ghosthunter79
We just opened a little PYOP studio and have had some issues. We have kids that come in and like to use underglaze on bisque. Many of them put on underglaze very thick; drips and pools of underglaze. After clear dipping and firing to 06, they chip and flake off where the drips and thick layers are. I know some companies make dimensional glaze/underglaze but not sure how the overglaze works on those. We are using mayco underglaze and clear one dipping glaze. We instruct to avoid drips and use 2-3 thin layers but the kids get excited and are sloppy sometimes. Anyway to avoid this issue? Is there a better overglaze that would correct the issue? Thanks! Babs
If bisque was dampened that would affect the underglaze application. what age of child? A few pieces of unsuccesful glazed ware to show negative results ,a few fie positive results. There is a medium to make it more "brushable" , don't know if Mayco already has it in it. Vigilant teachers? Whip it away before they wreck it....
neilestrick
Most underglazes come too thick in the bottle and should be watered down. Better to apply 2 thin layers than one thick layer.
Callie Beller Diesel
You can tailor your instruction to the customers a bit. If you know the kids aren’t listening when you say 2 thin layers, tell them to only do one. Adults are usually more receptive to more accurate info. Either that, or thin the materials for them rather than just handing them the bottles.
oldlady
agree, thin the underglaze and do not let them use water for anything.
