My first attempt at making clay is finally wedged!!!!

Built a few pinch shot glasses, Waiting to fire/bisque....may join new group studio tommorow
-
The epk based clay is grey brown wet, but very white when dry. Less plastic than I expected, more meticulous pinch pots. But doable. Porcelain (ish) clay can be finicky. Wood fire next month
Which is what clay is designed for.
-
thats great iI shall look forward...T
-
forgot how finicky porcelin can be.........

Hi, haven't made in awhile buts yes still making, never used mark and daves .... Who makes that.... It's been about a year since throwing porcelain, I had it figured out second day....clay was too wet day one. And it took a day for "it" to click....... I'm throwing a modified Cushing/Galloway body.

Daves is a Laguna porcelain body-you can get it at Axners in FL.Its not as bright white as some.

not a satisfying firing. learned much. overall poor results.
-
Those are the best firings sometimes.
-
i agree joseph F there were a few treats... i post pics soon

Frustrated was unable to trim yesterday's practice. I need to remind myself porcelain is quirky. I you can't rush poreclain. It took substandard trimming on a few pieces before I realized. Then it took me way to long to switch gears and be productive.

There are a lot of metrosexual men out there who are as high maintenance as porcelain! : )
-
I switch all the time between porcelain and stoneware. It's easier on my back to use porcelain. But I love making stoneware mugs and bowls.

Any sort of clay in the Spring time can be quirky as you never know if the moisture level in the air is going to slow or speed drying. Spring is the thing, not the clay
-
same as last six days ago waiting for self-made clay to dry

It's possible I'll wedge my clay this weekend!

hopefully tuesday it will be wedge able......

-
Wedged about 70 pounds of clay today, if I'm to continue to make my own clay I think I'll need a pugmill, and a mixer

2 on sale right now. Local one is 1500' over priced. Second one is $500 but but 12 hours away!?
-
Almost worth it to drive twelve hours....
I will say though, the Walker is not de-airing.
-
I'll need a truck to move it. Not only is it large but I'm sure it's heavy

Spring is here! Nice examples Biglou. I think I will glaze some slabs. The sun finally came out today.
-
Of course, we dare not call this 'fun' or 'playing with fire'...but as Ben says, "it's addictive".
-
I see custom tiles for oven back splash soon

Trimming yes handles maybe they are all yunomi sized
-
Well, you can pull several long, consistently thick handles, and then cut them into small sections to fit on the smaller wares. I guess it all depends on whether not you are keeping them, in which case your desired vessel-type will dictate the need for a handle. Or, if they will just be recycled, in which case get some handle practice, while you can.
-
True I need practice pulling handles. Went to trim today cylinders almost bone dry. . I'll make more

Very nice. I was going to ask what kind of clay you were using, but I forgot, you have your own "Brand"...
-
Actually this one laguna 900
One of the few I buy, and performs superb in wood fire plain, and the first high fire shino I tested
. Yes all those were right it is hard work making clay.
-
I have no doubt it is. I'll leave the clay mixing up to someone else. Reclaiming is as close as I want to get...

New wood fired pieces in gallery, ANAGAMA treats! !!!!

You must have hands like leather to throw with the granite chunks. Nice work!
-
Wasn't to bad, surprisingly. The cleaning and sanding has my hands raw.
-
blown away! Just so nice.
-
well after crashing some mugs and reading about productivity, yesterday while studio sitting threw 7 mugs with handles (for the record ihave made kept less than a dozen handles, me no like) about 10 trinket dishes, and 2 medium plates. looking at others' shelves i was productive.... (but not at production potter level)
-
I don't know how long you've been at this but don't compare yourself to high production potters.
-
Whenever I do that I feel like a huge failure but the truth is I don't enjoy that kind of work anyway. I like working in batches of 2-6.
-
Hope that came across as encouraging, not rude. Was meant to be encouraging.

Looking good, how many colors are you going to use? I seen your wood firing albumn earlier today, nice work..
-
I like the wiggle wire bottoms. I'm usually all for a trimmed foot, but I do like that alternative. Looks like you will be busy glazin'.
-
Clear, oatmeal rust, shino with shino rio splash, falls creek shino, vc71 / crimson, VC 71/BOB, vc71/ fcs under randys red/ vc71/ local, ash glaze, local, ash glaze, / seaworld, / ice blue, / bob 2. I was shooting for 100 cups for a trunk show given just under a months notice. I thnk I'm shy of 80.. I realiize I'm no production potter. 20 cups max per, sitting was all I could muster. The wiggle wire while I like was subconcious decision not to trim.then I limited the number do cup...
