  1. Spent the last couple days getting clay "kits" ready for students to take home.  We had to go to Online Learning a week ago, and will continue at least past the Thanksgiving Holiday.  I wedged the entire contents of our reclaim bin (650 lbs. or so), for the kits.  We have so much surplus clay, I didn't want to add to that by giving them the boxed clay.

  2. Finally got power back on this morning, after 8-1/2 days without due to the "derecho" that hit last Monday.

I guess the bright side is it's summer and you didn't have to deal with freezing temperatures plus a power outage plus a pandemic.

      Denice,

Little to no damage to our home or garage to speak of.  We lost half of our front tree, which is our only tree, and it kind of fell on our front porch.  However, it just managed to dent part of the gutter.

We also lost a single shingle.

This definitely gave us confidence in the strength and durability of our Century old home!

I was a decorator for 20 years and potted on weekends and evenings.   I had one of my regular customer's new home wiped off the face of the earth,  her old home was next door and it just  got shifted off the foundation.  It was still a loss but they didn't lose everything in the home.    We bought a 100 years old house shortly after the wind damage we had.   We lived there for 13 years and had four tornadoes pass over our house.   Usually  the corners of our house would get broken off,  we had one tornado that hit a school and shopping center near us.   It dropped part of the shopping center roof in our back yard,  we were very lucky.    My husband was in the shower on the third floor when it passed over he came running down the stairs naked hollering about the tornado.   For some reason the tornado sirens didn't go off.  We had to move because of my MS,  we built our new house to be solid and of course a basement.     Denice

  3. Does anyone else not like their handles during the making and attachment process, but then really like how they look once they've set up a bit?

    1. JohnnyK

      JohnnyK

I find doing handles a real pain so I only do them occasionally and even then, most of the time, they are just OK...

    2. Denice

      Denice

I also struggle to get the right look and fit to the hand when I make handles.   Once they are glazed and fired I realize that they are just what I was trying to do.  Denice

  4. Finally got a new splash pan, for my classroom Shimpo RK-2.  The old yellow one, has probably been on there, since the Carter Administration.  It had been cracked, since I started in the District, and I have been meaning to replace it.  Finally, last year a bat flew off, and shatter one of the sides.  So that forced my hand.

The wheel head *really* didn't want to come off.  I actually had to remove the entire axle, just to get leverage, from the underside of the wheel head, to remove it.  Half a can of "Liquid Wrench" didn't really help, until that point.

Now, I just have to remove as much as possible, from the frame, so I can remove the rust and old paint, and give it a fresh coat.

  5. Cleaned my studio/ workshop Sunday.  My workbench was overflowing with materials from numerous projects, not just clay work, but home improvement projects, my daughter's school project, etc.

Oddly enough, there wasn't a lot of clay scraps and residue, but a ridiculous amount of cat hair, from a certain feline, who thinks she owns the place...

Cleaned mine also but I had to finish it up yesterday,  red clay everywhere.   Denice

  6. Heads up, to anyone looking for a kiln on the East Coast.  Govdeal.com  has a good looking Skutt, with a digital controller.  The bids are currently low, and will likely jump, but worth looking into.  I nearly got a kiln off the same site, a couple years ago, for between 3-400.  I lost it last second.

There is also one listed on the same site, that is about an hour away from me.  It is listed as "Not working", but might be worth it for me pursue.  It does look as if there is some damage to the bottom bricks, possible an extreme glaze mess!

  7. Started off by getting my wheels down from their storage spot. Then it went to giving them a good scrubbing. It quickly became me taking them apart, to really scrub off the decades of build up and lubricate the necessary parts...

    1. glazenerd

      glazenerd

How much an hour does scrubbing go for? I have about 20 hours worth. Send applications to: nerdsstudiopigpen.com

  8. Getting my classroom set up, and turned over my Shimpo RK wheel. The inner workings are spotless! The outside has a bit of wear and tear, appropriate for its age, but the inside looks new. Wasn't expecting that!

  9. Loading a packed kiln full of beginning student sculptures, is like putting an egg, full of nitroglycerin, into a bin full of more of those exact same explosive eggs. One wrong move and everything goes...

End of year firing were always fun. Especially those that had mixed loads of bisque and glaze when firing ^06.

    3. glazenerd

      glazenerd

Perhaps an extended candling to insure dryness?

    4. Pres

      Pres

glazenerd, that goes without saying when you teach ceramics to kids. Heavy thick walled areas is not unusual, no matter how hard you try to get them to understand the problems with overweight poorly constructed ware.

  10. I will be gathering quite a few of these: https://goo.gl/images/NGXZn7. Think they would be good for small amounts of glaze materials? They even come with their own scoops.

Had quite a bit of time in the hospital. On the plus side, I came up with a few pages of concept sketches for wares.

  11. I have a dipping glaze for my classroom, but want to have a small bottle, do the students can brush it on as well. What should I add to the small bottle? Epsom Salts to keep it suspended? Gum solution so it dries slower?

Takes a lot of CMC, so I make my own.

    4. Benzine

      Benzine

Thanks for the responses all. I went with a little bit of Epsom salt and gum solution. Initial test went well. Brushed on pretty evenly. I may have to tinker a bit more, but it's a start.

  12. Fired a class load last week. Had a larger student sculpture that had been drying for weeks. Had a slow bisque fire program. Everything was going well, until the kiln got around 1000 F. Felt steam coming out of the peep... It was like the engine room scene from Titanic. FULL STOP!!!

Scotty would have pushed her to Warp 12 and held on for dear life.

    3. Benzine

      Benzine

Yep, it survived. After shutting off the kiln, I kept checking the peep for moisture. When none was detectable, I started it back up. No issues. There were no spots over 1/2" thick.

    4. Pres

      Pres

Good job on the steam check. I always use the hand at the peep hole to check for moisture during bisque, and glaze firings.

  13. Random thought, what would happen, if a Raku piece were put in a container of cooking oil as a means of reduction?...

I did a firing last night, and gave it a shot, with some pre-testing and precautions. It was SPECTACULAR-ly disappointing... The oil barely burned. Definitely no explosions and sizzled like bacon hitting a hot skillet. No real splatter to speak of. I've had worse from throwing frozen veggies into a skillet.

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

LOL Well that's good to know!!

    4. Benzine

      Benzine

Yeah, not dangerous, but also not worth the time. I thought the oil would burn, and give some nice carbon effects. It really didn't. And since the glaze went from the oxidation of the kiln, to an environment that provided neither oxygen or carbon, the glaze didn't really change. It doesn't look bad, just nothing amazing.

  14. Did a Raku firing last night with some test tiles for my Art Club firing this week. Also used a pumpkin as a reduction chamber for a ceramic pumpkin... Yes, clever I know...

Babs, I tried something similar a couple years ago, but scooped out the "guts" first, and dried the pumpkin a bit. Some interesting results. This time, I just cut the top off the pumpkin, and put the hot ware directly into the pumpkin guts, seeds and all. The pumpkin top seals nicely to keep the air out. Pretty interesting result. I'll post photos later.

  15. Got some cement board, to replace the canvases in my classroom. Good Lord is that stuff heavy!

I am attaching shelf liner to the backs, so they don't skid, and so that the students only know to use on side. Hopefully they work as well as I plan...

    3. glazenerd

      glazenerd

I used a few stainless screws to set mine: just enough to hold it it place.

  16. I was pouring glaze over the outside of some little tumblers the other day. I used a small sour cream container lid to shield the bottom from glaze. Worked pretty well.

    1. Roberta12

      Roberta12

did you simply place the lid over the bottom of the tumbler? Then pour?

    2. Benzine

      Benzine

Yes indeed. I didn't want to bother waxing them, or spend the time wiping off the excess. I saw a lid sitting there, and I gave it a shot. If I wanted the end of the glaze to be further up, I would scoot the lid further to the side I was pouring on.

    3. Callie Beller Diesel

      Callie Beller Diesel

Why not just dip upside down? Were you using a different liner glaze?

  17. Did a Raku firing with my departing Art Club Seniors. For reduction, we used their old notes, papers and tests. Fun was had, minus the heat and humidity...

    1. Marcia Selsor

      Marcia Selsor

I need to bisque and raku fire but the heat is forbidding.

    2. Benzine

      Benzine

Yeah, your heat is definitely worse that it is here. Walking outside yesterday, was like jumping into a pool. Instantly drenched.

  18. Came across a video on YouTube of a "Ceramics Throw Down" show on the BBC. Here's hoping they bring that one to the US too. Link for those interested:

  19. For anyone in the Tennessee area, there is a Walker pugmill on Govdeals.com for sale.

  20. So I was looking to make some "Score No More", and it call for dry gum powder. Will CMC Gum, or Veegum work?

    1. Babs

      Babs

so Benzine is score no more different from the magic water?

    2. Babs

      Babs

The gum in the recipe by Old Lady is Gum Arabic, can't see why CMC won't work

    3. Benzine

      Benzine

Babs. Score No More is Gum, Custer Feldspar and the clay body. So it's more of modified slip. Whereas the magic water is mainly water with the soda ash and sodium silicate.

Joseph, so you would not recommend it since it's difficult to sharpen? (i was thinking of ordering one)

  22. Went to an online site to buy some materials for "Magic Mud", ended up splurging on a Mudtool sponge and Do All Trim Tool, and a bevel cutter...

I did well through the venders exhibition. No brushes this year. BUT the new diamond tool veneer got me. My new set of diamond tips were back ordered and arrived yesterday. Now I can finish getting the wedding off the word fired pieces.

I have the do it all trimmer as well, I used it for a very long time, it is a great tool. I ended up buying some byson tools. now I just use those.

  23. Working on a design for an "Anti-Gravity" workspace mat. That way any dropped tools could be retrieved without bending over. Alternately, I could just use those things kids have to attach their gloves to their coats...

I have one of those grabber things. So far I just use it to grab things that have fallen behind my kick wheel.

  24. Made a couple of ceramic Jack-O-Lanterns for the front porch. I love pumpkins as decoration, but I like carving them less and less each year. This will solve that problem.
