  1. Over this past weekend I had a conversation with a woman who’s dad has mild dementia. It was at a sale I was doing and she literally jumped when she saw my porcelain polar bears. They are just little standing bears, nothing spectacular. She told me her dad and her have gone on yearly vacations since her mum passed away a few years back. In the spring she is taking him to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat where they care for orphaned or injured bears. She said he has always loved polar bears but with his dementia his memory is slipping so she bought him a bear to put beside his bed to remind him of the trip they will be taking. Thought it was really touching and appreciated that she took the time to tell me the story even though it made her cry.

Thanks Gabby. To be honest I felt humbled with her reaction, wish I had just given her the bear though.

it's definitely a long grieving process - glad the bear helped a bit- maybe for both of them :)  Going thru this myself now with my Mom.  We bring Italian cold cuts, cheeses & olives  & sourdough bread - stuff they don't serve at her care home.

I'm sorry to hear that Terri. Not a pleasant part of the ageing process for so many people or their families. It's wonderful your Mom has a caring, thoughtful daughter.

  2. Away for a few days, cabin up the coast, wifi can be spotty where I'm going.

Just got mine back from my accountant. I’m happy to let somebody else be the expert. He told me to make extra estimated payments at the end of last year, so the amounts due now are not too bad.

  4. Gas prices are crazy here, $1.57 / litre, works out to $5.97 a US gallon. Expected to go up again later in the week. Glad I don't have to drive to work!!!

Up to 158.9 overnight (regular gas). My daughter just bought a Chevy Volt electric car, expensive vehicle but she doesn't have the $80 plus fill ups anymore.

Ours has been creeping up. Got over $3 a gallon this week. Hasn't been that high in a long time.

$3 a gallon? Crazy cheap!!!! I just did a stats search, have to go back to Feb 2003 for our price/litre to be the equivalent of that.

  5. Gas prices are now  2.09 Litre for regular, whoohoo, we have the highest gas prices in North America. (7.90 CA dollars per US gallon)

Luckily, no.  But our petrol prices have always been higher than your gas.

When we rented a truck camper from Calgary, we were a bit aghast at the engine size/fuel consumption, but then found out price was a quarter/third of UK price.

@Chilly I had a cousin from Germany come to visit back in 2000. She wanted to pay for a tank of gas in my 4 cylinder hatchback, because it was the least she’d ever seen gas priced at. It was a bit of a gas war, and the price was only (CAD) 45 cents a litre at the time. I think it’s $1.60ish now.

My sister acts the same way when she visits me.   The gas in Kansas can be half of what she pays in California.  Denice

  6. Going camping for a few days.

  7. Gray skies from clouds so much better than from smoke. Happy to have the rain!

The smoke it moving out of our area this week,  I finally got to see the sun setting in the smoky sky last night.  Pink sun with grey skies made me feel like I was in a Star Wars Movie.     Denice

  8. I put a huge bowl of water out at the edge of our driveway during the summer for dogs out for a walk. Went to change the water just now and somebody has stolen the bowl. Hmmm, back to using a bucket rather than one of my bowls.

Part of me wants to put another bowl out. I would like my faith in human decency restored, and yet I need to be realistic.

    4. DirtRoads

      DirtRoads

Maybe put out a piece with a small defect?    Try it again.   On the outside chance, the bowl was empty and whoever got it just thought it was being discarded?   I make a lot of little signs on slabs around  and use around my retail store.   Maybe put a little stone sign out there  "Fur Babies" Only!  Or something like that.

I usually give people another chance.   Although, it rarely works out.

  9. Nicest customer at my market today. She invited us to a bbq dinner at her place after the market today. Total sweetheart.

How nice! Pottery customers are maybe the best among the whole retail world. Sometimes I see the types of people buying other things, like high-end jewelry, and I think “thank goodness that person is not in my booth talking about herself for an hour.”

Couldn't make Anacortes this year, hope to get down there next year. (maybe with Laura) We passed on the bbq, we have an old dog at home and needed to get back before he had an accident. The invitation warmed my heart, nice to be reminded  there are still very kind people in the world.

  17. Hi Lou, this is the info I saw: I teach a clay class at McDaniel College , Westminster Maryland . We haven't used our Walker Pugmill in many years. It is in good shape. maybe a couple blades are bend but it runs and is ready to work. But I could not allow young students to operate it. All safety's are there but !!! I am thinking 1000.00 Ken Hankins, Shiloh Pottery . 410-239-8888 Seeya, Min

Market was okay but not brilliant. Think customers had more sense than I did and stayed indoors with the ac on. We don't usually get this hot so not acclimatized to it at all, especially in June.
