Denice got a reaction from Benzine in Finally got power back on this morning, after 8-1/2 days without due to the "derecho"
Did you have any damage to your cars or home?   We went through something like that many years ago,  we woke up to a loud roaring sound.   Our house was on a corner,  when we looked out of the window  we saw tree limbs spinning around in the middle of the corner.  We decided to go to our tornado shelter but couldn't get our doors open the air pressure was to strong.  There was really no safe place to hide so we went back to bed.  When we got up in the morning our house was covered with limbs.   My husband managed to get enough limbs out of the way so we could go to work.   When we got home that evening all of the tree limbs were gone,  the yard was spotless.   We still had most of a huge tree on our roof but someone came by later and manage to remove it,  he wanted the wood.   The weather man said there was no tornado just really strong straight line winds.    There was damage for many miles and many people who had damage thought it was a tornado.  We were also without power for a couple of weeks.  I am glad you are alright,  when we went back to bed we thought we might die that night.   Denice

I also struggle to get the right look and fit to the hand when I make handles.   Once they are glazed and fired I realize that they are just what I was trying to do.  Denice

Do you mean C05?    C5 would be nearly impossible to do a proper glazing on the pot.

Your more big time into coffee than my son, he is a trained chef and picked up the trick of using a popcorn popper from another chef.  Did you get your settling system built for your sink?  If you have anymore studio questions just ask before you spend a lot of money.   I have had three different studios in the past 45 years,  I am not even counting the first area I had was a chair,  fold down desk top and small kiln.   I started out with hand building and glass melting.  I  had done hand building in high school and eventually got my degree in a ceramics fine arts degree.   Denice

I bought clay a couple of days ago,  I thought I was out.  I looked at the companies web site and it wasn't listed,  freaked me out.   I had tried several clays  for throwing and this one worked the best for me. Turned out they had a new website and the web designer didn't include it.    When I was making space for the clay I found two bags that were covered with mold,  I bought it around Christmas.  Never had clay mold this fast,  using it first.   Denice

Sorry to hear about your mishap,  I almost fell down a hill backwards my foot got caught on some pavers except for one toe.  It is bent backwards.  I happened to have a foot doctors appointment that week and he said nothing was broken.  This toe still sticks up higher than the rest of my toes.  When these weird mishaps happen to me I prop my leg up on a clay bucket,  pillow and ice in my studio and do some coiling or pinch pots.     Denice

Denice got a reaction from Benzine in So excited I can barely contain myself. Kiln is ordered!!!! Space is ready for it!!!!
Before you know it you will be a kiln collector.   I started out with a small kiln,  then bought a large Skutt for sculptures.  When I graduated from college my professor suggested I buy a test kiln.   I just recently had to toss my small kiln it was forty five years old.  I found a small kiln at a estate sale that had only been fired once for cheap.  I am back to my three kiln collection.    I  recently fired the small kiln an it still had that new kiln smell, it made me so happy.  Enjoy your first firing.     Denice

Denice got a reaction from Roberta12 in Mark I was wondering if you had ever used the Wonderbat system. I tried it out today,
I have my old kiln in the trash and my new kiln installed.  We discovered that it had been fired once and the cone had some how melted back into the cone cylinder of the kiln sitter making it unusable.  We replaced it but had to move the kilns around the new one had a short cord.  While we had the kilns out we put up another piece of cement board on the wall in the kiln room.  Once we started to move things around we discovered that our corrugated  aluminum for the Skutt envirovent need to be replaced.   Our quick and easy job turned into a marathon.  I  have a bisque firing going this morning and I am going to try wetting the wonderbats and see if that helps.    Denice

The drought is in Kansas and probably Oklahoma,  yesterday I watched a rain storm get closer and closer and by the time it got to us it was just spit.  Unless we get some rain soon we are going to have a bad wheat crop.  I am going to water trees and shrubs tomorrow just to keep them alive.    Denice

My husband, son and I were vacationing in Orlando and went to see a Space shuttle launch.  They had been having trouble with the shuttle so launches weren't happening very often.  We took a chance and got up at 3 in the morning and drove to a look out point.   They almost cancel it three times and then decided to launch,  the roar of the engine was impressive but the shaking of the ground so far away was amazing.  We could have been a launch guest,  my husband's second cousin was head of the space shuttle program.  We decided to watch from a distance and not bother him even though other family members had.  My in-laws were special guest to see the Hubble telescope launched into space.    Denice

Denice got a reaction from Benzine in So I'm buying a kiln. Probably a Skutt from Georgie's. How do you like them bananas?
Make sure you get a kiln that is in sections, they are easier to rewire.  I have had a big Skutt for thirty years,  the only thing that bothers me is that I have had to replace the lid three times.  L &L kilns lists  scratch and dent  kilns on there web site,  the government auctions is also a good place to look.  I missed out on a good one near me, they were clearing out a ceramics studio at a air force base.  They sold 3 computer control Skutt for a couple of hundred a piece.   Good Luck.   Denice

Denice got a reaction from yappystudent in Worried my kiln for hire is going away. That would leave me to buy a kiln, -never had
Before you even start looking at kilns you have some research to do.  Wiring and location to start with and if you have a location will you be living at that location that it would be worth the cost of setting up a kiln.  Sometimes it is cheaper to take a pottery class where you can have work fired when your in limbo.  I  have bought two used kiln and one new test kiln in the last 45 years.   My paragon has finally gotten too old to rebuild and I just rewired my Skutt.   I use a dual digital Skutt thermocouple set up if I want to do any down firing.   Like I said a lot of research to do.   Denice
