cambriapottery
I need some Kentucky Old Mine #4 in my glaze batch. I don't have any in stock but I have Jackson ball clay. They seem almost identical except for a little more Titanium dioxide. Could I use it?

Callie Beller Diesel
There’s some glaze recipes that can be sensitive to material substitution, but they tend to be the exception rather than the rule. When I compare the 2 materials in Glazy, the silica: alumina content are close enough I wouldn’t be too worried about it. From a chemistry standpoint that’s most of what clay supplies to a glaze.. There’s a little difference in the magnesium content as well, but without knowing what else is in the recipe it’s hard to pinpoint whether that’d be significant or not. If it’s important to get the glaze just so, post the recipe here and one of us can run it through software to fine tune it. cambriapottery
Thank you both for your response. I feel it is probably fine to use the Jackson and doubt there will be any signifant difference.
Mark C.
Most ball clays are really close and can be subsituted-I'll 3rd the yes
JohnnyK
...and, obviously, after you make the substitution, test, test, test! Pyewackette
