Bartlett Genesis

Now that it has wifi can we build schedules on computer and just link everything together? I think this is the real next move, being able to monitor TCs and edit schedules remotely. I know there already exist things that offers some of this, not sure how much?. I wonder how long till manufacturers add this option to a kiln. I would like this for a little test kiln in the future, when I get one.

WHOA!!!! Neil, Is this something that I could add to an older manual kiln?

It would be really nice not to have to sit up all night flipping switches.

You could add it to a manual kiln just like any other digital controller- relays, thermocouples, transformer, in an external enclosure that the kiln plugs in to. But not the controller on its own. This particular one is a direct swap for Bartlett's other controllers, which is nice.

I don't know the details yet, and word on the street is that there will be added functionality in the future. This is a good start, though. I believe it does work with their KISS software, but it would be nice to eventually have a phone app for monitoring firings. I think this is the start of something amazing.

yea this is how I feel. If I could keep all this data on my phone or on a program on my computer it would be amazing. It would also be nice to wake up in the middle of the night and check my phone to see the temp of my kiln as opposed to getting out of bed and walking all the way to check on things.

ah but you will miss out on the switches clicking, the warmth of the kiln room, the smells of the deadly vapours, the chance to peek. THe chance to just finish that pot as you go past it, check the dryness of the ware rack.......

How hands off are you gonna become??

Nostalgic here for my old kiln whose interior colour could be seen from the gap at the lid......

I always fire at night, anyway. It would be great to get an alarm on my phone if there's an error code instead of waiting until morning to find out it didn't fire off properly. Maybe they could put in a microphone so you could hear the clicking of the relays. That would be comforting.

This looks awesome! The "features" page says wi-fi enabled. Does that mean they have built in the radio chip? The user manual on the "documentation" page doesn't describe anything about a wi-fi connection, and the circuit board diagram shows only a 10-pin header for a comm connection. Skutt offers an add-on wi-fi dongle or their KilnLink system, but that all seems to be Skutt-specific. Is Bartlett going to offer something of their own?

I plan to convert from a sitter soon. Cant decide if I will place the unit on the wall with 1 thermocoupler or replace the sitter and use 3 thermocouplers on the Skutt 1027.

Just waiting for the CDN $ to get better.

You can't just replace the sitter with a digital controller. You'd need a whole new outer box assembly in order to fit everything that's required- controller, transformer, 3 relays, terminal blocks, heat baffle, etc. Zone control would definitely be the way to go, though.

Not sure about any of that yet. Not a lot of information available yet. I just ordered a kiln for a customer in Colorado with an upgrade to the Genesis. I'll see what I can find out from L&L.

I read the pdf manual on the Genesis, too bad, but looks like it will have to be installed at a factory construct of the kiln. I am sure there are some of you out there that would be able to hack it into your own kilns, but for me, and my particular kiln, the only possible solution is an Orton that the kiln plugs into.

Neil:

Had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Frank Tucker (ConeArt) at NCECA. He was the one that informed me this model was coming: as we discussed in another topic. He did not know all the ins and outs of future technology: but he did mention they are looking at an Iphone App to monitor/program your kiln by. Let us see what the future holds. It is about time that Bartlett started catching up to Orton--- cheap>friendly< shot-- no charge.. :)

I,m hoping I can just wifi fire my pots like microwaves ovens.I could save a few thousand on my gas bill

I,m looking for that app in the App Store for my iPhone 6 to do it. I know that maybe solar also may work instead of gas for my car kiln.

I.m wondering about how to hook it up to my 2 inch gas line to convert it to solar?maybe feed the sunlight into a pipe cap?

I don't see anything in the manual that says that. What did you see? The wiring diagram is identical to the old controllers.

From the email newsletter I received from Bartlett:

The Genesis can be a direct replacement for one for our V6CF or RTC1000 controllers as all connections are the same, making the upgrade an easy transition.

Had this information from Bartlet about the Genisis

"The Wi-Fi features is only used for software updating at this time. If you would like to link the Genesis to the via your laptop, we offer our Radio Link as well as a wired version to monitor and control it from your computer using our KISS system. Currently the only manual we have is the User Manual. If you have any technical questions, you can call us or email us and talk to our tech for help."

Ha! I love it!

It's an awesome controller. It's maybe not worth it to swap out an old controller that's still working fine, but well worth it when starting from scratch. It's especially nice for custom programs. The layout makes it much easier to program, and you can label the custom programs with a name instead of just a number. The diagnostics are better, too.
