  1. Last pottery class this week, got my raku back, meh. Folks felt such a connection someone suggested we meet again next wk to pick up and glaze our final works outside of class time. I have some stoneware left to glaze. Maybe I'll finally make/get a successful mug with my own hands.

  2. Think I finally convinced myself to write a book on clay formulation and remedies for common clay issues. Should not take me more than five years.

  3. Anybody ever had their instagram account follow a load of random people? Mine has about 300 new follows that were not me, I don't think I have used anything dubious with instagram, no third party apps.

I have had unauthorized login attempts to both my personal and professional Instagram accounts in the past week. Both were from Asia (One China, the other Indonesia). I was alerted, and changed my password(s). They are probably trying to gain new spamming accounts.

  4. SPRING WHERE YOU GO!? Just when I start enjoying spring and have my garage door open, a cold front comes in and I am back in the house hiding from my freezing studio and achy bones!

We had the Tornado Sirens go off last Monday. Today, we had several of inches of snow on the ground.

  5. I will be gathering quite a few of these: https://goo.gl/images/NGXZn7. Think they would be good for small amounts of glaze materials? They even come with their own scoops.

Had quite a bit of time in the hospital. On the plus side, I came up with a few pages of concept sketches for wares.

Yeah, I used to buy that stuff years ago, when I was exercising more. It worked better, when mixed with water as opposed to milk, but tasted terrible when doing so.

  8. I have a dipping glaze for my classroom, but want to have a small bottle, do the students can brush it on as well. What should I add to the small bottle? Epsom Salts to keep it suspended? Gum solution so it dries slower?

Thanks for the responses all. I went with a little bit of Epsom salt and gum solution. Initial test went well. Brushed on pretty evenly. I may have to tinker a bit more, but it's a start.

  9. Happy New Year clay friends and associates!

  10. enjoying the peaceful snowfall outside while sitting by the fireplace in a camping chair. Furniture should come tomorrow with the bulk of my studio.

  11. Fired a class load last week. Had a larger student sculpture that had been drying for weeks. Had a slow bisque fire program. Everything was going well, until the kiln got around 1000 F. Felt steam coming out of the peep... It was like the engine room scene from Titanic. FULL STOP!!!

  12. I hate winter, it's dark by 16:30...

I'm still trying to get things done outside. By the time I get home from work, the light is already dwindling.

  13. Random thought, what would happen, if a Raku piece were put in a container of cooking oil as a means of reduction?...

Yeah, not dangerous, but also not worth the time. I thought the oil would burn, and give some nice carbon effects. It really didn't. And since the glaze went from the oxidation of the kiln, to an environment that provided neither oxygen or carbon, the glaze didn't really change. It doesn't look bad, just nothing amazing.

I did a firing last night, and gave it a shot, with some pre-testing and precautions. It was SPECTACULAR-ly disappointing... The oil barely burned. Definitely no explosions and sizzled like bacon hitting a hot skillet. No real splatter to speak of. I've had worse from throwing frozen veggies into a skillet.

I use tongs Marcia. Even at the temp of a Raku ware coming out of a kiln, would oil explode? I tends to just burn doesn't it? Don't metal workers quench their work in oil?

  16. After two hours of practice throwing this morning: I need to post in the "Help, I cannot center," and the "Help, I cannot pull walls, and the " Why in the he** did I buy a wheel anyway" threads.

Yeah, I've been doing this for fifteen years, and I still run into issues. And many times, it isn't me, but the clay. I use a clay that is far too stiff. You'd think I'd learn, but yet...

Best of luck in your endeavor. You'll ge there.

  17. Did a Raku firing last night with some test tiles for my Art Club firing this week. Also used a pumpkin as a reduction chamber for a ceramic pumpkin... Yes, clever I know...

  20. xmas production is going thru 400-500#s of clay per week now

  21. Got some cement board, to replace the canvases in my classroom. Good Lord is that stuff heavy!

  22. Keep finding treasures from the bookshelves. I am keeping favorites. Got rid of some studio junk yesterday. Today I am tossing the old hurricane plywood.

  23. I was pouring glaze over the outside of some little tumblers the other day. I used a small sour cream container lid to shield the bottom from glaze. Worked pretty well.

  24. They accepted our offer on the red Lodge house so we're moving' back to Montana! So excited. We'll probably begin the move with studio equipment and then start showing our house. Should be moving by the Spring.YAY!
