starsbythedoor
Hi everyone! I am am new to ceramics after moving to it from metal clay. Things are going well but there is one constant error. I have a small jewellery kiln and it fires to the correct temp and the ceramic and glaze is working fine APART from where the object touches the kiln shelf on a glaze fire. I make pendants and rings mostly and it is so upsetting to have the items ruined or stuck to the shelf!! I use low fire stoneware clay and low fire glazes. So my question is what do I fire my pieces on. I have seen metal kiln furniture, is that the way forward? I am hoping you can help me, if you need any more info from me let me know! Thank you! Marcia Selsor
are you using kiln wash? Marcia
bciskepottery
If you are glazing front and back, you could use kiln stilts to place the items on. Items should pop off, but you may need to grind down any pin marks left by the stilts. If the back is not glazed but sticking to the kiln shelf, you can either put kiln wash on the shelves to prevent sticking (or plucking). Even then, if the sides of your items are glazed, you may still want to use stilts.
oldlady
stars, if your kiln is labeled with the manufacturer, try contacting them, the TECHNICIAN, NOT the receptionist, and ask about the problem. most are willing to help if you know what you are doing. neilestrick
Glaze cannot touch the shelf. It will melt and fuse. You either need to keep the backside unglazed, or use stilts.
Pugaboo
I made myself some bead racks so I don't have to use stilts and can glaze the entire jewelry piece. Since you have what sounds like a small kiln you could make the bead racks to fit into the space you have. T
Chris Throws Pots
Glaze cannot touch the shelf. It will melt and fuse. You either need to keep the backside unglazed, or use stilts. Stilts of all sizes: https://www.sheffield-pottery.com/category-s/112.htm The glaze will release from the metal (nichrome) prongs, but it will stick to the ceramic base of the stilts, just as it will the shelf. Make sure your pieces are balanced and only in contact with the prongs. As mentioned earlier in the thread, you'll likely end up with little sharp prong marks. You can easily grind these down with a Silicon Carbide Dremel Attachment or with slightly more effort using a Stilt Mark Grinding Stone.

oldlady
pugaboo may be too busy to answer. she has a new puppy, a new job and a very complex life. she wrote about this in a thread from years ago. to find it, go to just plain "forums" not a specific topic. type "bead rack" in the box marked "search" and you will find a whole lot of stuff. look for the one you want and you will see a great design.
