jrgpots
I just finished 10 new flutes. I am experimenting with glazes and clay bodies on the different flutes. I just tuned these 6. I would like your thoughts. The tape ( red and black) is used to tune them. Eventually each with have an ornamental figure to replace the tape. Can I upload a audio file of the flutes to the forum? Denice
They all look great but my preference would be the ones with a more satin or mat glaze. Denice
Dick White
When you say you are tuning them, are you tuning as to musical pitch or just getting the fipple to work properly?
jrgpots
Tuning them to a minor pentatonic scale, adjusting the pitch, and making them "concert tuned." I also have to adjust the fipple edge and stuff Like that. It'seems hard to anticipate hole placement and hole diameter, so they usually need a diamond bit adjustment. terrim8
I like the glaze on the 4rth one because it looks like soda fired flashing slip but I'm guessing that 5 will be more popular with a matte finish. It's the sound that matters most though, right?
jrgpots
The largest flute has a fundamental, or lowest note of c3, one octave below middle class. The smallest is tuned to G above middle class. Jed
LeeU
All the glazes are appealing to me, with 5 being the least because I don't particularly care for the introduction of the graphic effect of the deliberate stripes, although that is just personal taste, and maybe if the lines were much more precise and stood out more I would change my tune-pun intended. They look like fun--would love to hear the sound...maybe a little video?
oldlady
they are all beautiful. wish i knew where my niece has moved, she played the flute in high school and college marching bands.
Marko
Dude, sweet. I hope you can load a sound file. I would love to hear them. I love the colors. Does it matter if you tune them? Who knows what they should sound like. They sound like they sound. That's cool enough.

But most are played in flute circles. So the flutes have sound good together. Jed
preeta
Jed if I remember right you focus on Native American flutes right?!! they are all so beautiful. wonderful glaze work. they all look so close to nature. the only one i feel strongly about are the white hole rims on the first flute. compared to the background the while is too jarring for me. the area surrounding the holes looks like bisqued clay body there but you can apply some oxides to it can't you? of course this is all through pictures. in an orchestra or even small group setting your flutes will definitely stand out. rakukuku
I think all these flutes are beautiful. Love the color variations. Last year a man came into our gallery (an off the grid hippy type) with a clay flute he had made. He used a local natural clay known as blue goo which is low fire. He make the flutes and essentially fired them in a campfire. They clay was not refined and being low fired had low shrinkage. That enabled him to tune them while greenware. Gotta say they had the most beautiful sound. Really spot on. Maybe paper clay would help you with less shrinkage and better tuning. But others are right - these are not for classic orchestras but for one's own playing. Nice stuff.

cagl84
Hey Dad! I think these look great! 1,5, and 6 are my favorites. I love the high contrast of colors in 1 and 6. And I love the subtlety of the glaze in 5. I have a feeling I will like 3 more when I get to see it in person. I can tell there are stamping details that just aren't coming through in the photograph. I really like the glazing on 2- but like preeta said about image 1, I think the raw clay of the holes needs to be addressed more. #5 the hole areas kind of absorbed some of the glaze and created a patina of sorts, a gradual change from glaze to raw clay. Which is so lovely and I wish 2 had that as well. The only one that I do not like is #4. It seems a bit fleshy. It is a fantastic glaze and I do like the effect. But maybe not on this form- I'm struggling to not see it as phallic. And I hate to say it... as I hate that my work gets compared to anatomy a lot. Now I'm feeling a bit embarrassed so I'm going to go and hide under a rock for a bit. Love ya!
