Hahaha! I keep saying I gotta hire a studio monkey to wedge clay for me, but now the job apparently includes cleaning up after my derpy moments. :D

  2. A couple of yahoos were racing on the highway at 2:30am, crashed, and knocked out the power in three small towns. My Fred was firing when the power was cut, hnnngh... He got back online, though. :)

Bummer. That happens often in our little backwater county. Our infrastructure is so mickeymouse.

My 7k generator natural gas keeps me working thru outages -that said its not enough to fire an electric kiln with my other loads

  3. Anyone get a spam message from some Filipino lady today?

  4. Are any of you guys having trouble changing your avatar? :(

I am new and tried to update my profile today. The picture would say it was uploading then available to crop but it wouldn't display.

  5. Cavy Fire Studios. That is my final choice of a name. It's actually a rather personal name, as my daily pain is a trial by fire for me--just like what my ceramics endure. The cavy brings me joy--two halves to one whole. Don't care if it's too cutesey to some, as one cannot please everyone--I am cavy fire!♥

Yes, please call me Guinea. ^_^ And my logo is totally going to have pottery in it, and a peeg. Must have peeg. Not many people know what a cavy is, but a picture will help. A cavy is a guinea! ^_^

I hope your logo is a guinea pig going super saiyan

Hahaha! I was thinking a peeg poking out of a pot with a graphic fire symbol behind him. Maybe the name will be on the pot. :3

  6. Darnit, the heat finally broke (gonna be 80! Yippee!), and I'm stuck cleaning house. It'd be a perfect trimming day, too. I think I'll try and underglaze later on, though. Pics? :)

  8. Finally hooking my kiln up this weekend. Been a rough couple weeks, but hot-place or high water, I`m cranking out yarn bowls like a madrodent.

Gorgeous as always! If you don't mind, I'd like to show my students pictures of your work, to show them what's possible with underglaze.

Also, I too like the black and white, with terracotta showing through. I figured it took less time, as you verified. That would be a great time saver for you.

  11. Fred, my beloved little firebox, you are gonna be the death of me. ARGH. #firingtrouble

  12. Gallery backed out on me. Stings quite a bit, but I guess that means I can sell those pieces on my own. I'm a pretty grumpy guinea right now, though.

A former teacher, my High School Art Teacher as a matter of fact, once told me, "Don't spend time worrying about things you can't control." There are a lot of things in life we can't control. Two of the biggest are weather and people. We just have to find an alternative, when either thing presents an obstacle.

  13. Glazed five items today and I'm one tired guinea. Boy, I miss the days where I could glaze ten times that in one day, haha. :D *goes to rocking chair to pass out*

Now, standing for a couple hours to fold laundry and do dishes and I feel like I've been run over by a truck. S T I N K S!!

  14. Glazzzinggg...three pieces. :D

  15. Has anyone ever had shoulder problems from throwing? Like bursitis or rotator cuff issues? My buddy tore the crap out of his making macho-pottery & needed surgery. Mine are KILLIN'. I wanna throw! ;.;

You are SO TALENTED so you need to take care of YOU!! If you want the longest career possible you have got to take care of the equipment! You are hurting too many parts of your body.

    3. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

I don't understand why you don't just coil build or something. If throwing is so hard on you, maybe try an alternate method. There are some absolutely breath taking pots that are coil built. I am not telling you what to do, but your work is so awesome I would hate to see an injury stop you from doing what you can do best.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Or ... since you love the decorating so much ... slip cast it! Then do your wonderful paintings.

  16. HNNGH HNNGH HNNGH! There's a wee test kiln on CL for $400 that is practically MINT. Oh, WHY do I have to be broke until Juuuune....we sure have expensive taste, us ceramicists. :D

    1. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

I resisted doing this for two of the last three years. I did little projects, I made my stamps. No glaze for those. So cheap. I finally gave in, I'm setting up my studio and I'm so broke!!!

    2. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

I'm so frugal about everything else, too. Jewelry? Nah. Haircut? Won't spend more than $25. Shoes? Only if they're buy one get one free. That all goes out the window when it comes to pottery equipment! LOL

    3. High Bridge Pottery

      High Bridge Pottery

I keep looking at free kilns on the internet and wanting to take them all. If only I could lift the weight of 4 men by myself.

  17. I finally got around to making an underglaze key today! Shoulda made one ages ago, honestly. With my shiny clear, what you see is NOT what you get! :)

Gerstley is the worst culprit in my opinion. It does all of the above to color and also causes bleeding of colors. Find a zinc free recipe and your colors will get better immediately.

    3. Cavy Fire Studios

      Cavy Fire Studios

Ooooh really? Huh, that's interesting. I confess I really enjoy the bleeding in my copper carb and mazerine blue, though. That might explain why Mayco's cobalt blue UG REALLY looked awful with that glaze...it makes for such beautiful bleeding effects for my shading, too. :) I think so long as my black is stable, I'm good. ♥

As long as you know what gonna happen, you can control outcome. Just don't trust it with green! :-)

  18. I FINALLY uploaded the glazed and finished fox head to the gallery! :) Sorry it took so long; I habs no internets...boohoo...

  21. I just learned from one of my longtime clients that a bun of hers I made a portrait of passed last night. It always hits deep, hearing that. Through my art, I feel like I know them in spirit. :'( I guess I'm weird...

  23. I think I'm gonna play more with black and white on terracotta. Gotta make holiday gifts for my loved ones (maybe replace the stinky mug my mom has...). ♥

    1. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

I am about to start on holiday gifts as well. Last year I failed miserably and waited to late, and overfired all my porcelain and it bloated and warped.

I will probably start this week on everything. Bowls with scalloped rims. Spoonholders for everyone. Set of soup mugs to replace the terrible ones I made last year. A platter and a few big bowls.
