Cleaned my studio/ workshop Sunday. My workbench was overflowing with materials from numerous projects, not just clay work, but home improvement projects, my daughter's school project, etc.
Oddly enough, there wasn't a lot of clay scraps and residue, but a ridiculous amount of cat hair, from a certain feline, who thinks she owns the place...

Finally got a new splash pan, for my classroom Shimpo RK-2. The old yellow one, has probably been on there, since the Carter Administration. It had been cracked, since I started in the District, and I have been meaning to replace it. Finally, last year a bat flew off, and shatter one of the sides. So that forced my hand.
The wheel head *really* didn't want to come off. I actually had to remove the entire axle, just to get leverage, from the underside of the wheel head, to remove it. Half a can of "Liquid Wrench" didn't really help, until that point.
Now, I just have to remove as much as possible, from the frame, so I can remove the rust and old paint, and give it a fresh coat.

Finally got power back on this morning, after 8-1/2 days without due to the "derecho" that hit last Monday.

Denice,
Little to no damage to our home or garage to speak of. We lost half of our front tree, which is our only tree, and it kind of fell on our front porch. However, it just managed to dent part of the gutter.
We also lost a single shingle.
This definitely gave us confidence in the strength and durability of our Century old home!

I was a decorator for 20 years and potted on weekends and evenings. I had one of my regular customer's new home wiped off the face of the earth, her old home was next door and it just got shifted off the foundation. It was still a loss but they didn't lose everything in the home. We bought a 100 years old house shortly after the wind damage we had. We lived there for 13 years and had four tornadoes pass over our house. Usually the corners of our house would get broken off, we had one tornado that hit a school and shopping center near us. It dropped part of the shopping center roof in our back yard, we were very lucky. My husband was in the shower on the third floor when it passed over he came running down the stairs naked hollering about the tornado. For some reason the tornado sirens didn't go off. We had to move because of my MS, we built our new house to be solid and of course a basement. Denice

Heads up, to anyone looking for a kiln on the East Coast. Govdeal.com has a good looking Skutt, with a digital controller. The bids are currently low, and will likely jump, but worth looking into. I nearly got a kiln off the same site, a couple years ago, for between 3-400. I lost it last second.
There is also one listed on the same site, that is about an hour away from me. It is listed as "Not working", but might be worth it for me pursue. It does look as if there is some damage to the bottom bricks, possible an extreme glaze mess!

Spent the last couple days getting clay "kits" ready for students to take home. We had to go to Online Learning a week ago, and will continue at least past the Thanksgiving Holiday. I wedged the entire contents of our reclaim bin (650 lbs. or so), for the kits. We have so much surplus clay, I didn't want to add to that by giving them the boxed clay.
-
A heads up, to those up North. There are several kilns and wheels up for bid on Govdeals. Also, for anyone in Arizona, there is a front load Paragon kiln.
-
A mug a made five years ago, for my brother broke a couple months ago on the handle. I saw it in person this past weekend. It was not at the attachment point, so not sure what happened.

Came across a video on YouTube of a "Ceramics Throw Down" show on the BBC. Here's hoping they bring that one to the US too. Link for those interested:

Did a Raku firing last night with some test tiles for my Art Club firing this week. Also used a pumpkin as a reduction chamber for a ceramic pumpkin... Yes, clever I know...

Babs, I tried something similar a couple years ago, but scooped out the "guts" first, and dried the pumpkin a bit. Some interesting results. This time, I just cut the top off the pumpkin, and put the hot ware directly into the pumpkin guts, seeds and all. The pumpkin top seals nicely to keep the air out. Pretty interesting result. I'll post photos later.

Did a Raku Firing with my Art Club students yesterday. A good time was had, great results, despite it being the coldest temperature we had fired in.
-
What's the coldest you've had success at?
-
Well, this one was 20 F, when we started. It was in the teens, by the time we got through all three loads.
That is probably the coolest, that I've fired in. The only difference, that I've found that it makes, is how comfortable I am, while firing. It was a little chilly the other night. The students went inside, from time to time, but I was minding the kiln, so I was outside nearly the entire time.

Did a Raku firing with my departing Art Club Seniors. For reduction, we used their old notes, papers and tests. Fun was had, minus the heat and humidity...

Fired a class load last week. Had a larger student sculpture that had been drying for weeks. Had a slow bisque fire program. Everything was going well, until the kiln got around 1000 F. Felt steam coming out of the peep... It was like the engine room scene from Titanic. FULL STOP!!!

Scotty would have pushed her to Warp 12 and held on for dear life.
-
Yep, it survived. After shutting off the kiln, I kept checking the peep for moisture. When none was detectable, I started it back up. No issues. There were no spots over 1/2" thick.
-
Good job on the steam check. I always use the hand at the peep hole to check for moisture during bisque, and glaze firings.

Getting my classroom set up, and turned over my Shimpo RK wheel. The inner workings are spotless! The outside has a bit of wear and tear, appropriate for its age, but the inside looks new. Wasn't expecting that!
-
Got some cement board, to replace the canvases in my classroom. Good Lord is that stuff heavy!
-
Hmmmm... Just realized I haven't updated this in a while. Not much really to update. It's unnecessarily cold and snowy here.

Homecoming Week at school, which means dress up days for students and staff. I did a wheel throwing demo today dressed as Mr. moneybags from Monopoly.

I believe you've one-upped Mr Leach throwing in his 3 piece suit. I haven't seen images of anyone throwing in a top hat í ½í¸

I believe you've one-upped Mr Leach throwing in his 3 piece suit. Top hat for the win!

Had the top hat, mustache, bowtie, the whole works. I did take the jacket off though.
Sorry, no photos were taken.

I have a dipping glaze for my classroom, but want to have a small bottle, do the students can brush it on as well. What should I add to the small bottle? Epsom Salts to keep it suspended? Gum solution so it dries slower?

REad Pete Pinnells article http://www.claytimes.com/articles/glazeadjusting.html Adjusting glazes
-
Takes a lot of CMC, so I make my own.
-
Thanks for the responses all. I went with a little bit of Epsom salt and gum solution. Initial test went well. Brushed on pretty evenly. I may have to tinker a bit more, but it's a start.

I was pouring glaze over the outside of some little tumblers the other day. I used a small sour cream container lid to shield the bottom from glaze. Worked pretty well.
-
did you simply place the lid over the bottom of the tumbler? Then pour?
-
Yes indeed. I didn't want to bother waxing them, or spend the time wiping off the excess. I saw a lid sitting there, and I gave it a shot. If I wanted the end of the glaze to be further up, I would scoot the lid further to the side I was pouring on.
-
Why not just dip upside down? Were you using a different liner glaze?
-
-
I will be gathering quite a few of these: https://goo.gl/images/NGXZn7. Think they would be good for small amounts of glaze materials? They even come with their own scoops.

Nice. So exciting!

Congrats, Poppa!

Had quite a bit of time in the hospital. On the plus side, I came up with a few pages of concept sketches for wares.

I'm watching a Skutt kiln on the Govdeal website. It looks in fantastic shape, and is dirt cheap at the moment. Anyone used the site before? I'm just wondering how much it will jump the last day?

-
Benzine you live close pick it up for a song-sell your other one.
-
Well, it's jumped nearly $100 in a day. We'll see what the final hours bring...
-
No go. I tried bidding towards the end, but it kept jumping. Someone got a nice couple thousand dollar kiln for under four hundred.
I'll just have to keep watching. I've seen others come up, in the same area before. The rich school districts seem to dump good kilns, for new fairly often.
-
Just got done reclaiming the heaping clay bin from my classroom, by hand. What, you think my arms got this toned by sitting around all day?

-
Typical teacher . . . getting the big bucks for playing around in clay all day.
-
Yeah,my Dad at loss how to explain my teaching job said I played with clay until my arms got tired and then played some more on the computer I didn't teach, had two playrooms. Ben your arms will recover, just as the clay recycled has.

Honestly, wedging never really tires me out that much. Give me a few minutes, a quick drink and a snack, and I'm ready to go.
