I know lots of people who get new shoes for an old outfit, then use the new shoes as a reason for a new outfit...works for me

I love old shoes, they fit and feel so much better. I wish there was somebody who could buy me a kiln for Christmas but that takes out a lot of the journey. I am only half in it for the end results.

  5. Making pots, it's a mugs game.

I tried pulled, slab, and coil handles. Now I make a tapered coil, flatten it slightly with a roller, and attach that.

just unloaded 32 today. Clean and glaze tomorrow.

  6. Nearing the end of my glaze explorations. By mid December I will have a few working glazes. Got a good few sat in vinegar for the next day or so.

  7. 260 pots glazes today, firing an untested glaze on all of them. Flying by the seat of my pants.

      GiselleNo5

Is there any other way to do it?

      Yeh me too, can't wait..

  9. Took the gas kiln over to where it is being fired. Need a few more pots and then I am read for a test fire :D :D :D

  10. Drove 60 miles to pick up some Wollastonite, could not get rid off bubbles from Whiting or Dolomite. Be funny if I open the kiln and there are still bubbles >;(

    1. Marcia Selsor

      Marcia Selsor

not sure how bad your bubbles are, but I sometimes squirt diluted alcohol which breaks the surface tension of the bubbles...at least the ones floating on top. I learning this from plaster mixing with Richard Notkin who learned it from professional mold makers. It does not have any effect on the glazes.

    2. High Bridge Pottery

      High Bridge Pottery

Thanks for the tip Marcia but this isn't to do with application issues. Will try it next time I am making plaster moulds :D My problem is with the LOI leaving bubbles in my fired glaze.

    3. Min

when i sub wollastonite for whiting/silica the glazes flux more when the formulas are balanced. i need to slightly undersupply the calcium part of the original formula.

  11. Having a dabble into changing firing schedules to get rid of bubbles. Tried a slow cool with no luck, still just as many. Tried a hold at 900c for 20 mins after reading that is the temp dolomite and whiting have finished gassing. Excited to see if that has made any changes.

      High Bridge Pottery

That's what I was trying with the hold at 900c. Didn't seem to make much difference. Going to put a ball of glaze in my bisque and see if it has already started melting.

    3. Min

      Min

Can you get wollastonite where you live? Since whiting has approx 45% loi lots of gassing out that has caused problems with some of my glazes before i rejigged recipes. doesn't always work but sometimes it did the trick.

    4. High Bridge Pottery

      High Bridge Pottery

If I can't solve the problem I will have to buy some wollastonite. Just been trying to use what I have in the stores.

  12. Burner has arrived :D one step closer to gas firing!

  13. Working night shift with the super moon eclipse. Should be great viewing with the clear sky up the north of England.

Oh no :( it was such a good experience. Made it seem like much more of a rock in the sky without it being so bright. A lot less red in real life than the close up photos seem to show.

  14. Waiting on a quote for LPG burner. Gas firing in the near future :D

Yea :D managed to convince my parents to let me use their garden but on the condition that I bought the burner instead of trying to make one.

  15. Making myself a melt fluidity mould, always make just enough plaster... Little on the thin side at the bottom

The deeper I go the more questions I find ;] Really enjoying all the chemistry and melting of materials to see what happens.

  16. Found 500 or so kiln bricks for sale. Don't think the seller cares how much they get, hopefully I can grab a bargain for under £100

Haven't won the bid yet. If it goes over 100 it's probably not worth the 200 mile round trip.

  17. Anybody know how complicated it could be converting a pug mill from three phase to single phase? Found a cheap one

    1. Chilly

      Chilly

Spend another £90 on a converter or £xx on a new motor. Or wait for a single phase one to come along.....

  19. Thermocouple chip collected and wired up with an old thermocouple. I hope this one is a type K. Can't see to find any markings.

It's amazing how easy the stuff works. Spent very little cash and I have a computer reading temperature from the thermocouple. Now the hard part is doing something useful with the data. If I knew how to do it you could make a 13A 240v kiln for like £200

    4. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

I was thinking about that myself. I need a small test kiln, and it would be really neat to program it all and build it myself. Not sure if it would be worth the effort but it would be a cool project.

  20. Somebody today asked me why I keep making tall drinking vessels. I said, you know me :D

  21. Been on holiday in Rhodes since wednesday. Beautiful place, interesting time to be in Greece. People have no idea what is going to happen.

Hot is hot. My garage is only 97. Easy Peasy!

    2. High Bridge Pottery

      High Bridge Pottery

Oh man that is hot, I don't think it gets much over 80 in here. Three big windows I can open and extraction unit. Doesn't really help when you have to scrape tile adhesive off the wall.

  23. Day started 15 hours ago, another 6 or so to go before I can nap.

  24. Kiln at 200 degC Sitting here hoping my very picky glaze has worked out and I have some good tests :D Think that could be asking too much...
