  1. Hope everyone had a safe 4th of July. I know I grilled out a metric ton of hot wings. NOM NOM NOM.

Unloaded a kiln of goblets for my aunts Agape youth retreat, mowed the lawn and then watched movies with my wife and brother Booter the rest of the night. We made vegan nice-cream. Hope you had a safe holiday also.

  2. Posted two cups of the new application process that I had posted about the other day. Since everyone said I left them hanging.

Are you ready to reveal the process?

Your process and the learning curve to get there, would make a good CM article.

  3. It is amazing how happy accidents lead to discovery and mental explosions of thought. Today I was screwing around loading my kiln and just was trying some things and after I applied some glaze to a cup, a million thoughts ran through my head and I think I figured out a crucial way to apply glazes on a form I want to use.

  4. It is amazing how easy it is to make good pots when your only working with 1 set of glazes. You can see the colors and things happening as you make it. Rather nice.

Nice. I plan on eventually adding more color to my work, but for now I am going to just explore these white/grey/brown tones.

  5. Today is my anniversary of pottery three years now. I posted an image on the gallery with more thoughts for anyone who wants to read it. Thanks to everyone here for all your wonderful help, thoughts, and support. Without you all I wouldn't be a potter.

Congrats on the 3 year mark-is that 3 years with clay from scratch 3 years ago?

    3. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

Yes. I have never touched potter until three years ago. I was bored out of my mind and needed something to do. Got addicted. It has been awesome. Mostly because of everyone here.

  6. Maybe finally found my main glaze for my work.. Firing it on a few larger pieces tonight.

    1. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

maybe. still have a lot of work to do to find components that go with the glaze. A darker version to spray over, modifiers and fake ash glazes. but yea. the journey for a base might be near. which makes me happy tbh.

      Joseph Fireborn

Aye! I enjoy the process more when I make things I love. I love yunomi. Thin beautiful cups. I figure I can apply to other cup shows in 2018 besides AKAR. There is one called SIP. I believe there are others as well. So I might be applying to a lot of those in 2018!

I have had a far more difficult time getting my glazes right than any other aspect of ceramics. I rarely have issues of any kind with the making process, if I'm going to have a problem it's always with the glazing. It can be really discouraging and the journey to success is different for everyone. It's such a disappointment when time after time you open the kiln and the results you see don't match the one you were going for. :(

    3. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

Giselle. I can get my glazes pretty good now. I struggled with replicating results for a long time. But now my real problem is just picking a glaze and sticking to it. Although maybe it isn't a real problem. I do need to start using some glazes on actual work and listing it online for sale. I think I am just going to make yunomi and cups with handles for a while. They are my favorite to make anyways.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

I tend to stick to about a half-dozen glazes, I don't think that's too many. How many do you have?

I had a good time. Main focus is building a small .5# shape that I can experiment with and spray glaze test on after I finish with the tile part of the testing. The bottle I have developed I think will work well for this.

  13. Oh the joy of buying 15'' shelves, then getting home and they dont fit cause they are 15.5 inches and you have an L&L Kiln with element holders. DUN DUN DUN....

Whew... Done! Now I have blackish/grey kiln shelves. The corelite shelves held up a lot better than the cheap ones that I bought a while back. Those are like the ocean now. The corelite ones you can't even tell a grinder was on them. When I finished I patted my clothes off and it was a white dust storm. The sky was blocked and my dog yelped because she was scared of the sudden darkness.

  14. SPRING WHERE YOU GO!? Just when I start enjoying spring and have my garage door open, a cold front comes in and I am back in the house hiding from my freezing studio and achy bones!

  15. Garage door insulation almost finished. It is already getting hot in there from my space heater + house door open. Literally could tell the difference in 1 hour.

Chilly, that's how it is with California. Except it's two drops of rain that stops us in our tracks. We drove down to L.A. last weekend after rain and there were accidents on every freeway.

  16. Just ordered garage door insulation. It's just too cold out there for my old bones. My heater warms it up a little, but now with the insulation I should be able to stay out there all day again!

I got an electric kettle this year for the studio. It's great for heating fresh throwing water and I also heat water to clean my wax resist brush.

My hands ache and burn when I go out there at night. During the day is fine. At night if I run a load of laundry in the dryer and use hot throwing water and wear layers it's not too bad.

Have you been to the doctor? I thought I had a bad head cold. It was two days before Xmas so I thought I would see my doctor before the holidays. Turned out I had pneumonia. Had to skip Xmas.

I go to the hospital a few times a month to see my blood doctors. They do nasal lavage and test it for everything. Clean so far. I have no idea what it is. It is almost over though. Ready to get back out there. I have been doing a lot of glaze study and reading.

Last order of clay I got from my supplier was almost soup. Had to dry it out on plaster boards. Next time I am opening a bag before I pick it up.
