I am offered some used bricks from an old coal furnace ( about 500 at $1.50 each). I want to build a Bourry box for my kiln. I am concerned about what these are rated. low , medium or high duty.

About all you could do is fire it up to the temp you want it to work at and see if it melts or shrinks.

I am going to do a test in an electric kiln to cone 10. If these are low duty bricks I should see some indication I would think. I have about 20 of these bricks.

I fired one of these bricks to a hot cone 10 and did not notice any ill effects. The problem is the seller wants me to take all 500 bricks, but I don't think I can handle that.
