Russ reacted to neilestrick in Clear Glaze Application
There's no reason to apply a clear glaze over a colored glaze unless you like how it alters the look of the colored glaze, and it will alter the look of the colored glaze, sometimes just a bit, but often quite a lot. The clear will not just sit on top of the colored glaze. Whenever you layer glazes, they mix and mingle, and often become runnier. To what degree all that happens depends entirely on the formula of the glazes, the thickness of the application of each glaze, and the order in which they are applied. Test, test, test.

Tear down 1 wall and double the size! Then add a storage room for glaze and clay. Then add a storage room onto that for wares green and finished. Then add another space for a retail sales.

To me it looks as if glazes or slip are layered onto a textured piece and then partially removed by sanding or other method then fired. Almost looks like "raindrop damascus " in a way.

Russ got a reaction from Pres in QotW: Weight or volume, which is your preference when mixing glazes?
I use a digital scale in grams for glazes and a larger digital shipping scale for clay bodies  so.. weight!

YES.  Id try firing before i went to all the trouble of sanding and scraping.

As long as none of your ingredients are wet there should be zero problems with this.  Ive done this for years with -20f temps.

If you need it for glazes, just about any kaolin will work. I've used Sapphire, grolleg, Tile 6, etc, without problems.

Had 80hrs worth of finished damp greenware on a ware cart rolled by a door. I left that evening and when i came back in the morning everything froze because I didnt close the door properly. Big bummer.

Im with Bill. Ive seen this alot over the years with high boron copper reds in a supposed reduction atmosphere. Ive often wondered if the green is produced right after the firing while the glaze is still quite fluid but susceptible to an introduction of oxygen.

Stories like that are somewhat fear-mongering if you ask me..  try living in the dusty desert environment without breathing it in for decades and decades .  we have no higher incidence of silicosis than any other part of the country or the world for that matter.
    A nothing burger story. IMHO
