  1. From the album: Ceramics Fall 2016

We borrowed our friend's light-box this weekend and went to town! This is an oatmeal and reduction red called oxblood on a heavy iron-filing filled recycled clay body. Cone 6 reduction. I am not sure about the thumb rest myself, but people seem to love it and are requesting more!

Wonky handles as these are the first batch of mugs I made a few weeks ago. I have since learned a better technique!

Oh wow, adorable! I LOVE the color! Wonderful job (:
  6. Wow, there is just so much going on with this guy! I love it.
  7. That color is superb. Would love another clearer photo of it to bring out the shine. Lovely!

Little planter for air-plants or perhaps a bird house.
  9. From the album: Ceramics Fall 2016

A set of three stacking turquoise drip bowls. I am in complete and utter love with this glaze combo! I will add a little less iron speckles next time, but other than that I am very happy with the result!
  10. Had Monday off work and was visiting parents up north. Instead of coming straight home yesterday I went straight to the studio to see the new glaze kiln! I am so pleased with how some of the work came out!

Nice!!! :) Great way to come back after three years!

A nice simple planter. Nothing special and I am learning more and more about what I do and don't like in my pots for plants. Closeup on the rutile and other goodness in the glaze.

Another winning combo of glazes. I mixed a ton of iron filings into our recycled clay and put two glazes on the mug to re-create a safari/leopard/Savannah type look. The larger of the two is my personal favorite of all the pieces that came out of the kiln, the red drip is very appealing to me. There are three mugs in this set, I forgot to photograph the third. I also did a set of smaller espresso mugs in the opposite combo, red all over with the oatmeal glaze on the lip. Those came out great as well.

One of my wonky-handle mugs I used to test a glaze combination. I absolutely love how the glazes reacted and will definitely try to recreate it on better forms. I have since learned why my handles were coming out bad, they were too long! Ah, rookie mistakes.
  15. See, these photos look wonderful here, I wonder why they blur slightly on Insta? I love the nesting pot, I made my first set of three I will trim Monday! (:
  16. Love the execution of this mug. The drawings on it are wonderful, and the colors perfectly compliment the form.
  17. I just found out that all of our work is fired reduction by default. I also found out that only Soldate 60 and Porcelain are fired to cone 10, everything else is a cone 5 clay but fired to cone 6....I am still confused. I must bother the professor more with the how and why.

If you are in the typical group studio you are going to have two firing temps - 6 & 10 and one bisque temp of 06 or 04. This is set in stone so your instructor stays sane. When you get your own kiln you get to do whatever you want. With time you will learn the pros and cons of firing at different temperatures but in a school setting you just have to set limits.

My nephew took a pottery class at college and he was so upset that he didn't get to use whatever clay and glaze he wanted. I said, listen to the teacher. He doesn't want his kiln or other peoples' work ruined.

Yeah, no outside glazes or clay that makes sense. Our bisque is 06, and we have separate carts for the normal reduction ^6 stuff, and a cart that must have notes on your work if you want to do raku, saggar, ^10, wood fire etc.... would suck of any of those got mixed together! xD

I made 4 similar mugs from the recycled clay and iron filings in a glaze called moonlight. I have learned that a little goes a long way for the iron filings, and next time I think I will use less. Most of the filings came through on the inside of the cup, rusting slightly but covered thinly by glaze. Does any one else have experience with using too much iron filings? Do you feel it causes any safety hazards to the average human?
  19. From the album: NOT My Work!

NOT my work. I picked this adorable little guy up this weekend during our trip to Death Valley Nation Park. He just spoke through to me among the raku, the porcelain, and the amazingly carved Native American pots. This little guy was slip cast and painted by a local artist. I have dubbed him Ernest, and he now happily perches in the rock garden with a aloe vera cutting.

  21. I am LOVING the green! Throw some super tall cups, mugs, pitchers, or vases! That will help the height problems
  22. Ah I see, so pointing out that randomness should not be seen as flaws in all aspects of the ware?
