  3. Spodumene is such a great word. I always hear it in a British accent. ^_^ Glaze chemistry is rad! ♥

  4. I think I'm gonna play more with black and white on terracotta. Gotta make holiday gifts for my loved ones (maybe replace the stinky mug my mom has...). ♥

      Joseph Fireborn

I am about to start on holiday gifts as well. Last year I failed miserably and waited to late, and overfired all my porcelain and it bloated and warped.

I will probably start this week on everything. Bowls with scalloped rims. Spoonholders for everyone. Set of soup mugs to replace the terrible ones I made last year. A platter and a few big bowls.

  5. FINALLY got a new avatar! ^_^ Hooray for actually being on a real computer and not my dang phone... :D

Yay!! Try hitting "refresh" and see if it works. :)

  6. So, yesterday, my fella and I went to the local game/book shop to get some DnD dice (#nerd), and I remembered there is a pottery shop in there. I walked out with the SWEETEST little mug! The lady who was working that day made it, too. I'll post a pic when I get back home. :)

  7. Has anyone ever had shoulder problems from throwing? Like bursitis or rotator cuff issues? My buddy tore the crap out of his making macho-pottery & needed surgery. Mine are KILLIN'. I wanna throw! ;.;

You are SO TALENTED so you need to take care of YOU!! If you want the longest career possible you have got to take care of the equipment! You are hurting too many parts of your body.

    3. Joseph Fireborn

I don't understand why you don't just coil build or something. If throwing is so hard on you, maybe try an alternate method. There are some absolutely breath taking pots that are coil built. I am not telling you what to do, but your work is so awesome I would hate to see an injury stop you from doing what you can do best.

Or ... since you love the decorating so much ... slip cast it! Then do your wonderful paintings.

I think I injured my shoulders (well, I KNOW I did) cleaning my humongous rabbit's poopybutt nightmare, and wedging just took the taco.If I'm not better by Monday, I'm calling the doctor. I have an ice pack on it and am sitting on my bum, totally bored. It hurts to even slightly move my arm; I'm typing with my phone. Argh! >.<

  9. Glazed five items today and I'm one tired guinea. Boy, I miss the days where I could glaze ten times that in one day, haha. :D *goes to rocking chair to pass out*

  10. Wow, Skutt is sure Johnny-on-the-spot for their parts delivery! Ordered the switch box yesterday and got it delivered today! :) ...this looks scary...

Just take one wire off at a time and attach it to the exact same location on the new block. Easy peasy! :D

I'm actually gonna wait for my fella to come back from his trip to install it. All that wire work will kill my creaky fingers... :'(

  11. I finally got around to making an underglaze key today! Shoulda made one ages ago, honestly. With my shiny clear, what you see is NOT what you get! :)

Gerstley is the worst culprit in my opinion. It does all of the above to color and also causes bleeding of colors. Find a zinc free recipe and your colors will get better immediately.

    3. Cavy Fire Studios

      Cavy Fire Studios

Ooooh really? Huh, that's interesting. I confess I really enjoy the bleeding in my copper carb and mazerine blue, though. That might explain why Mayco's cobalt blue UG REALLY looked awful with that glaze...it makes for such beautiful bleeding effects for my shading, too. :) I think so long as my black is stable, I'm good. ♥

As long as you know what gonna happen, you can control outcome. Just don't trust it with green! :-)

  12. Gallery backed out on me. Stings quite a bit, but I guess that means I can sell those pieces on my own. I'm a pretty grumpy guinea right now, though.

A former teacher, my High School Art Teacher as a matter of fact, once told me, "Don't spend time worrying about things you can't control." There are a lot of things in life we can't control. Two of the biggest are weather and people. We just have to find an alternative, when either thing presents an obstacle.

Gorgeous as always! If you don't mind, I'd like to show my students pictures of your work, to show them what's possible with underglaze.

Also, I too like the black and white, with terracotta showing through. I figured it took less time, as you verified. That would be a great time saver for you.

  20. Darnit, the heat finally broke (gonna be 80! Yippee!), and I'm stuck cleaning house. It'd be a perfect trimming day, too. I think I'll try and underglaze later on, though. Pics? :)

We've been in the mid to upper 90's. Heat index here has been 105 to 110. Lots of stomach cramps.

Drink lots of water! I was in Santa Maria for the day a couple weeks ago. It was only about 101 but we were driving around shopping for clothes so we were constantly in and out of the car. I wasn't drinking enough water at all, and I ended up with heat exhaustion. I didn't feel that bad until the next day and then I was laid out. Not fun and I cannot recommend it. I do think it hit me worse than normal because I had just gotten over the flu. But man, drink water by the gallon.

    4. Marko

      Marko

Indeed, GiselleNo5. I drink about 8 to 16 glasses a day. It's after 10am right now and I'm soaking wet. It's a good sauna. Thanks for your advice.

  22. My clay creation was interrupted by a HORRIBLY abscessed premolar whose root canal just about killed me, but it's 74F today, my tooth's finally shut up, and it's terracotta throwin' time!! ^_^

I've had two root canals and they both had to be redone. The first one I was allergic to the silver points used in it. The second one was just a curvy tooth that was difficult.

  24. So, I went to the local dump to drop off some recyclables, and the dude running the place gave me a MOUNTAIN of fatty industrial BUBBLE WRAP for FREE! He's giving me EIGHT huge boxes of peanuts, too! My shipping's gonna be good for years! ^_^
