I think. The one after that will make your lights go on. <teaser ad>

Well, it is Christmas Day. Had family in Jordan and South Korea finishing their Masters. Between that and passing the flu around for months: today is Christmas.
-
Mixed/pugged 200 lbs of C6 porcelain with oxide additions specifically for crystalline glaze. Curious to see if adding crystal enhancers in the clay produce larger crystals.
-
Made a dozen bloat burgers today. Going to test specific reactions and limits.

You eat those with relish ??
-
I relish the thought!

Finished chapter three, now on to testing "iron" limits. Then the effects of sulfides and carbons: and their limits.

Please do. Given the time period, a brave undertaking on your part. No programmable controllers in 73. The only thing I remember from 73 is Pink Floyd playing in St.Louis.
-
I wish I could have heard pink floyd in st louis!
-
Ha! I saw them in 69 at Connie mac stadium in Phila. in a thunder /lightning storm. very cool.
-
I have been waiting for six months to see these results. Well worth the wait.

Getting away from clay is needful as well. The potter's passion for clay is a consuming fire at times. Gets really intense when you get on the path of a new glaze, form, or technique.
-
Keep experimenting, watching with interest.
-
Thanks Tom, I've never put much effort into my glazes mostly going with what was available and trying to make it work, sometimes with success and sometimes not so much. I can do pretty much with the clay as I wish I think, I'm a novice working with glaze chemistry and my experiments salvage jobs at best. Not that they don't work...the end result of the combination of glaze, and firings winds up being to complex to depend on. So the search for bright colors I like continues my last c6 celadon was disappointing , my own fault doing little bits here and there with ceramics I need to focus.
I'm in the north Nevada desert now finding everything but gold, tacks, bird shot, nails, bullets...did I say bullets lots of bullets and shells, tiny tiny bits of rust up to big old pieces of tin...spent the better part of today finding and replacing one of my tires that turned into something resembling a birds nest, the Nevada desert hates tires you see their shredded remains everywhere out here.

Yellow with black lines foil saggar works for me. Nice effects.

Finally put twelve pounds on the wheel, my first time over 5-6 lbs. my final conclusion was: I would rather make clay than throw it. Turned out - so so.
-
Mixed up a porcelain and stoneware body with the high iron clay from the old brick yard. Already fired 100 gram samples, now for the 1000 gram samples. For some odd reason I sprinkled some 50 mesh grog in: get out of my head John.

First pugmill being delivered Friday, another one at the end of September. Now to find a straight mixer.

Guess I have to wait another week, the delivery truck broke down yesterday.

Sitting out back, five feet from the hummingbird feeder, watching four of them fight over it. Amazing little creatures.

Have had two get stuck in my garage ... takes some doing to get them out!
-
I had that happen also, we tried everything even ran down to the store and bought a feeder and put sugar water in it. They finally left when it was lighter outside than in the garage.

Have 3 cone 04 experimental colored porcelain cooking, pictures later tomorrow.

Like I said, need to test several 04 glaze recipes.

lol.
-
Joseph, got so involved in developing the clay, sorta forgot the glaze.

Up in the wee hours as usual: have to take mom in for surgery this morning.

me, too.

They ended up putting in an artificial shoulder joint: she had shattered the bone that badly. The real problem is her continuing to live on her own at 85. She has fallen several times in the last few months, and has always given me " reasons" why. As her POA, I have real concerns about her being by herself.
-
This is such a difficult place to be. I'm so sorry, Tom. She is very fortunate to have a lovely son like you to watch over her. I always tell my son that right now it's my turn to protect and take care of him and one day when I'm older it will be his turn to protect and watch over me.

After nearly two years of testing and writing formula limits: threw my final stoneware recipe this morning. Finally satisfied with the results.

Ty Giselle, Joseph, Ron.

Oh dear! On a positive note she has family to help.

Just threw a cone 04 porcelain frit ware piece: talk about throwing cream cheese.
- Show previous comments 2 more
-
You will figure it out. The cream cheese comment busted me up. I can imagine trying to throw cream cheese. It would be awful.
-
Always thought porcelain was like throwing butter, but cream cheese works too!
-
Well, I finally managed to throw a form over the 12" tall mark. Managed to do it without it wobbling and spiraling. Just think, in another two years I might actually be good at throwing.

eight isn't everything. But congrats on your height in this case. Well done. through sheer determination!

Marcie: I am not only testing my ability, but also testing the ability of the clay.
-
I am finishing chapter 3 on my clay formulation book. Each chapter is running about 4000 words each. I think it will take almost 9-10 chapters to throughly explain the clay codes. Wonder how many could sit through that many chapters on clay?
-
I love reference books. I own 1 fiction book and like 500 reference books. So I could sit through it. = ) But I am probably your direct target market.
-
me too!
-
I am going to include chapters on diagnosing clay problems. Which will also include a section on analyzing clay specs.trying to assemble an index on all available ball & kaolin clay- some mines do not have much data.
