  1. A heads up, to those up North. There are several kilns and wheels up for bid on Govdeals. Also, for anyone in Arizona, there is a front load Paragon kiln.

The one in AZ looks good. There is a 40 cf alpine in UT also looks great

Yeah, that Alpine is out of my wheel house... And price range.

  2. Ummm, did anyone lose some posts? I made a couple comments last night and this morning, and they no longer exist. Unless I'm imagining it all. Is this something to do with the update that was mentioned a while back?

Thought I was going crazy there for a minute. I was wondering if I said something the administrators didn't like.

I thought it had something to do with my short term memory problem...but realized it was just something to do with my short term memory problem :)

LOL I thought the same thing as Denise so I reworded my post about insurance ... I thought someone saw it as a sales push for Progressive insurance (you can NOT sell insurance across state lines unless you are licensed in that state)

  3. A mug a made five years ago, for my brother broke a couple months ago on the handle. I saw it in person this past weekend. It was not at the attachment point, so not sure what happened.

Also, I still really like the glaze combination I used, but it's a little "heavy" and the foot ring too sharp. Live and learn...

  4. Spring cleaning, in the studio. Mopped, organized, ready for the next project.

I need to mop. My cat is shedding.

You make it sound like cats ever stop shedding. Our's gets blocked out of my work shop, when I have a bunch of things going. She is too nosey, sheds everywhere, and steals my sponges.

  5. A freight train derailed nearby, no major damages. But they spilled some sodium bicarbonate and soda ash. I wonder if they need help cleaning it up?...

Standing 3feet away from a burning RR tankard for 13 hrs cured me to want to see another!!

      Yikes, Alabama! That's gnarly!

  6. I'm watching a Skutt kiln on the Govdeal website. It looks in fantastic shape, and is dirt cheap at the moment. Anyone used the site before? I'm just wondering how much it will jump the last day?

      Benzine

Well, it's jumped nearly $100 in a day. We'll see what the final hours bring...

    4. Benzine

      Benzine

No go. I tried bidding towards the end, but it kept jumping. Someone got a nice couple thousand dollar kiln for under four hundred.

I'll just have to keep watching. I've seen others come up, in the same area before. The rich school districts seem to dump good kilns, for new fairly often.

  7. Hmmmm... Just realized I haven't updated this in a while. Not much really to update. It's unnecessarily cold and snowy here.

So, what kind of cold is necessary .... : - )

The kind that drives aeay that sickening 110F poop weather we get in the summer here! Yuuuuck! I likes it in the 50s and sunny. Perrrrrfect! ♥

  8. Gotta love this time of year. Help students finish building their projects, go home to work on Christmas gifts, go back to school to fire the kiln, go home to work on gifts...

the daily grind of the potter, art teacher, parent partner, you love it!

  9. Making some jars as gifts, but couldn't work on them the last couple nights, and I have Parent/ Teacher Conferences tomorrow. So it's like caring for plants. I water them, so they don't dry out, otherwise, they just sit there...

Oh no Crusty, I'm not falling for that again. Last time I did that, not only did they not get any bigger, but the fumes they gave off, when fired, were nasty!... But on the plus side, the fumes gave me the ability to taste colors.....

Colors must taste like bat poop.

  10. Did a Raku Firing with my Art Club students yesterday. A good time was had, great results, despite it being the coldest temperature we had fired in.

    1. Babs

      Babs

What's the coldest you've had success at?

    2. Benzine

      Benzine

Well, this one was 20 F, when we started. It was in the teens, by the time we got through all three loads.

That is probably the coolest, that I've fired in. The only difference, that I've found that it makes, is how comfortable I am, while firing. It was a little chilly the other night. The students went inside, from time to time, but I was minding the kiln, so I was outside nearly the entire time.

  11. Raku firing on a crisp Fall evening. A student project, one of my own, and some test tiles.

    3. Crusty

      Crusty

did you like the results ?

    4. Benzine

      Benzine

Yes, fairly happy with the results. A vase, was supposed to have a blue lower portion, but turned out more copper-ish because of the reduction. I've accepted this part of Raku firing. The student project turned out great, but had some dunting, probably because of interior glaze thickness.

  12. The moment, when you just realized, that you forgot to ask a student, if they poked a vent hole in their intricate sculpture, that you are now firing...

      Benzine

No worries. The student came in, and they vented it, through the mouth that was part of the sculpture.

      Yo've taught them well!!

I try. This student though, extremely talented, and will spend hours on these incredible, subtle details. But sometimes, will ignore things that are the most obvious.

  13. Just got done reclaiming the heaping clay bin from my classroom, by hand. What, you think my arms got this toned by sitting around all day?

Typical teacher . . . getting the big bucks for playing around in clay all day.

    3. Pres

      Pres

Yeah,my Dad at loss how to explain my teaching job said I played with clay until my arms got tired and then played some more on the computer I didn't teach, had two playrooms. Ben your arms will recover, just as the clay recycled has.

Honestly, wedging never really tires me out that much. Give me a few minutes, a quick drink and a snack, and I'm ready to go.

  14. Raining outside, throwing mugs for graduation gifts inside.

Is it common practice for art teachers to make grad mugs in the US?

    3. Pres

      Pres

no, but often a courtesy and sign of respect.

I usually end up with 15-20 a year, but always have. a few extra. I'm trying to include a letter tile opposite the handle, for the student's first initial.

Min, I've almost always done mugs, because I want to give the student, something they will be able to use, and have for many years. Especially being as young adults seem to survive on cereal, coffee, Easy Mac and Ramen. So the mugs i make work well for all of those.
