Good Ole Bisque Firing. A large shallow bowl/platter, a few cups and another bowl. Pretty much an empty kiln tbh. I haven't had time to make a lot until today. 20+ mugs drying in my greenhouse. I will handle them tomorrow evening.
All of it in crackle slip. I think I might have found a better way to do it. 2 of the pieces have this new method and I think the texture looks at lot better.
-
Hope you share more later about this new method and pics of the texture. Actually, I did not know what "crackle slip" is, but I found this snippet online, which includes a recipe...is yours real different? Just curious. http://www.potters.org/subject15984.htm

Lee.
I posted a picture yesterday of my slip on a greenware pot. It doesn't have the crackles yet because it doesn't crack until I have fired it. Here is a picture:
The slip decoration alone adds a lot of texture to the pot, all the tiny holes from my brushing technique, then on top of that it will form cracks and large "mud" cracks which resemble dried earth. If you look in my gallery you can see some recent work that shows that under stoneware pots.
I don't use a recipe. I use a clay with a high shrinkage rate with some chemicals added to it. A lot of trial and error.
-
I also just posted a picture on instagram of a platter/bowl that has been bisqued and shows the micro cracks starting.

Firing a new schedule. Needed to shorten mine as it is just too long. So I bisqued my pots before hand to avoid that extra slow ramp. I also changed the slow cool. It is still same total time, but slightly different in temps and ramps. Hopefully it works better or reasonably close because these 17-19 hours firings are just to hard to schedule in.

Cutting down trees from Irma. Mixing slip and some new glazes for highlights. Applying slips. Sunning my cups. Glazing tomorrow. Firing Monday! WOOO! Weee

Going to start working towards entering a cup show in my state. Called SIP. Based out of Savannah. Fun times.

Guess who is happy with his glaze work finally.

Thanks Marcia.

Congrats Joseph!

Just signed up for perspectives 2017 workshop with Naoki Izumi! So excited. These workshops are like an hour from my house and so affordable. I don't even know what it is about, but just to hear a master talk for two days will be beyond worth it.

Wow-what an opportunity--good for you!

Finished with my summer semester. Finally time to POT!
-
Hope everyone had a safe 4th of July. I know I grilled out a metric ton of hot wings. NOM NOM NOM.

Posted two cups of the new application process that I had posted about the other day. Since everyone said I left them hanging.

It is amazing how happy accidents lead to discovery and mental explosions of thought. Today I was screwing around loading my kiln and just was trying some things and after I applied some glaze to a cup, a million thoughts ran through my head and I think I figured out a crucial way to apply glazes on a form I want to use.

I was inspired today and can't wait to get my big raku built. Materials are on the way.
-
nice nice! can't wait to see the tiles.
-
It is amazing how easy it is to make good pots when your only working with 1 set of glazes. You can see the colors and things happening as you make it. Rather nice.

Nice. I plan on eventually adding more color to my work, but for now I am going to just explore these white/grey/brown tones.
-
Need to do that.

Today is my anniversary of pottery three years now. I posted an image on the gallery with more thoughts for anyone who wants to read it. Thanks to everyone here for all your wonderful help, thoughts, and support. Without you all I wouldn't be a potter.

Congrats on the 3 year mark-is that 3 years with clay from scratch 3 years ago?
-
Yes. I have never touched potter until three years ago. I was bored out of my mind and needed something to do. Got addicted. It has been awesome. Mostly because of everyone here.

Maybe finally found my main glaze for my work.. Firing it on a few larger pieces tonight.

maybe. still have a lot of work to do to find components that go with the glaze. A darker version to spray over, modifiers and fake ash glazes. but yea. the journey for a base might be near. which makes me happy tbh.

At the end of the road lies another. Unless it's a dead end xD

Or your driveway. = )

Experimenting with underglazes today, firing tonight. Kinda excited to get the burst of color I want on my pots.

Next time you are on the wheel, try dipping your finger into rio and make finger marks. See if it does any thing for you.
-
Beware, underglaze can be addictive. Use with caution!

I will try that Nerd. Roberta, we will see!

That moment when you realize you went through 75# of clay making small yunomi and kept zero...

And this is why it's called a process!
-
Aye! I enjoy the process more when I make things I love. I love yunomi. Thin beautiful cups. I figure I can apply to other cup shows in 2018 besides AKAR. There is one called SIP. I believe there are others as well. So I might be applying to a lot of those in 2018!

When you love your greenware but dislike your glazed ware. #confused

I have had a far more difficult time getting my glazes right than any other aspect of ceramics. I rarely have issues of any kind with the making process, if I'm going to have a problem it's always with the glazing. It can be really discouraging and the journey to success is different for everyone. It's such a disappointment when time after time you open the kiln and the results you see don't match the one you were going for.
-
Giselle. I can get my glazes pretty good now. I struggled with replicating results for a long time. But now my real problem is just picking a glaze and sticking to it. Although maybe it isn't a real problem. I do need to start using some glazes on actual work and listing it online for sale. I think I am just going to make yunomi and cups with handles for a while. They are my favorite to make anyways.
-
I tend to stick to about a half-dozen glazes, I don't think that's too many. How many do you have?

Thanks Denice. Roberta: good news!

I read it when I was starting out formulating my own glazes. It's a great book.

Developing a small bottle shape today for glaze test. Fun day.

Oh the joy of buying 15'' shelves, then getting home and they dont fit cause they are 15.5 inches and you have an L&L Kiln with element holders. DUN DUN DUN....

Whew... Done! Now I have blackish/grey kiln shelves. The corelite shelves held up a lot better than the cheap ones that I bought a while back. Those are like the ocean now. The corelite ones you can't even tell a grinder was on them. When I finished I patted my clothes off and it was a white dust storm. The sky was blocked and my dog yelped because she was scared of the sudden darkness.

SPRING WHERE YOU GO!? Just when I start enjoying spring and have my garage door open, a cold front comes in and I am back in the house hiding from my freezing studio and achy bones!
