docweathers
I have one red Sherrill Mudtools Polymer Rib that I like very well for smoothing throwing and trimming marks. I'm considering buying some more, but I have never seen or tried any of the other colors. What do people recommend for throwing?
Mark C.
Doc they vary to soft to hard see chart here-soft red -hard blue http://www.clay-king.com/mudlist.htm I like the green and yellow one's myself but I'm not a big rib guy anymore=I have a pile of them I do not use ,but when I need a rib I reach for the greens and yellows I really like his mud cutter and bow cutters-spendy but they are the cats meow . I use them on my extruder for cut offs and cutting sponge holders and soap dishes
bciskepottery
I use my Red and Yellow ones the most. Red for finishing; yellow during throwing. Yellow is mid-way between Red (soft) and Blue (hard). Green is between Yellow and Blue.
MatthewV
I only use the green ones. The smallest one and the one with two flat edges (spatula shape) see the most use from me. I have tried all the shapes and colors.
GiselleNo5
I had a red one and a blue one. Apparently I threw the red one out with the clay water because it's gone, but the blue one is very nice. It's hard, but I use it for the inside of bowls (it's a small one) and also I like to use it for smoothing when I'm trimming. It's firm enough to handle leather hard clay. My current life goal is that when I become independently wealthy I will have one in each color and then I will really know which one is my favorite. GiselleNo5
By the way, their wire cutters are AH-mazing. I splurged on two, one for my wedging table and one for my wheel. Best of their kind. My one complaint is that the only ones I can find are a little too short to work well cutting larger items off the wheel. But other than that they are wonderful. Joseph Fireborn
I use yellow. I have 3 different ones and I use them all. After I throw my walls they are usually used for altering the pot on the wheel. I find I use metal ribs less and less. My most used one is the : Y2 on that link that Mark provided. I also use the large bowl ribs a lot when smoothing the inside of my bowls.
ChenowethArts
I use the red, bowl ribs quite often...they seem to match my large bowl needs perfectly. The others that I us are the green, platter ribs...I won't do a platter without one. Peace, Paul:)
What?
I like and use the green colored ones. I still prefer metal and wood ribs though. I found that buying every rib under sun was no substitute for wheel time. I could throw with a piece of cardboard just as well.
Mark C.
I used to use ribs a lot more ( say 15-30 years ago) now its very rare as my fingers do the same job and I do not want all the finger marks gone. Thats one of the things I like is the ware look hand made.
docweathers
Mark You probably make more pots in a week than I have ever made. Therefore my fingers are probably not as good as your fingers, so I need some way to cheat
S. Dean
My favorites to use are red in shapes 0 and 1 (for smoothing/finishing during throwing and trimming) & yellow in shape 2 for general throwing. Folks seem to prefer green or yellow, but there doesn't seem to be much need to have both these colors once you find out which you like better. The small shredder is great too. -SD
Marcia Selsor
I use the red for smoothing the outside of orbs and the green for forming the inside of orbs. I also use wooden ribs for forming. Marcia
