Closing on my office/warehouse in a couple of more days. The question now becomes: what studio toy should I buy?

so i have been contemplating this, and I think you need a 6x6 dance floor in the middle of the studio so when a good song comes on you can just drop what your doing and break down. for example:
-
If you're really feeling groovy you can mirror the ceiling so your disco ball really lights up the place.
-
And, glazenerd, it's life I'm high on. Thank you very much. LOL
-
I am reading a book on clay body formulation from 1959: and the information is relatively the same as in 2017. Why does this bother me?

Feel like I am right at the threshold of formulating an entirely new brand of clay. My wheels have been turning for sometime about this.
-
Neat man. Keep up the work!
-
If it is porcelain that throws like stoneware count me in.
-
After two hours of practice throwing this morning: I need to post in the "Help, I cannot center," and the "Help, I cannot pull walls, and the " Why in the he** did I buy a wheel anyway" threads.

Oh, Bill said, "if you are going to throw a lot, use soft clay". That was my primer. Now I'm loving it. Best wishes.
-
Yeah, I've been doing this for fifteen years, and I still run into issues. And many times, it isn't me, but the clay. I use a clay that is far too stiff. You'd think I'd learn, but yet...
Best of luck in your endeavor. You'll ge there.

My brain hurts. Think I fried some synapses.

I prefer the term fell in a hole. = )
-
Then I need to go ask Alice, I think she will know.
-
Sing this song while you make pots. "Give me love, give me clay, give me wheel to throw, Give me hope that my kiiiiln won't go coooooold," and repeat.
-
Spent the last few days writing a clay chemistry specific "glossary of terms." If someone would be kind enough to stop by an uncross my eyes, much appreciated.

Tom, don't you have an editor really close by, isn't your wife in the publishing business?
-
Correct Min. All the more reason I found the unsolicited offers to help most generous. Some technical review will still be required.
-
Gotcha. Yes, potters have to be some of the most kind and generous people I know!

Was doing a forum search on rare eath oxides such as Yttrium, Holium, and Samarium: wonder why these never came up in topics before?
- Show previous comments 8 more
-
I refer to them as oxides because most usually do; they are actually lanthanides.
-
Interesting- had to google it. The oxide is used in glass and it is an interesting read.
-
Does the Holium add pinholes :-)
-
You know you are getting old when you open the test kiln only to realize you never glazed anything!. hangs head in shame...

elf? Is there a season on them? Don't tell Santa.
-
LOL, glazenerd!
-
Love that one Marcia!

I recieved several private messages today from people still experiencing problems getting into the forum. Anyone have an update I can send them?

Ty very much GEP
-
I was advised to also clear my cache which helped my prob.
THe prev. bookmarks don't work for sure.
-
I'm curious...how many of you have had a MAJOR Windows 10 update? Come to think of it, my prob started right after the update...
-
Well, I finally managed to throw a form over the 12" tall mark. Managed to do it without it wobbling and spiraling. Just think, in another two years I might actually be good at throwing.

eight isn't everything. But congrats on your height in this case. Well done. through sheer determination!
-
Marcie: I am not only testing my ability, but also testing the ability of the clay.
-
I have not updated since last year!

I heard about bigger crystals in 17-you heard it here 1st
-
Is that a challenge?
Is 2017; crystal smack-down year?
-
Do it now. W. Clement Stone quote.
-
After nearly two years of testing and writing formula limits: threw my final stoneware recipe this morning. Finally satisfied with the results.

Oh dear! On a positive note she has family to help.

Looks like I have a causalty of war in the studio. Went out early to shut down the two test kilns: one was frozen in "8888" LED status. Lightning came through at 4am/: think it is fried.

The invasion has begun. Better put on the aluminum cones. LOL I hope you were able to get your kiln going again. Story weather is beautiful; if you don';t have to fire.
-
Can the controller be repaired? If these storms are persistent you may have to install a lightning rod ;-(
-
I turn off the main panel breaker, and individual breakers when I know they are coming through. This one got be my however...

I think it is weird science day. I have had these ideas for oddity glazes rolling around in my head for a month now. Good day to test them.

Babs; could you PM these links to me please. Keep getting error messages.
-
google david Snair crystalline glazes, I saw some of hiw work in an old Cermaic arts monthly mag, just a couple of beautiful pots.
-
Test results in the Slip Recipe thread I started.
-
Finished chapter three, now on to testing "iron" limits. Then the effects of sulfides and carbons: and their limits.

Please do. Given the time period, a brave undertaking on your part. No programmable controllers in 73. The only thing I remember from 73 is Pink Floyd playing in St.Louis.
-
I wish I could have heard pink floyd in st louis!
-
Ha! I saw them in 69 at Connie mac stadium in Phila. in a thunder /lightning storm. very cool.
-
I have been on the forum for roughly a month now. I must say it is an honor to see the works of so many talented and gifted people. The willingness to share knowledge and information is also commendable. Just thought it needed to be said.

Joel: those who think they know it all are the ones who have stopped learning.
-
I think pottery is an area where your vista is constantly expanding ... The more you learn, the less you know for sure. The narrower your focus, the wider your possibilities.
-
The more years in ceramics it seem the less I know

First pugmill being delivered Friday, another one at the end of September. Now to find a straight mixer.

Guess I have to wait another week, the delivery truck broke down yesterday.

I thought Community Challenge #5 would be a cake walk because I am a tile guy. After seeing just a few posts, I am getting very very nervous. Forgot how talented the people are in here. Do judges take bribes?

Paul: what I like about your work the most: always outside of the box.
-
Bruce: I know it is a challenge: just having some fun with it. Stirring the pot with a little throw down.
-
I have had good results from offering a virtual foot rub.
-
After owning my first wheel for two weeks: I have gone through nearly 100lbs of clay centering and pulling simple forms. I actually pulled a ten pound cylinder today: my first attempt with that much clay. I have also been using my own custom porcleain and stoneware bodies: which I like alot better. (bias intended)

Yes, you will get there! Gotta start somewhere. With me it was very small cylinders that I started with, I didn't make decent bowls till about six months ago.
-
Sure you will get there..Keep making mistakes, you'll learn more...i use to do more often..Practice Practice and Patience will count !!
-
awesome.
-
Picked up a bag each of Grolleg, McNamee, NZ, Helmer, and FHC: let the clay body tests continue.

Joseph: It will be over a month before I get done testing various parameters. I work with a five clay blend recipe.
-
Oh my mistake. Fun stuff?
-
Ah that's not too bad. Did a little maths and it comes out at £0.90 a kg and I pay £0.70 a kg
-
Think I finally convinced myself to write a book on clay formulation and remedies for common clay issues. Should not take me more than five years.

Excellent.

I would be interested to read it.
Best of Luck!

70 in mid Febuary. So for the first time in many years during winter- I am going to glaze fire tomorrow.

We hit 85 today. That's above normal.
-
Hahahaha that's what always happens to my plans. Today I shall throw! Clean the studio instead. Today I shall clean! Spend hours throwing. At this point when I decide what I want to do I should just laugh hysterically and go sleep under the studio table for a couple hours.
-
I fired a glaze firing Saturday it was 70 here. I'll be ready for another glaze firing by next weekend.

Mt favorite part of Christmas. Only one stirring is me. Got two of my first thrown pieces in the kiln: waiting to see how they turned out. Merry Christmas.

Sounds good. Hope your christmas is bright and merry.

Sitting out back, five feet from the hummingbird feeder, watching four of them fight over it. Amazing little creatures.

Have had two get stuck in my garage ... takes some doing to get them out!
-
I had that happen also, we tried everything even ran down to the store and bought a feeder and put sugar water in it. They finally left when it was lighter outside than in the garage.
-
I have been waiting for six months to see these results. Well worth the wait.

Getting away from clay is needful as well. The potter's passion for clay is a consuming fire at times. Gets really intense when you get on the path of a new glaze, form, or technique.
-
Keep experimenting, watching with interest.
-
Thanks Tom, I've never put much effort into my glazes mostly going with what was available and trying to make it work, sometimes with success and sometimes not so much. I can do pretty much with the clay as I wish I think, I'm a novice working with glaze chemistry and my experiments salvage jobs at best. Not that they don't work...the end result of the combination of glaze, and firings winds up being to complex to depend on. So the search for bright colors I like continues my last c6 celadon was disappointing , my own fault doing little bits here and there with ceramics I need to focus.
I'm in the north Nevada desert now finding everything but gold, tacks, bird shot, nails, bullets...did I say bullets lots of bullets and shells, tiny tiny bits of rust up to big old pieces of tin...spent the better part of today finding and replacing one of my tires that turned into something resembling a birds nest, the Nevada desert hates tires you see their shredded remains everywhere out here.
-
I mixed 10lbs of Coma Clay, bisq yesterday. Pull them out of the kiln, slather some glaze on them, fire em up. First time to seriously test crystal results.

Marcia: results posted in Glaze Chemistry thread under "Coma Clay." You will enjoy them.

not sure what coma clay is but becarefull you do not fall into one
-
Mark: Coma is the name I gave my custom porcelain tile recipe. Coma as in - no memory.
