  1. Finally put twelve pounds on the wheel, my first time over 5-6 lbs. my final conclusion was: I would rather make clay than throw it. Turned out - so so.

  2. Finished chapter three, now on to testing "iron" limits. Then the effects of sulfides and carbons: and their limits.

Please do. Given the time period, a brave undertaking on your part. No programmable controllers in 73. The only thing I remember from 73 is Pink Floyd playing in St.Louis.

  3. Finished COE graphs, alumina to CEC comparison charts. Okay, so I lead a boring life! It is what we Nerds do.

LT: think you misread my post. The COE is one graph, and CEC/ alumina is a separate graph.

      Ooo Kaaay.

Still, such a correlation would be nice.  Measure CEC and get a COE as a bonus.

Interesting thought, but sodium, potassium and calcium all exchange at different rates. I do think you could work a loose table off of spars. I have enough data tables, might run that over the winter. My next article is due out in August? I think. The one after that will make your lights go on. <teaser ad>

  4. Made a dozen bloat burgers today. Going to test specific reactions and limits.

  5. Mixed up 200lbs.,CR2 cone 6 porcelain: let the crystals begin. Going to mix up 50lbs., of cone 11 "wood fire" porcelain next weekend. Tested the cone 11 last year: does strange things :)

  6. Mixed up a porcelain and stoneware body with the high iron clay from the old brick yard. Already fired 100 gram samples, now for the 1000 gram samples. For some odd reason I sprinkled some 50 mesh grog in: get out of my head John.

Very funny (grog/John).  Tempting to run out and buy some Grogzilla and mix it into Southern Ice.

  7. Mixed/pugged 200 lbs of C6 porcelain with oxide additions specifically for crystalline glaze. Curious to see if adding crystal enhancers in the clay produce larger crystals.

  8. Off for awhile now. So I am going to read a book written long ago by one of the foremost slip chemist.

Lots of Calcium chloride over and under sodium dichromate. I haven't fired the zinc chloride yet. Snowing again. Brought in the materials from the kiln shed to fabricate the chamber of mt raku kiln. Too much to do, so little time.

      Thanks. I like it too.

Hahahaha that's what always happens to my plans. Today I shall throw! Clean the studio instead. Today I shall clean! Spend hours throwing. At this point when I decide what I want to do I should just laugh hysterically and go sleep under the studio table for a couple hours. ;)

  16. After owning my first wheel for two weeks: I have gone through nearly 100lbs of clay centering and pulling simple forms. I actually pulled a ten pound cylinder today: my first attempt with that much clay. I have also been using my own custom porcleain and stoneware bodies: which I like alot better. (bias intended)

Yes, you will get there! :) Gotta start somewhere. With me it was very small cylinders that I started with, I didn't make decent bowls till about six months ago.

Yeah, I've been doing this for fifteen years, and I still run into issues. And many times, it isn't me, but the clay. I use a clay that is far too stiff. You'd think I'd learn, but yet...

Best of luck in your endeavor. You'll ge there.

so i have been contemplating this, and I think you need a 6x6 dance floor in the middle of the studio so when a good song comes on you can just drop what your doing and break down. for example:
