Got my 2 new raku kilns sprayed with rigidizer. Now they just need the kiln shed finished to get them protected from the weather. Last year it snowed -22" around Sept. 15th. First frost ( its late this year) is expected next weekend. Happy to have those kilns out of the studio. I now have 3 raku kilns outside the dining room patio door. It makes it easy to read the pyrometer.

Concrete slab getting poured on Monday. Walls will follow shortly. This will be my new kiln shed for year-round firing ability ...as long as I can shovel my way out there!

I do not envy those, in the Northern US, and obviously places North of that.
We get a decent amount of snow here, but nothing like that. I got my current snow blower at the end of a record setting Winter, in terms of snowfall.
So I did my driveway, by hand all season, then got the snow blower. We haven't had a season like that since...

How is everyone? It has been a while. Just wanted to check in and say I love and miss you all! Fired my kiln today. First time in 8 months I have even touched a pot. Made me realize how much I miss this community. Hope everyone's pots are great and their glazes are perfection!

Sad to hear that the world of ceramics is not exempt from it predators . Have a look at @softearth.ceramics on instagram to read about her tragic experience being a potter's apprentice in Copenhagen

Mark I was wondering if you had ever used the Wonderbat system. I tried it out today, and it didn't want to stay seated in the opening, kept moving up and down. This is my first time throwing in about 2 years and I have never thrown much on a electric wheel. The next pot I got out a regular bat and didn't have any problems centering it. Does the square need some clay underneath it? The wheel I got off of E-Bay came with two sets, it would be a shame not to use them. By the way I sold my kickwheel so we were able to set up the Brent this weekend. I also bought a 3 cu. ft. Blue Diamond kiln, I paid $250 for it. It has a manufacture date of 1969 on it but has never been used, it also came with $100 worth of shelves and stilts. My small Paragon finally bit the dust, it is around the same age but it is well used. I like having a kiln that size for special jobs. Denice

The aggravating week continues. Now fedex has lost my shipment of custom-printed shopping bags. If they can’t find it, I won’t have time to get them reprinted before my next show.

"Investigating" huh? Not paying to replace them doesn't really seem like an option. The vendor handed the product off to the carrier. The carrier hands them to the customer. While they are in the possession of the carrier, they are that group's responsibility. It's not as if they were delivered, and somebody stole them, or they were damaged, while sitting at your house.
If they give you too much grief, I would threaten to never use them as a carrier again, either personally, or with any company who uses them. If that doesn't yield any results, I would put pressure on the company, who made the bags. Tell them, that you like giving them your business, but you can't do so, if they are using FedEx. They might not listen to an individual with a small business, but they might to a larger one, with more clients and more shipping.
I don't know if I would put too much faith in them though. This is the same company that lost Tom Hanks for several years...

So I'm buying a kiln. Probably a Skutt from Georgie's. How do you like them bananas?
-
A very worthwhile, and rewarding, purchase. Congrats!
I like Skutt, and they do their job. If I had money to spare, I'd probably go for a L&L. But then I'd also go for a Thomas Stuart wheel, a wall mounted clay extruder, a slab roller a...
My first classroom kiln was a Skutt, computer controlled. It worked well, but it seemed to burn through elements quickly, and that was at Cone 04 max. I was a that District for six years. The elements had went bad twice, in that time.
My second District, used two Skutts, with kiln sitters and a back up timer. They worked great.
My kiln at home is a Skutt, with just the sitter.
My current classroom kiln is a L&L, computer controlled, and I can't think of anything bad to say about it. It fires spot on every time. The computer controlled Skutt I used previously, I would occasionally have some glazes that didn't quite mature, leaving bubbles, that didn't have time to smooth out. I will say, the height of the kiln, with the stand, requires me to stand, on the stand, to reach the bottom. Obviously that means, that I have plenty of space for student projects, but it also means, that I have to hang over the edge to load some projects...
Regardless of what you get, I have no doubt you will be happy with your purchase.

I am missing the moderators and key resource/info people who are (recently) not here anymore---the place just ain't the same.

Wow, where have I been? I had no idea that John was no longer participating here.
That is unfortunate, especially if it was because of conflict/ disagreement with other posters.
I have seen too many posters leave, for such reasons.
I have never taken anything, people have said here, personal. If my views are questioned, I either further explain myself, or rethink my stance. I am not the authority, that some former and current members are, so I have less to lose in a debate, but I am still always open to a health discussion. If it turns negative, I just walk away... That's exactly what I preach to my students, so I have to lead by example right?

fired a few more saggar pieces yesterday. Waiting for the snow to return. The accumulated snow in the north yard ranges from 1 ft. to 3 ft. but the patio is clear and where I have my kiln right now. It is nice to be able to watch the pyrometer while cooking dinner.

We have close relatives who are evacuated now and do not know whether they still have a house standing. Its very bad scene now as the fires move around with the big winds.

I swear, I have a half track mind. Saw an ad for a local poetry slam, and read pottery slam. My first thought was "that could be an entertaining fundraiser."
