  1. Working on a soft blue glaze today to celebrate the gender of my baby on the way. I think I might do some limited edition work in a very soft robins egg blue since that is my favorite mason stain to date. Finally getting some time in the studio again. Life is crazy.

  2. Man in checkered shirt looking at one of MY bowls (shelf right) at the reception for the NHPG Once Upon the Earth exhibit. The photo is manipulated for a retro look. I was glad I went-I usually don't...just not my thing, but it was fun to watch people cruising my stuff.

I think it is great that you went.

This way you can see very concretely whose day you made richer because you shared your work.

  3. I am finally back in the studio, hand- building. It is 23 degrees and I am snowed in. I won't get back to the wheel until spring.

In fact at 6:30AM I was at my table, carving a border onto a plaque. I have never made anything big and flat, so we will see how it survives. It is going to have an image "painted"in underglazes, including some oranges I am trying. [Now would I have called it hot here today? It was 34'.]

  4. Back to work for two weeks then a new hip for my wife-two weeks off for me then to caretake.

Best wishes to you both, Mark. I hope your wife's recovery is speedy and that she has terrific results.

  5. Happy with my shift in direction-or attitude- take your pick. I'm  becoming more process oriented (re:  formation of clay objects) in a primal kind of way.

Wonderful. I enjoy looking at your one-of-a-kind pieces.

  6. Oh well...I submitted two of my "Hidden Masks" (that reference domestic violence and suicide)  for a juried exhibit,  but got notice I was not accepted. Phooey. ..maybe shoulda gone with the bowls!

I think an artist needs sometimes to do this, make the courageous submission rather than playing it safe. A different venue might have taken them.

  7. Finished my 2019 detail budget and I can retain my helper who keeps me current with inventory/spreadsheets/photos. Yay me! (Of course I haven't been to a movie in 2 years, don't have TV and almost never buy clothes, but, hey, well worth it! ) Now I'm setting up my 'to do' calendar-hope I can stick to it this year.

  8. Dying inside a little every day, wishing I could make this happen faster...

At the risk of sounding like a mama, please get some help if you actually feel like you are dying a little every day.  I hope you figure out a way of feeling ceramically engaged even when you don't for a little while have hours for the studio.

  9. Over this past weekend I had a conversation with a woman who’s dad has mild dementia. It was at a sale I was doing and she literally jumped when she saw my porcelain polar bears. They are just little standing bears, nothing spectacular. She told me her dad and her have gone on yearly vacations since her mum passed away a few years back. In the spring she is taking him to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat where they care for orphaned or injured bears. She said he has always loved polar bears but with his dementia his memory is slipping so she bought him a bear to put beside his bed to remind him of the trip they will be taking. Thought it was really touching and appreciated that she took the time to tell me the story even though it made her cry.

What a wonderful thing to be able to do for her. As dementia challenges a person's ability to communicate with other people, animals can be a particular blessing.

Do you also demo/speak at the event?

  12. Aarrgghhh...we only got a few weeks notice that the guild I belong to is doing a raku demo 10/28.  I just emptied my kiln and I do not have anything low fire to fill it with,  so I could bisque (required) a few raku pieces for the event.  I'm going to try to crank out a lot of ^5 and bisque that along with the raku clay. I don't want to pass up the opportunity.

This sounds like a solid plan. I have been wanting for a long time to take part in a raku firing and hope to do so after the first of the year.

  13. Big weekend coming up as my trio of Horsehair Raku jars goes on the auction block at the local PBS KVIE station's annual Art Auction. At the preview Gala on Monday it already had an early bid of $150 against an asking price of $120. My segment of the auction will air in the 1PM hour on Saturday...

When my work is good enough, I hope to contribute it to auctions, not at the level of a PBS station but more of a local non-profit.  I am so glad when I hear that people whose work can really make a difference choose to donate it in this way.

Oh, no. So sorry about the broken bone. I am sure you will find some fine things to do as you heal.

  16. 1000 Miles Apart Ceramics Conference in Calgary this weekend. I haven't spent this much time watching demos in a looong time!

  17. Phooey...I went to pay for my shelf area for the anagama firing in October and it's full!! Next is spring or summer, but I'll probably cave and do the pieces in my L&L.

    1. Gabby

      Gabby

Sorry you missed this opportunity, but as you write, there are other firing options now, and you can be first in line for Spring.

  18. The rains have come. Trying to develop some big vessels to repeat for sale.

      Rain much better than smoke.

Does this mean you are sketching?

      Will you coil build?

      Gabby

I wish you a very good recovery from the sprain. I hope the cat and the view from your studio offer some quality time while you stay off that foot. [I broke a foot a few years ago and was very lucky my dog was a bulldog who wasn't much for long and speedy walks anyway].

I understand, Lee. I am actually completely inept at something like managing photos and admire those who can. I am so happy your load was pleasing.

  22. How could I find the name of the guy in the Pacific Northwest that is doing the acrylic like flow glazing? My results so far are quite mediocre and I could use whatever guidance I could get from him

    1. Gabby

      Gabby

I think I have found him. I guessed that if he was at Cannon Beach, he would be represented by Dragonfire Gallery. There are maybe twenty galleries in the town, but the curators have widely different tastes. I think it is Matthew Patton.

There is an Oregon Potters Association and a Washington State ceramics association as well. You might contact them.

The Oregon association has a very large show in April, more than 100 potters, I think. There are probably illustrated rosters.

  24. Well, it's got nuthin to do with ceramics, but  a big black bear just helped himself to the suet cakes hanging from my car port roof. He made a crushed wire mess of my pricey squirrel proof double cake suet hanger. I've been hanging suet for 8 years w/o being visited by a big fuzzy thief.  Guess I won't be putting that out anymore. Did I mention he was big? (And beautiful-a treat to see, truth be told).

    1. Gabby

      Gabby

Yes, it makes sense that squirrel proofing would not help with your big fuzzy thief.

How big a kiln did you acquire? How much work do you have time to do in a typical week? (This is one reason I won't ever have a kiln. I make only a few pieces a week)
