  1. This evening is my very first show ever. I'm excited and also slightly terrified! My kiln load yesterday came out beautiful with lots of new designs to sell and my dad helped me build display shelves last weekend. Babysitter is coming soon and after that it's a mad scramble!

Thanks for the follow up. Interesting day it sounds like. I would keep making what you love and just find people who like it.

  2. On my way out of the studio tonight I suddenly had a brilliant idea of a way to move things around, have more storage AND more floor space! I measured and everything would fit so of course I started heaving around filing cabinets and bookcases at 12 am. I neglected to move my shelf of drying pottery first and with a huge crash something fell straight on the top shelf, breaking a mug I can make again and a dinosaur piggy bank for my son that has taken me hours to make. :( :(

and one for whatever. They're also about 12 inches deep and I can actually keep them in front of my wall shelves and just swing them out (carefully) like a huge door when I need to get at something stored on the wall shelves (I will only store things I don't use very often). Plus I can move them to wherever I'm working or loading the kiln.

      GiselleNo5

I know you cannot ever have too much storage and especially in a pottery studio you MUST have empty shelves for your current work.

I have crashed several pieces moving shelves around. They were usually out of view and had been sitting around for a while. I figured they will come out better the next time.

  3. Glaze fire IN! As usual on the strength of one good test I have done something new with a whole kiln load because apparently I'm insane. I think it's going to be fine, though. I'm 98% sure.

I have a few photos of the orange/peach poppies up in my gallery if anybody wants to see. I am still not sold on it so I'm going to run some tests with each color interior paired with poppies in peach, orange/peach, and orange so I can compare them all. I have a feeling that some will go better together than others.

  4. Can I have a day off from everything? I want to just stay in my PJs and lounge around and do nothing useful for a WHOLE DAY.

  9. Threw porcelain for the first time ever. >:( It was not cooperative. I have been doing so well, yet I scraped off several flops. Finally I went back to B-Mix and my confidence was so shaken that I kept having flops with that too. Grump grump grump.

I don't plan to work with porcelain but if I do I'll keep that in mind. I like working with stoneware. I was only throwing with my dad's porcelain was to make some mugs for him. I trimmed and attached the handles last night and they look really great.

  10. Studio Tour is tomorrow and I wasn't even nervous till about an hour ago, when suddenly "Who am I kidding?" popped into my head. All I can see is the mistakes and the simple beginner's shapes and I just want to call the whole thing off!!

I still have a lot of my second kiln load of wheel thrown stuff (the first load is to be kept or gifted, not sold. Too funky!) and I have really progressed to better forms and surface design. My solution was to put all those pieces I didn't like in one spot and leave them unpriced. Anybody who asked the price already liked them, so they weren't JUST buying them because they were cheap. Unloaded a few, but mostly full-priced stuff and even just had one online sale from someone who...

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

... someone who came in today, bought nothing, but ordered from home. Had really great conversations with a few visiting potters, who were all very kind and friendly. No sneering as I had imagined. ;)

  11. Spent 30 minutes this afternoon weighing and wedging clay to throw after my son's bedtime. Only he got sick so instead of throwing clay I dealt with throw up.

  12. I had thought of applying to show five cups in the Cup: The Intimate Object show at the Charlie Cummings gallery in the fall. I was a bit intimidated by the resume requirement. Do they only accept artists with formal training and a degree? I was curious if anybody knows.

I think galleries use the information when they cary an artist as part of their permanent gallery artists. This makes it easier to answer questions from customers. I think it is pretty routine. I recently had a gallery "not bother" with gallery sheets, and then I got a panicked email from a gallery sales person wanting information about how I made a particular piece. I prefer galleries that keep that type of info in their office. That's is why they get paid 50% if their sales pers...

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

It isn't that they wanted information about how the work was created, I was just a little stumped by a resume requirement. I'm entirely self-taught. Thank you to everyone for the response. As I mentioned to Tom, I want to be 100% fine with hearing NO and not take it personally. Denice: that bothers me. What does a degree have to do with the quality or kind of art you make.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

I hope I am not irritating any of the lovely people who have art degrees when I say that. It's just that either your work is of a high enough caliber for a show, or it's not. I have seen plenty of low quality work made by art school graduates so it really should rest on the work itself more than anything else, should it not?

      GiselleNo5

Duncan teacher plus kiln, 3 items did NOT have shards inside. I went to go unload (it's my dad's kiln) and he had ground off every shard so I could refire. All I have to do us touch up.

Exciting. Are we going to see more slip work in the gallery soon? I just ordered my super duper extruder based on your recommendation today. And some Flex Grips for my GG. Going to be getting my butt back in gear since my son is back in school now. Can't wait to see your new stuff.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

I am going to be glazing a bazillion pieces of bisque and then starting a cycle of white clay, which I slip trail. :) Soon! I may even post some YouTube videos. I'm trying to find a really good tripod that I can angle the right way over where I'm working.

  17. Three weeks later I'm finally photographing that huge glaze load. Starting to post in the gallery if anybody wants to see.

I laughed at the popping up at people thing. Shelves do look bigger in the photos. Interesting that people handled middle more. Either way not too much to worry about just improve and learn like u said. I bet others will have better comments who actually do shows unlike me. I was just coming from a consumer stand point. I like ur pots a lot was surprised u didn't sell much. But I guess it happens.

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Oh, no, I really value it. I had a couple people send private messages and I have gotten completely unique perspectives from every single person. Also I can't exactly ask my customers what they think of my display, they're hardly going to give an honest critique! LOL People would come up and I would have this moment to decide whether I stood up and startled them or stayed sitting down and watched them creepily from between the shelves. I felt like I was hunting wabbits.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Thank you, by the way. This kiln load had barely any "whoops" to it. A couple things had to be ground off but no bubbling, nothing to be refired for the first time ever. Shocking. ;)

  19. This year, let's see if I can find the right cycle of work and stay in it. It's all about balance and consistency. Easy. ;)

I think people make the bullet journals way to complex. It should really be something quick that you spend like 10 minutes a day on. But yea I have no idea. I have never made one. Thinking about trying it this school semester.

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Hm. Maybe I should research "SIMPLE bullet journal". :) Since I tend to make things complicated anyway simple is GOOD. Let me know if you try it, Joseph, I'm curious how they work. I definitely could use something to be more organized. Too much going on in my mind at any given moment.

    4. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

Yea. I dunno. I am not the type of person that makes journals. I can remember most task I have to do. I was mostly thinking about it for school assignments. We will see if I ever get "around" to it.

  25. Today we unloaded a huge glaze kiln containing three months' work. Some of the pieces are better than I thought ... but the kiln overfired on the lower shelves and caused pits and blisters. Will regroup tomorrow when I'm less upset and figure out what's salvageable.

I had a talk with my one friend who is an experienced potter and her advice matches yours exactly. At this point it's an unusable item so I'm not risking anything. Really I had lots of good results and lots of items that came out beautifully and this is only my third kiln load ever. I'm just being a perfectionist.

    3. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

Wow. 3rd load with successful pots is fantastic. Congratulations. Im on my like 50th firing and I still toss away 99% of everything.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Oh my word I would die. I'm using commercial glazes so I'm sure that makes a difference. This load I would say 1/2 were wonderful, no flaws, the othe 1/2 had tiny flaws mostly and a few were really messed up. The kiln we used is huge, its so big I have to stand on a 2 ft stepladder and bend upside down to load the bottom shelf.I fired around 75 items. I'll post photos tomorrow.
