Ellison
Hi all. I'm new here and I'm sure this has been answered numerous times, but I couldn't find exactly it, so...I just purchased a 90s CXC that must have been sitting for a bit. The wheel head didn't spin, but when I checked it out I could hear the motor spinning so that was a good sign. When I was finally able to open it up there was some mouse house remains as well as some snakeskin in the belt housing. There's a story there somewhere...anyway, the belt had come off, so after I cleaned it up I just put the belt on and the machine runs smooth. However, when I center or put some pressure on the wheel head it slows down, so I'm wondering if I should just order a new belt and see if that clears that up (though the belt looked fine visually), or if I should do something else. Basically, I'm wondering if I have a belt problem, a motor problem, or some other issue. Otherwise, the machine runs nicely...no wobble, decent pedal speed, etc. Thanks everyone! Bill Kielb
It is belt driven so since the belt looks to be in good shape you likely have to adjust the tension on the belt so it does not slip under normal use. Locate the tensioner and tighten it slowly trying it out. Don’t over tighten it there should be some deflection in the middle of the belt when you push on it with mild pressure. Also check that the old belt and pulleys are clean, no oils for sure. From your description, very likely just needs proper tensioning. Mark C.
Yes its a belt slippage issue and just needs tighting as Bill points out here is how https://www.amaco.com/equipment_how_tos
neilestrick
It could also be that the belt has dried out and isn't gripping very well any more. If tightening it doesn't work then a new belt may be needed. Bill Kielb
Hulk
Aye, and the more it slips, the slicker it gets! Bill Kielb
Ellison
I cranked it down quite a bit and it's definitely better, but I think perhaps a new belt is in order anyway. Thanks for all the help! Hulk and Bill Kielb
Bill Kielb
Usually a worn belt will appear dried and cracked, but enough slipping and it tends to get polished. In the old days we used belt dressing to rejuvenate. Having done that enough - new belt is a wise choice! Still needs reasonable tension though.
